Supplements you take and recommend?

I keep seeing ads for magnesium supplements. It's so difficult to tell these days which supplements are truly beneficial and which are just stupid crap. I don't sleep well, and I can't take ambien or copious amounts of pot (silly). I would like something that might help me sleep better and, apparently, magnesium must be frequently used.

Any supplements you swear by in general? Right now, I only take a daily multivitamin. I don't know if it helps, but I suppose it isn't hurting me. I'm 44 - I forget if this is eldergay or not, but either way, I'm not 24!

I only take a Vitamin-D supplement. I do sometimes chew those Emergen-C pills if I feel a cold coming on

by Anonymousreply 1October 28, 2024 12:24 PM

I've never found any supplements that seem to have any effect at all, so I don't bother. I just try to eat a balanced diet. If I saw evidence that they actually work, I'd be happy to take them.

DLers have mocked and chastised me in the past for suggesting the following but I don't care!

Do the "sway test" (applied kinesiology) to determine if your body needs the vitamin/supplement.

Hold bottle or individual capsule in left hand over heart. If your body sways backwards, you don't need it or are allergic to it, if your body sways forward your body needs it, isn't allergic to it. Rarely a neutral, no sway reaction.

Best done barefoot on floor not rug or carpet but does work either way.

Works for food too.

For sleep I strongly suggest the, curio good night tabs, it’s a time released tab of sleep, aids thc plus cbn. Also the Blueberry snooze bites from Select. It’s similar to the Curio.

I have found these to work as far as sleep. And they don’t make you feel like you have smoked a lot of pot. But you also have to get off the phone, iPad etc before bed time.

Most supplements are a waste of your money

by Anonymousreply 4October 28, 2024 12:46 PM

R4 I should have added that these can only be legally purchased in a state that has made the selling of thc legal.

by Anonymousreply 5October 28, 2024 12:48 PM

Exercise helps me rest better.

by Anonymousreply 6October 28, 2024 12:48 PM

Magnesium is in a calcium cluster: Magnesium/K2/D3/ALA

My foot neuropathy has greatly improved, as well as my bone on bone osteoarthritis.

Plus I take 10mg of Melatonin with my pm pills, not for sleep but its antioxidant value. And my sleep is deeper and better.

Just saying what works for me.

Vitamin C is a necessity - especially in the winter with flu season and if you're in public most of the day.

Vitamn D and Magnesium are both 'a must' for you as well.

by Anonymousreply 8October 28, 2024 1:03 PM

All vitamins are a necessity, that's what makes them vitamins. If you don't take a recommended daily amount of them each day – whether in supplement form or through regular diet – it will show in your health eventually.

But yes, if you want to sleep better, magnesium is great. Just don't take the carbonate form because it doesn't absorb that well. Citrate or chloride forms are best, with chloride being the cheapest when bought in bulk. If you have money to burn, you can buy the threonate form, which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. From personal experience, I can say it did nothing special for me, so I wouldn't bother. Also, don't take more than 2g of magnesium at once, it'll give you the runs, which is both unpleasant AND the magnesium will just get flushed out of your body.

CalmAid. It’s lavender. You’ll sleep.

Otherwise a multivitamin, most of which have more of each vitamin or mineral than you need - you just pee out the rest.

My doctor prescribed me phosphorus and I grudgingly had to admit it made me feel much better.

by Anonymousreply 11October 28, 2024 1:37 PM

I know medical professionals who take vitamins so they definitely work!

by Anonymousreply 12October 28, 2024 2:03 PM

I take a daily multivitamin, CoQ10, fish oil and fiber powder. Most supplements are ineffective scams or they have side effects.

by Anonymousreply 13October 28, 2024 4:45 PM

Vitamin D in winter. Essential for Canadians.

by Anonymousreply 14October 28, 2024 4:55 PM

Really R8? Why and please provide evidence. Yes some older adults in northern climates may need some vitamin D, but supplements serve no purpose without an unusual need eg, a young woman on a vegan diet may need supplemental iron and B12.

by Anonymousreply 15October 28, 2024 5:15 PM

I take B12 because I have dizzy spells. I don't know if it's helping or not, since I still have occasional dizziness. I tried ashwaganda for anxiety, but it didn't really make a difference.

by Anonymousreply 16October 28, 2024 5:18 PM

No other DLer takes red yeast rice for cholesterol?

by Anonymousreply 17October 28, 2024 5:20 PM

R16, have you always had dizzy spells?

by Anonymousreply 18October 28, 2024 5:33 PM

Creatine. The only supplement that has been proven in study after study to provide a benefit to athletic performance, apparently helps improve congnitive function as well.

by Anonymousreply 19October 28, 2024 5:37 PM

No, r18. My blood work showed some borderline anemia, but my doctor didn't seem concerned.

by Anonymousreply 20October 28, 2024 5:40 PM

Balance of Nature! But only take it after you pray.

by Anonymousreply 21October 28, 2024 5:48 PM

Magnesium glycinate in the evening, great for sleep. Most people are magnesium deficient Creatine daily, excellent for muscle growth and cognition Vitamin D3/K2 - you should take a combo pill for the most benefit Saw palmetto and biotin- good for hair growth and strength

by Anonymousreply 22October 28, 2024 5:50 PM

my poos were kinda soft and dark. watched an in bed with joan episode last week. the guest had that complaint. joan bursts out that they were anemic. doubled the daily multi and worked by the next day.

veggie here who does not eat veggies here.

i did try iron years and years ago and it didn't work. like 30 years ago. works now.

by Anonymousreply 23October 28, 2024 5:58 PM

I take huo luo xiao ling, a traditional Chinese medicine supplement, for inflammation and neuropathy. It has helped.

by Anonymousreply 24October 28, 2024 6:01 PM

Magnesium threonate is the only form of magnesium that is absorbed into your brain, you also won't crap your pants. The D3 K2 is a must as well.

by Anonymousreply 25October 28, 2024 6:05 PM

Doc has my husband and I on daily Vitamin D. He's 42 and I'm almost 58. I read that if you wear SPF everyday in the summer you can block the Vitamin D. That could totally be bullshit though. I read it online not from my doctor.

by Anonymousreply 26October 28, 2024 6:09 PM

Nitric Oxide - improves blood flow and circulation. Gives me boners like a 16-year-old lol.

by Anonymousreply 27October 28, 2024 6:14 PM

Oh dear

Doc has my husband and I ….

by Anonymousreply 28October 28, 2024 6:16 PM

I take Vitamin D which is a necessity for your immune system…I also take Magnesium which helps digestion and relaxes muscles..also can help with sleep.

by Anonymousreply 29October 28, 2024 6:26 PM

Senna (softgel form) to keep me regular.

by Anonymousreply 30October 28, 2024 8:39 PM

what about vitamins for your bones? what do you guys take? calcium?

by Anonymousreply 31October 28, 2024 9:11 PM

My doctor told me to stop taking calcium and I was happy to do that. She said to just get calcium through food. I eat a fair amount of cheese, though.

by Anonymousreply 32October 28, 2024 9:13 PM

No, you should not take calcium, you should rearrange the calcium in your body.

Magnesium, D3 K2 are what you need.

by Anonymousreply 33October 28, 2024 9:13 PM

R15 What would a PhD have to do with Medicine?

by Anonymousreply 34October 29, 2024 12:27 AM

I’ve been taking green tea capsules for years Have no clue if they do anything

by Anonymousreply 35October 29, 2024 2:11 AM

If you are taking Green Tea caps and your liver enzymes are normal, then you are receiving a good dose for health management.

It's like having a tuned immune system. You never know it's working.

by Anonymousreply 36October 29, 2024 2:22 AM

Be careful about taking zinc. I was taking zinc supplements, and it caused my hair to start falling out. Zinc is good for you, but don't go crazy with it.
