Is New Jersey really as corrupt as everyone says?
Two things that have stood out to me in news articles about New Jersey. One, that prosecuting public officials for corruption is practically a weekly occurrence. And two, that the municipal courts basically treat NJ residents like ATMs and charge them with all kinds of petty nonsense to shake them down for fines. Is any of this true?
I never lived there but I’ve been there a handful of times and most of the people seemed pretty nice and normal. The only exception was that I tended to encounter more boorish, obnoxious people closer to Newark.

The four most THEATRICALLY corrupt states are a circlejerk of Florida, Illinois, Louisiana and New Jersey.
The actual most corrupt state is of course Texas.

New Jersey has always been at the top of that corruption list. Not the people so much as the politicians. You would be surprised how so many MAGAts live there. While it's known as a blue state, thats only in concentrated areas in the big city. 90% of that state shows red if you break it down by county.

Not true

Still a lot of red in that state.

^^^Those New Jersey maps are the equivalent of the U.S. presidential election maps by state or county that are a sea of red with a few blue dots on the periphery and in the larger metro areas, but that's where most of the population lives, not some rural county covering a huge area with a few thousand residents.

Ask Bob Menendez- he might know.

Look, bottom line if you drive or live in those red areas, they may be more suburban or rural, but it's still MAGA country. Millions live in those parts. My partners family and all their friends, neighbors are MAGA freaks from Bridgewater NJ. And it's not that rural, things are spread out but mostly little towns connected to each other by a main highway, they have shopping malls and town centers, not just all farm land.

NJ is the state with the highest median household income. In the top 10 for college graduates. Out of the 50 states it ranks 45th for violent crime.
And this fact is pretty amazing:

Yes, I have met a few of those people in NJ, and yes they were engineers but still MAGA. And I don't know what's in the water there, but they all seem to be head deep into conspiracy theories and psychics even with those college degrees. You think every scientist or engineer is a Democrat? How cute.

Bridgewater NJ safe, clean, upscale, home to numerous pharmaceutical companies including Sanofi. There are 17 Fortune 500 companies in Bridgewater.
Oh those MAGAts!

What's your point, r12? It's impossible for a place to be a right-wing shit hole AND have jobs?

Whenever some think tank or organization puts together an index to measure state-level corruption, Louisiana is always at or very close to the top.

It's also way out in the country, and rich country folks in any state who are far from big cities almost always lean very Republican. I never said they were stupid hicks or poor. In fact, my partners brother in-law is worth about 20 million from what I can gather of his business. I dont want to post personal info on the DL but lest just say he's a big fish in that small town enough so that he's met both Trump and Clinton through his business. And he knew Kurshners father as well. When I pointed out he has been in prison, his response was "he was framed". 🙄
I actually got in an argument with him the first night we were there for thanksgiving. He was saying things like Bill Clinton was so old he was about to die but at the same time he somehow has mistresses in every city. 100% Fox New blaring from their bedroom. 24/7. Making jokes about not drinking the water in CA.
Anyways, my point is everyone who stopped by be it a relative, neighbor, some of his employees, MAGA, MAGA, MAGA And yes, that includes two men who both worked as professional white collar engineers at different companies there. I only met one other relative who stopped by who said she was a Democrat.

I’m on the west coast, and years ago I owned a franchise business where the franchisor did the billing for us. There was a phenomenally successful franchisee in NJ. A dad and two sons, and they looked like they belonged in a Godfather movie. One time I received all of their billings by accident. They were all marked up about 5 times more than our costs, and they were all garbage companies. Definitely money laundering and corruption going on there.

New Jersey is a fantastic place to grow up. You learn early that it is who you know who gets things done. I grew up in a very affluent area of southern Somerset County. People would wish they crew up in a place like that.
My sister married a mafia guy.

Everyone in Somerset County is directly or tangentially affiliated with the mafia.

It’s the Italians that cause the corruption. They brought it with them as immigrants and it permeated the state like syphilis. If you rounded up all the New Jersey Italians and exterminated them the corruption would probably drop to zero, because even though non-Italians engage in corruption too, it’s the Italians who perpetuate it.
