Imposter and con artist David Hampton
From a long line of such characters in real life, and literature.
I wonder why he lost his early 90s lawsuit against Playwright John Guare. It seems to me that Guare did take Hampton's life story and made a lot of money off of it.
Hampton had AIDS and died of it in 2003. That was years after tritherapy so David must have been quite a mess. Probably could have used some cash in the 90s, even if he was a despicable character.

Guare wasn't about to give his stalker compensation for writing about the criminal escapades of a public figure.

That’s basically Will Smith’s character in 6 degrees.

Another penetrating glimpse into the obvious.

Do you guys think the male celebs who gave him money were closeted/bisexual?

Well wiki says Guare's requested restraining order on Hampton was denied. So how much of a threat was Hampton?
Also, you have a point that Guare wouldn't want to pay off Hampton. But it wasn't for Guare to decide! It was a point for justice to decide. I guess I shouldn't be so lazy and search for the judgement as to why Hampton's lawsuit was dismissed.

Seems like it could make a good series and include some fresh angles on Hampton.

He died in 2003. Isn’t it odd to die of AIDS-related condition when the anti retro virals came out in 1996

R7 that's a point I made. He must have been quite a mess and unable to take care of himself or pay a doctor and meds to take care of him. This OBIT has almost no details of his life in the 90s other than he kept up petty scams.

The NYT Obit has some more anecdotes from later in his life, but not much detail on how he "died alone"

I thought Laura Webber killed him but her mother Leslie went on trial for murdering him to protect her daughter.

This would make a great storyline for a Ryan Murphy series on Netflix.

R8: the early antiretrovirals had lots of side effects and people started out taking lots of pills/day. And some people who tolerated all of that still died, esp. if they already were showing signs of premature aging like cardio vascular disease.

Surely there are homeless dying of AIDS somewhere in the US?

If he took AZT, the new meds wouldn't work for him.

Because Hampton had become a public figure due to his own actions which brought him widespread notoriety.

I see why Will Smith got the part.

I lost a friend that took AZT that basically ruined his organs and the new cocktail wouldn’t work.

Conning rich liberals is fun. Why not get a free night in their Fifth Avenue apartments, drink their wine, enjoy the fine furniture, art, conversation, get laid too?

I remember an interview with him where he tossed his drink in the interviewer's face (I wish I could find it so I could post it). He was deeply rooted in his fraud.

That's nonsense. Nearly everyone with late stage AIDS at that time was on AZT. The anti-retrovirals showed up and nearly everyone got better, leading to the closing of hospital AIDS wards all over the country.

^It was eight years between AZT in 1987 and the first drug cocktails in 1995. The majority of people who began taking it in 1987, weren't alive in 1996.
I contracted HIV in April 1991, and the minute my T-cells dropped below 500, my doctor put me on AZT. After about two weeks, I stopped taking it. By the time I moved out to Los Angeles in Fall 1994, my viral load was over 250,000 and my T-cells were at 125. Fortunately, I wasn't sick, and I started at Cedars Siani in Feb 1996, where my doctor told me by NOT taking AZT, I would be more receptive to the new cocktail. I've been through four different combinations and have been undetectable for nearly 30 years.
