Hayley Mills
I was flicking through her memoire the other day and was surprised to read she turned down a number of choice parts in her early career.
Exodus (she would have played the tragic blonde girl Karen who was the girlfriend of Sal Mineo)
The Children’s Hour (she would have played vindictive Mary alongside Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine)
And
Lolita (playing the titular role)
doctor Doolittle (samantha eggar played the role)
She still had a fine career, but any one of these roles might have given her some extra gravitas. I’d love to see a movie with her and Audrey Hepburn co-starring, they were both similar in terms of their acting styles, although both was a little too saccharine perhaps.

I suppose The Children's Hour might have given her an edge the Disney movies didn't but I'm much happier we got The Parent Trap

I’d just have loved to have seen her alongside the two stars MacLaine and Hepburn in that one.

She didn't do Children's Hour but she did play a fucked up kid in The Chalk Garden which was a good role for her.

I was surprised to see her pop up in “Trap” with Josh Hartnett. She’s perfectly cast in it.

On the set of Parent Trap 2, we discussed how, like Marilyn Monroe, she desired to play Grushenka in The Brothers Karamazov.

I just finished her audiobook. Hayley reads it. Such a soothing voice and very interesting.

R4, did she help another kid do a parent trap with Josh Hartnett and his ex-wife in that film?

Sue Lyon was perfect in Lolita. Kubrick knew what he was doing and that was not hiring someone like Hayley Mills for the part.
