Luke Evans “Can’t Think Of Another Gay Actor Playing His Kind Of Roles”
Luke Evans is surprised there aren’t more gay actors performing the kind of macho screen roles that have made him a Hollywood star.
In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, the Welsh actor shared that he first realised he had broken through one of Hollywood’s glass ceilings when he was cast in macho roles including The Hobbit and the Fast & Furious franchise, and gay activist and actor Ian McKellen (Gandalf in Lord of the Rings) told him, “Ooh look at you, you’re going to be a big butch star!”
Evans said of McKellen’s comment: “He was aware of the ground I was treading. I just hoped it would have moved further than it has.”
Evans is currently filming a TV series called Criminal, in which he plays a tough, straight man, and he was asked if he could think of any other out gay actors who would be cast in the same part? He said not, and added in the same interview:
He added: “I thought over a decade ago, you won’t be on your own for long. Of course there are lots of gay actors, but playing the roles I’m playing I don’t think there’s many.”

To be fair to Luke, he didn’t just come out of nowhere with that. The interviewer led him down that path of inquiry. And he wasn’t bragging, he was actually disenchanted that more masculine gay actors haven’t come out of the closet to join him by now.

R3 😆. Coleman Domingo is a masculine gay actor about his age. He could play his roles in colorblind casting.

He’s very stupid. He could be talking people up. It’s stupid of him go down the “masculine” path anyway - is he implying that all other out gay actors are sissies?
His publicist pitched the interview. He should’ve been prepared to speak with respect. Pretending that “masculinity” is an exclusive association with straight actors - and he’s the only exception is stupid and narrow minded.
This interview is like, “Tell me you’re old, self-centred and out of touch without….”

Jonathan Groff played the straight lead in Mindhunter.
Pablo Picasso played the straight lead in The Last Of Us (yes he is out despite not being out)

Jonathan Groff cannot act. I like him as a person but he can’t act.

I Picasso as brilliant an actor as he is a painter? And I'm shocked that Picasso is a cock sucker.

Whether you like him or not, he's an openly gay actor cast as a straight man in a prestigious and well reviewed drama series.

Well he’s hardly going to tell people who they can cast in case his price is too high. Is he? He’s clearly being strategic here.

R10 Agreed cause I like that show and I want him to win in his career. I was disappointed it didn’t get a 3rd season.

The quote is from a Guardian interview from this weekend.
This sounds creepy as fuck
[quote]At 16, Evans left school and town for Cardiff and a new life. He decided that was the only way he could hold on to his parents while being true to himself. He got an admin job in a finance company and began a relationship with his line manager, Tom, 20 years his senior. An anonymous letter was sent to personnel exposing the relationship, and Tom was fired. The couple could see no future for themselves.
[quote]Evans describes his life as a series of “sliding doors” moments, and this is when the biggest door opened. Tom was friendly with an exceptionally wealthy couple who invited them to stay. That night, they discussed Tom’s dismissal from work. Evans, still a shy teenager, revealed that he liked to sing. After some cajoling, he agreed to perform Danny Boy for them. The next morning, the friends said they had a proposition – they would hire Tom to manage their trust fund and support Evans financially to put him through music and drama school.
[quote]This is where Evans’ story starts to verge on the implausible. At the age of 16, he was living in London with Tom in a luxury block of flats whose residents included Cilla Black.
Firstly yes, it is completely inappropriate for a 36 year old to be fucking a 16 year old who works for him and his sacking was justified.
And the "wealthy couple" who had no problem with their 36 year old friend fucking a 16 year old and threw money at the pair of them.... Tom was Luke's pimp and they paid for services rendered, didn't they?

R15 It’s only inappropriate in America. Maybe it’s wrong. But who can say for certain. And a Frau definitely wrote that anonymous letter 😆.

Many (most?) incredible opportunities in people's lives probably boil down to being hot at the right time. Humans aren't that complex.

R15, it smells like BS. And yes, very innapropriate for a 36 year old to "date" a 16 year old.

Any sane adult would recoil in horror if a 36 year old friend introduced his 16 year old partner (male or female) who was estranged from their family.
16 - not old enough to vote, not old enough to drink, not old enough to drive, not treated in law as an adult.

And Luke was born in 1979 which made him 16 years old in 1995-1996, when the age of consent for gay men in the UK was 18.
So Tom was not just just being unprofessional, he was committing a crime.

R20 yeah you’re right. I just always think in past generations teenagers being more mature. You are right tho essentially. I’m 36 now. 😳 passage of time.

Matt Bomer was excellent in Fellow Travellers playing a masculine, gay Don Draper character. He was terrific. An out gay actor in a gay role.

Didn't he establish himself in those macho action roles like in [italic]Immortals[/italic], the Hobbit movies, and [italic]Fast and Furious 6[/italic] while he was still (back) in the closet pretending to be a straight actor? I only recall hearing that he was being openly gay again around the time of [italic]Beauty and the Beast[/italic], after some womens' magazine interviews and that supposed engagement to the PR chick implied the opposite.
I'm fairly sure Murray Bartlett could play any role Evans has capably except maybe Gaston (no idea whether he can sing or not), but he's concentrated more on prestige drama than action. Luke Macfarlane also has a similar wheelhouse, though he's not been as successful yet—possibly because he's been [bold]consistently[/bold] open about his sexuality since the 2000s.

Why hire a masculine gay like Luke, when you can hire a very masculine straight heterosexual like Bambi Glitzine???
Hire Straight actors for straight roles!!!

An oddly pompous and self serving statement, especially since Evans would be well aware of the small group of gay British actors whom he competes for roles with, are more successful than him and who vaguely resemble him.
