How does it feel to be a part of the Trumpiest generation? Somehow even Trumpier than the Trumpy Boomers!
Leave it to Gen X to whine and complain about Boomers all the while propping them up for 40 years or more

I recall the field of Democratic presidential candidates was quite large in 2020 and President Biden was way at the bottom of the ticket until the primary in South Carolina.
Black Democratic party members who stood in line for hours, voted for President Biden overwhelmingly and more voted for Vice President Harris.
Why do you think the blacks chose an old white dude over a middle aged black woman as the nominee?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 27, 2024 7:02 PM |
and more voted for President BIDEN than Vice- President Harris.

by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 27, 2024 7:06 PM |
I've believed that Gen X was Trumpier than Boomers for years. I'm a Boomer and think we've gotten a bad rap. This year will be telling as most Boomers are now over 65. The polls for the most part will give us a better picture of how Boomers vote because "Over 65" is generally a level set.

r5 It's especially galling considering how cool Gen X thinks they still are, nevermind that they're generation Capitol Insurrection
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 27, 2024 7:14 PM |
Gen X, age 52, and not a Trumper (as many aren't) I'm not sure we could have foreshadowed this. But, is it that surprising? From being latch key kids to being the last generation to live their youth/early adulthood entirely or substantively without the internet, social media, smart phones, and all that entails - and experiencing that huge shift. Plus, Gen X is simply older now and at least some of it has to be nothing more than a subset getting more conservative as they get older - which happens in every generation. I'm sure plenty has been written about it.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 27, 2024 7:21 PM |
r8 your generation has always tilted conservatard. You were the young Reagan Alex Keaton Republicans and broke for Bush 2000 over Gore when you all were still young.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 27, 2024 7:25 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 27, 2024 7:28 PM |
Hilarious, too, because unless the troll chokes on their own bile (likely, given the level of anger?) one day they too will be old.
And still as irrelevant as they are now.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 27, 2024 7:32 PM |
R12 are you denying that your generation is so MAGA?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 27, 2024 7:33 PM |
That's a good point, R9. There was definitely that crowd, but I didn't know how big it was. I'd assume every generation has their young conservative subset. So, if Gen X's was substantially bigger, why? Was it simply who our parents were - a lot of Reaganite Boomer parents among Gen X - which can cause kids to follow or rebel against that when they're young. I'm sure it's multiple factors.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 27, 2024 7:34 PM |
R9, you understand that Alex Keaton was a TV character, right? Almost none of my GenX peers was conservative. We fucking HATED Reagan and Bush (both Bushes).
We need hard statistics here. I'm going to find some. Let's both find some and meet back here later today.
I just put in my vote for Harris about an hour ago, BTW.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 27, 2024 7:40 PM |
You're being a smart ass. You can't answer the question. Why did the blacks vote for an old white guy over Kamala Harris in 2020?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 27, 2024 7:42 PM |
Linked stats do not point to a big Rethug affiliation among GenXers. Certainly more than I would like to see, but not a huge swath.

I’m Gen X and don’t whine and complain about boomers. I also acknowledge that my Gen is the trumpiest unfortunately. It’s because many of us were young during the Reagan years and you weren’t cool unless you were a reaganite.
But guess what? The democrats’ candidates are, by some definitions, Gen X (Strauss and Howe, the people who actually came up with the American generational theory, count 1961-81 as Gen x. It’s not what the U.S. govt uses, but S&H’s years actually make more sense).

we had a discussion about this not he DL a while ago. the kids in the 80s who listened to hair metal bands all became trumpers. the Rest of us who listened to david byrne, tears for fears, even cyndi lauper, all chose the left. I had friends in college who disrupted the meeting of regents at their college by lying on the table and making out (this when gays kissing was entirely forbidden), I had friends who protested Herbert Walker Bush and his war (also interestingly Anthony fauci) and I worked for habitat for humanity while in college and met Jimmy carter, a lovely man.
and yes, the division still exists. the hair metalheads from my 80s high school years are super conservative suburbanites. But no one I know personally is that sort.

As an Xer, one thing I've always appreciated about my generation is our lack of preoccupation with 'our generation' and the whole notion of some imaginary categorization and labelling of a group of millions of people who have nothing more in common than being born within the same twenty year period. Ultimately, it means nothing and serves no purpose other than for those people who lack a strong sense of identity on their own behalf.

This is Teacake’s latest persona. But Gen X Hater has no motivation, complexity, wit or humor like any decent fictional character has. It’s just nonstop insults against a demographic that doesn’t even have that much interest in itself, which is why it falls flat. There’s nothing driving it.
“Teacake” is also a horrible, prejudiced character, which is why he’s constantly trying to retrofit his history, ethnicity, backstory, age, etc.
KatyBuscemi was a mafia princess from Indianapolis who was supposedly raped and impregnated by a “prominent Democratic family,” forced into an abortion, married a mob snitch and drank herself into a stupor. Now that’s a character.
Unfortunately, Gen X Hater was never fleshed out , is totally one-dimensional, boring, charmless and suffers as a result.
Back to the drawing board.

Hold on a second - the article only goes off one stat - that Gen X disapproves of Biden in a larger percentage. That does NOT mean they are more Trump.
It's a show of our dissatisfaction with a President - and that's typical of Gen X mindset.
For a lot of Gen X, we've been disappointed in how slow the prosecution of Trump and Jan 6th has taken. Frustratingly and questionably slow.
Also a lot of us wanted Biden to push back more - like what Buttigieg and Harris/Walz are doing now. Plus this was taken in Dec 2023 when Biden was the Presidential nominee - we all knew his age and his verbal gaffes were going to be a problem.
So no - I don't subscribe that Gen X are more Trumpy - not at all.

Boomers in particular come in many flavors and it's telling that the usual definition actually refers to the small set of upper middle class Boomers.
Broadly, you had one group that served in Vietnam, got married while still in their early 20s, were never hippies, settled down in blue collar jobs and are now the grandparents of adults.
You had another, smaller group, albeit the one that everyone focuses on, that were hippies and went to college in the 60s, were young singles in the 70s, yuppies in the 80s, helicopter parents in the 90s and in 2024 are the grandparents of children in elementary school.

It's weird to think of Michael J Fox as a boomer (born in 1961). Some split the boomer generation into two parts:

Boomers II (aka Generation Jones): 1955 – 1964
