Queens

Is Queens gentrified like most of New York or different? I’ve been told it’s pretty dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 21October 27, 2024 11:50 PM

Queens is a borough of 2.5 million people and about 15 neighborhoods spanning almost 20 miles in each direction. Some neighborhoods are relatively dangerous, and others are extremely safe by NYC standards. There is no generalization possible. As in most places, the most dangerous places are where the poorest neighborhoods are in close proximity to much wealthier neighborhoods. There can also be conflicts in areas where one recent immigrant group is going up against another recent immigrant group, and since Queens is very segregated by continent or country of origin, those kinds of conflicts crop up often at the borders of neighborhoods. You can study the linked map to get some general idea.

I was born in Forest Hills and lived there until I was about 9. I remember it as being pretty safe, although busing did cause issues (this was early 70s). Then it was mostly middle-class Jewish white. Haven't been back in nearly 50 years and curious what the area is like now.

Boy our old LaSalle ran great!

OP, Queens is HUGE (like most of NYC), see R1. You cannot generalize. Ask about a neighborhood within a section of Queens, then we can talk.

by Anonymousreply 4October 27, 2024 5:14 PM

R1’s answer was intelligent and respectful. But I’m just astonished that OP can be either that ignorant or that unable to research or both.

OP, Queens is bigger than Milwaukee. Bigger than Sacramento. Bigger than Knoxville and Palm Springs. Way bigger than Seattle.

Is Seattle safe? Is Seattle dangerous? In an area of over 100 square miles, such questions are inane.

Parts of Queens look like Beverly Hills. Other parts look like the South Side of Chicago. Yet other parts of Queens look like London.

Don’t you read?

Queens is large with a multimillion population, so neighborhood scout treats it as a separate city. Its crime rate is extremely low for a large city. It’s rated as a 19, meaning it’s safer than 19% of US neighborhoods. That might sound low …

… but compare the swanky Beverly Hills area of LA:

And almost three times safer than Pittsburgh:

NYC is mad safe for a big city.

by Anonymousreply 11October 27, 2024 6:02 PM

R5: "[R1]’s answer was intelligent and respectful. But I’m just astonished that OP can be either that ignorant or that unable to research or both."

Are you new here, R5? Additionally, have you been out and about in the public recently?

Once I was at the ticket buying area outside the US Open in Flushing, Queens, must have been about 1998. A touristy man asked the ticket person where he could get a bite to eat without getting KILLED. My answer: practically anywhere. There are no tennis tickets, however.

The Google Maps shot of 22-37 37th Street in Astoria (Frank and Estelle Constanza's home address) looks like a really nice, dense urban block of well-kept homes with front walled gardens/terraces.
