The people next to me in the movie theater tonight were causing a commotion
They talked throughout the ENITRE movie, crinkled their candy wrappers, and at one point their phone rang, and they answered it. I wanted to murder all four of them!

The movie was CONCLAVE and the answer is BOOMERS. These old people ran a constant commentary on the movie. It's the kind of behavior I'd expect at the low-rent theater by my house. Instead, this was an upper class part of town. They never shut up! I wanted to murder them.

I hate the rudeness of people in theaters these days. The cell phones. The talking. I try to be tolerant of the noise of wrappers and popcorn because I know selling that stuff is how theaters survive. But people like me, boomers, seem increasingly oblivious. Is it early dementia, gummies, or treating a theater like their living room? I love film but I hate the distraction of the rude audiences, and find myself going to the theater less because of it. I suspect I am not an isolated case.

That didn't happen. And if it did, it wasn't that bad. And if it was, that's not a big deal. And if it is, that's not my fault. And if it was, I didn't mean it. And if I did, you deserved it.

I'll usually wait a week to go see a movie and then go to the 10:30 PM showing, never on a Friday or Saturday. It only takes one obnoxious shithead to ruin a movie and you'll usually get one with more than ten audience members. Groups of teenagers are the worst, in my experience. Perhaps Boomers this time but usually it's over excited kids. Especially nerdy kids or theater kids who don't get out much and are so proud to be out with friends they just can't contain themselves. Part exuberance. Part showing off. Our theater is 21 and up after 5pm. No children whatsoever. They serve cocktails and pub food to your seat. Tickets cost a bit more so it keeps the riff raff out.

The local "arthouse" theater where I live has started showing a new "be polite" trailer before showings. It's fucked up because they don't really instruct patrons clearly "Do Not Talk" and "Do Not Use Your Cellphone"- their message is "Limit talking to a minimum" and "No calling or texting". They're afraid of setting boundaries with the morons who think that talking at what they think is a low volume or surfing the internet silently on their phone (which drives me crazy to see a consistent burst of light to the side of my eyeline) is OK.
I have sometimes confronted people in the past either by telling them to be quiet or giving them death stares. It usually doesn't work (because assholes being assholes)... Has anyone ever gone the usher (good luck finding one) or ticket booth route? What happened? I would consider doing this but I don't think it would work (and after interrupting the movie I paid to see).

R52 - not OP, but a gen X movie nerd who almost always goes to a theater. Most films are designed to be viewed on a huge screen and the experience is better if you see them that way. Also, a properly behaved audience can add to that experience. There are endless popular and academic articles about the experience of us “collectively dreaming, awake in the dark”
The problems today are, as stated, many people no longer know how to behave in a theater - this now routinely happens at Broadway shows as well. And at concerts now there are so many small bright screens in view between you and the performers it is ridiculous — all for bad quality videos that nobody ever actually watches.
I also find the new led bulbs, or perhaps different fire code regulations, have caused the row end lights and exit signs to now be distractingly bright. I was at a packed screening of Megalopolis last weekend where everyone was well behaved, but the guy next to me had an Apple Watch that kept catching my eye - he wasn’t doing anything other than shifting in his seat — but we now live in a Blade Runner world full of bright vibrant distractions.
Megalopolis is a movie that should definitely be seen on a big screen and with a good audience — that doesn’t solve the film’s many issues, but it does at least make it an “interesting” experience.

R59 I believe your observation is correct. Last night I saw "Conclave" at the AMC and the red side aisle lights were almost as bad as a cell phone. And I agree with you about the collective group experience. I remember many years ago when attending the first weekend of "Brokeback Mountain" feeling the powerful impact of a fully packed house intensely invested in what was happening on the screen.

I had some high school girl sitting next to me fucking with her phone for two hours. I didn't go to another theater until the end run of Manchester by the Sea in 2017. The crowd was much more bearable. I don't go very often now. The volume of the commercials and previews, and the amount of time devoted to them, make for a misery-inducing experience.

This is true, here if you go to a movie with a bunch of black folks, get over it, candy wrappers, slurping drinks, interjections loud ones, kids, constant moving around etc. It is what it is, like going to Chuck E Cheese or Cicis and complaining about kids.
