The German industrialists put Hitler into office.
Nelson Peltz gathered a bunch of billionaires including Musk to organise funding for Trump.
[Quote]Last February, the billionaire financier Nelson Peltz summoned a group of about 20 wealthy, predominantly Republican donors and a handful of G.O.P. strategists to dinner at his $334 million waterfront estate in Palm Beach, Fla. There were plenty of people in the room who had publicly disavowed former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol — Peltz among them — but it was pretty clear now that he was going to be the candidate, and it was time to get onboard and figure out how to help him win

[quote] Do newspaper endorsements really matter at all for presidential elections?
Symbolically they do, but it’s unlikely they are swaying many Presidential voters, if they ever have. But this is a terrible moment to change a half-century of tradition. It’s a signal of capitulation to Trump’s lawlessness.

Aaaaand canceled my subscription. I was already fed up with the sanewashing, the both-sidesing, the increasing prominence of conservative columnists (like the execrable Marc Thiessen) and the burying of certain headlines below the fold. This is the nail in the coffin.
Shame on the very same outlet that published the Pentagon Papers and employed Woodward and Bernstein. Kay Graham is turning over in her grave.

I'm probably one of the few hundreds of French with a running sub to the Washington Post and that one really pissed me off. So I went to cancel my subscription but when you want to cancel there are many options and the two closest seem to be "Concern about WaPo content" and "other" where you typically have a text field to elaborate on the reasons but I see none and I want them to know the reason. Should I go with "Concern about the content"?
How, hello neighbor Belgian lez!
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 25, 2024 6:49 PM |
I went with “other.” The timing makes my reasons clear.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 25, 2024 6:51 PM |
I eventually went with the "concern", but just on the heels of the announcement, they'll figure it out by themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 25, 2024 7:00 PM |
Hello, Frenchgay! I went with ‘concern’ about the ‘content’ in the end. I also assumed that the timing would make it clear, but I would have preferred to write a few words, including ‘spineless’ and something about an unforgivable betrayal of their history and slogan.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 25, 2024 7:00 PM |
Disgraceful, unforgettable, unforgivable. Enabling a criminal insurrectionist. For shame now and always.

I really honestly used to believe that wealth signified that a person had a good, solid work ethic and that they were educated and provided goods and services to people who would benefit by buying and using them. My mom and dad liked to playfully toss around the catchphrase, “If you’re so smart why ain’t you rich?”
Now all it looks like is that the greedy really have no interest in anything but becoming richer, that for them no amount of money could ever be enough if even one person on earth has more, and that they are perfectly happy to buy themselves a scum-sucking politician if their one interest stands any chance at all of being furthered.
I don’t know how much more disillusioning I can take.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 25, 2024 7:47 PM |
Spoiler alert, R46: the rich, especially the super-rich, almost never NEVER earned their wealth.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 25, 2024 7:49 PM |
A good reason why newspapers should strive to remain independent.
In the Post’s case it is probably better that they were purchased by Bezos than shut down, but being owned by a man with such massive business interests has proven to be a conflict of interest.
I can’t help but wonder if he has ever shut down reporting adverse to Amazon’ s interests.

R46, I think it is still sort of true with the guys that build a business up from nothing. At least the first generation. Their children and grandchildren tho are another story. All they know is money.
The rich tech guys tho are a different matter.. Usually very liberal socially, but greedy to the max and with some strange goals based on sci-fi novels they read as kids. They saw the dystopian futures and thought "Robots are cool!"and missed the whole end of humanity angle.

Not exactly the answer--putting out of business a legitimate newspaper and its editors and writers because of its billionaire owner, R56.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 25, 2024 8:25 PM |
Bezos is being a coward (though to be fair he may have legal obligations to Amazon’s shareholders), but it makes no sense to call him a pro-Trump oligarch. He’s been funding a newspaper highly critical of Trump for years.
Some people just learn the lesson they want to learn from the news.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 25, 2024 8:26 PM |

And, R59, what good has it all been for if he refuses to have his paper endorse Harris at the most critical point in this country's history since the Civil War?

[quote]Not exactly the answer--putting out of business a legitimate newspaper and its editors and writers because of its billionaire owner, [R56].
Agreed. They still do good work, aside from this incident.
Additionally, I have two former co-workers on staff there, and I wouldn't want them to lose their jobs. Or anyone else. I've been at a newspaper that folded, and it sucks.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 25, 2024 8:30 PM |
R59 Nope. WP has been sane washing Trump for several years now. Excessively. Throwing in some articles critical of Trump to give the appearance of balancing out the normalizing of a very abnormal and dangerous individual is basically gaslighting the reading public. Democracy does die in darkness and the WP is in part responsible for dimming if not altogether turning off a bright light. I also cancelled my subscription today. The only major reputable news source I will have as a go-to site is now BBC News.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 25, 2024 9:08 PM |

Post staffers have consistently said for years that he does not interfere in their reporting or the editorials (see R45 above for one example), which is why they're so gobsmacked at this. (For one thing, their tech columnist used to badmouth Alexa and Amazon products all the time in the newspaper.)

IN OTHER NEWS:
Donald Trump met with executives at Blue Origin today—the space company owned and operated by Jeff Bezos.
WAPO endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in 2016. Bezos suffered for that forthright stance after Trump won the presidency. The Trump administration awarded a $10 billion cloud computing defense contract to Microsoft rather than Amazon in a move that was widely seen as politically motivated and was later cancelled by the Biden administration.
The Post’s absent proprietor does not, it appears, wish to put in such a situation again.

BTW, I've been challenged by others before on my personal boycott of amazon, but you really won't miss it. Order directly from the companies themselves, shop local, etc. Bezos was only part of the reason I started my boycott. All the fakes was the main reason. Any company that will sell you a fake or knock off "accidentally" because they lump their own stock in with that from unreliable sources is a total piece of shit that is not worth your money. (Yep, it's not just the third psrty sellers on there. You can order directly from Amazon and get scammed. If it hasn't happened to you yet, it will.) I'd rather not be electrocuted by a Chinese knockoff or send people gifts that turn out to be crap. Fuck Amazon.

Cancelled my subscription. Fuck you, Bezos. Read that in incognito mode you can still access some content, but not sure if that’s true or not but I’ll try it out.

Most of Bezos' capital comes from AWS and government/defense contracts.

R127 I’ve stopped my prime subscription last year after many, many years. I miss it much less than I thought I would. I do still buy the occasional thing that is difficult to source otherwise. I haven’t cut my kindle cord though as I’m in too deep at this point.

I happened to see a great interview with Pacino this week. When he met Serpico to research the role, he finally dared to ask the cop why he didn't just take the bribe money, it would have been so much easier. Serpico said: "If I took the money, who would I be when I listen to Beethoven?"
I grew up watching great films like 'Serpico', and yes, 'All The President's Men.' Bezos's abdication is shocking and culpable at this landmark moment in American history.

Everyone knows now why Bezos didn't endorse Harris. TFG meeting up with Blue Origin/Bezos today while TFG leaves his stupid cult followers for 3 hrs or more hours waiting out in the cold at Traverse City.

I read some article a few months ago, when there was that mutiny in their newsroom, saying that they are in pretty bad shape financially. Basically, the only big newspaper that's doing well is NYT since they were able to navigate the digital arena very successfully. Can WP afford to alienate the existing subscribers?
by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 26, 2024 1:14 PM |
Bezos does not care if the paper earns money. He is a rabid right wing douchebag.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 26, 2024 1:22 PM |
Tee-hee.
Am I imagining it, or is the NY Times on their digital front page more prominently re-positioning their endorsement of VP Harris since yesterday when the WaPo announced they were cancelling themselves out of fear of Trump?
The NY Times isn't blameless.
But I do hope, for my entertainment dollar, they're deliberately doing that to show-up the WaPo.

by Anonymous | reply 138 | October 26, 2024 2:51 PM |

This is correct, it's just a toy to him, one of many. It's the regular people who will be out of work who will suffer, if the WaPo lays off a bunch of staff thanks to the cancelled subscriptions.

I wonder who Bezos's Cuban family ancestors were allied with - Bautista or Castro?
If Bautista, cowering to right-wingers who suppress the press is a familiar move.
Of course, and I'll beat 'ya to it, Castro also oppressed the media.
But I think it if his ancestors were with Bautista, who knows, this behavior of kneeling to Trump may be in the family tree

The logic of conservative control of the media was never about making profitable media. It was about removing all contrary voices so the rich and corporations could loot the company unhindered by competing influences. A rational person would never have paid drunks like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaughs, or dolts like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, or ugly gasbags like Bill O'Reilly to spout lies. It was just giving money to otherwise unemployable untalented people to create a background noise in people's lives, like subliminal advertising to make people think the country is conservative when it isn't.

Yup, Walton family are huge GOP donors and anti-union. But, in recent years there have been articles claiming that Walmart's treatment of employees has improved.

THE EDITORIAL BOARD The Only Patriotic Choice for President
is now, at least on my digital NY Times front page, at the top spot.
Along with nice pick of Kamala.
They first published this in early Oct.
I'm calling it - to reposition it to the top of the page is deliberate by the NY Times since the WaPo announced they weren't endorsing Harris or Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | October 26, 2024 6:32 PM |
ooops, sorry, r153 I was too busy typing away to see your post.
Thanks for posting that.
Oh, and by the way, my understanding is that the Arthur Ochs Sulzberger has long wavered between holding on to the NY Times and selling it.
But what if Bezos makes him an offer for it?
Since Bezos is so in thrall to Trump and, apparently thinks Trump is going back into power, why not buy the Times and really coddle Trump during Trump's Reign of Terror and Error?

Luke 12:16-34 King James Version
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
