[QUOTE]The five men who make up the Central Park Five, and now call themselves the Exonerated Five, have filed a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump over his slanderous remarks during the presidential debate in September.

About damn time. Good for them. This is terrible political news right before the election btw.

by Anonymousreply 1October 21, 2024 4:02 PM

Perfectly said R1. This took a LONG time and they absolutely deserve to sue him and win big. He mounted a nasty misinformation campaign against them and ruined their lives. He's still lying about them and defaming them. This should be an open and closed court case. He's a racist fucking cunt and as bad as any other KKK member.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Philadelphia, cites several statements Trump made about the men during his Sept. 10 debate with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, after she blasted Trump for taking out an ad in 1989 calling for the then-teen defendants to be executed.

“Defendant Trump falsely stated [at the debate] that Plaintiffs killed an individual and pled guilty to the crime. These statements are demonstrably false,” the civil suit said.

“Plaintiffs never pled guilty to any crime and were subsequently cleared of all wrongdoing. Further, the victims of the Central Park assaults were not killed,” the complaint said.

The suit alleges that Trump’s conduct toward the men at the debate “was part of a continuing pattern of extreme and outrageous conduct dating back several years, thus constituting a continuing tort.”

The plaintiffs in the case, who now refer to themselves as the Exonerated Five, are Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron Brown and Korey Wise. Salaam is a member of the New York City Council.

Their suit, which alleges claims of defamation, false light and intentional infliction of emotional distress, requests damages of more than $75,000, with total compensatory and punitive damages to be determined at trial.

Hells yeah. In Philly too. Black voters in Penn stand up. I suspect this will also sway many white respectable housewives.

by Anonymousreply 4October 21, 2024 4:15 PM

Like the E. Jean Carroll case, I assume the Five will have to show how Trump's words caused Trump supporters to threaten them

by Anonymousreply 5October 21, 2024 4:15 PM

Why R5? They're suing Trump for defamation. What he said about them during the Presidential debate went out around the world.

Anyway - we can be certain that Trump's supporters will threaten them now for sure.

by Anonymousreply 6October 21, 2024 4:23 PM

Can someone sue for defamation if it caused no harm?

by Anonymousreply 7October 21, 2024 4:25 PM

R7 I was thinking they might not have standing since they actually did confess and were convicted though obviously later overturned. At any juncture, this is great political capital for Harris/Walz.

by Anonymousreply 8October 21, 2024 4:28 PM

Trump's defamation caused harm and emotional distress R7. Clear cut case.

R8 - here's what happened. They were all children at the time (14 - 16 years old):

"On April 19, 1989, several people were attacked in Manhattan’s Central Park by what 911 callers said was a group of dozens of Black and Hispanic teenagers terrorizing the park. The attacks, most notably the assault and rape of then 28-year-old jogger Meili, came amid heightened racial and socioeconomic tensions in New York City as the divide between poor communities and the rich continued to widen. The five men who sued Trump Monday, who were between the ages of 14 and 16 at the time and all Black or Latino, were brought in for questioning following the attacks. All five denied having anything to do with the assaults but, after hours of interrogation, four agreed to provide written and videotaped statements falsely admitting to the crime according to Monday’s lawsuit. The statements, made under duress, were all recanted shortly after.

On May 4, weeks after the attacks, the boys were indicted and charged with attempted murder, rape, sodomy, assault, robbery, sexual abuse and riot. They pleaded not guilty on all counts but were convicted in the attacks. There was no forensic evidence linking them to the crimes, according to the complaint. All five served sentences ranging from seven to 13 years before they were exonerated. The Central Park 5, later called the “Exonerated 5,” sued the city for false arrest, malicious prosecution and racially motivated conspiracy, among other claims, in 2003. The lawsuit settled for $41 million in 2014".

by Anonymousreply 9October 21, 2024 4:35 PM

The prosecutor at the time, even after the Central Park 5 were exonerated, say something like "I STILL think they had something to do with it!' when there was not a shred of evidence linking them to the crime and the real perpetrator was captured.

R10 She was a racist ass bitch. So many in power in NYC during that time were indifferent to black and brown lives.

by Anonymousreply 11October 21, 2024 4:53 PM

Oh look. Another Trump thread.

[QUOTE] Can someone sue for defamation if it caused no harm?

Trump said they pled guilty when they never did. He made it seem like they weren’t claiming innocence the whole time, when they in fact were.

Of course, during the time, Trump took out a full page ad in the NY Times, I think, demanding that they get the death penalty

by Anonymousreply 14October 21, 2024 8:13 PM

1989? I don't think this will go very far LOL.

by Anonymousreply 15October 21, 2024 8:16 PM

R15, Grump said it again in the debate.

by Anonymousreply 16October 21, 2024 8:17 PM

I'd love to take out a full page ad in the NYT, WaPo, LATimes, Chicago Tribune, etc., seeking the death penalty for Donald Trump: crimes against humanity; treasonous crimes against the United States and its Constitution.

by Anonymousreply 17October 21, 2024 8:18 PM

They look so old! I know it was a long time ago but still.

Oh, Did they lose their jobs or something? LOL

*What are some terms that are way overused by the far left?*

[quote]The attacks, most notably the assault and rape of then 28-year-old jogger Meili, came amid heightened racial and socioeconomic tensions in New York City as the divide between poor communities and the rich continued to widen.

That divide is on steroids today.

by Anonymousreply 22October 21, 2024 8:58 PM

And Trump helped widen it further, R22. It’s a shame Kamala doesn’t do a better job of making that case. She should be out at a campaign rally with the 5 tomorrow, but she probably won’t touch it.

by Anonymousreply 23October 21, 2024 11:16 PM

r22 it's a whole huge complicated story and there are many, many other players besides Trump.

by Anonymousreply 24October 21, 2024 11:22 PM

The funniest thing about this thread is that the reviled r15 r20 is r1 logged into a different persona

by Anonymousreply 25October 21, 2024 11:28 PM

And, as is his habit, he will continue to defame them as he does E. Jean Carroll even though he lost the case to her. Even though, by continuing to defame her he looks even guiltier and stupider. And causing himself to owe more money.

It will be the same with The Central Park 5: he will post and mention about them at his rallies, call them "liars" and worse. Because Donnie is always right and never accepts real responsibility!

by Anonymousreply 26October 21, 2024 11:44 PM

He’s trying to win over black men, so he won’t mention this at all, R26. You won’t hear about it after today unless the Harris campaign capitalizes on it, and I have no faith in that happening. It will fall by the wayside as the media focuses on the latest zany distractions from Trump.

by Anonymousreply 27October 22, 2024 12:00 AM

He certainly decided that bringing up E. Jean Carroll multiple times on Truth Social, in interviews, and at rallies after his guilty verdict regarding raping her would help him "get" that covered Suburban Women vote, too.

He's a sociopath, R27. And he says what he wants, whenever he wants.

by Anonymousreply 28October 22, 2024 12:06 AM

These are two completely different issues, R28. E Jean is accusing him of rape, and he vehemently denies it ever happened. Attacking her might help him with Republican women who want to believe he’s telling the truth. The more he protests and goes on offense, the stronger and less guilty he looks to them. That’s not the case with black men, who might as well be from another planet compared to suburban white women.

by Anonymousreply 29October 22, 2024 12:14 AM

Exonerated Five. I like that.
