Why did Matthew Broderick‘s career go straight down the shitter?

Poor thing.

by Anonymousreply 78October 21, 2024 10:39 PM

He got old

by Anonymousreply 1October 20, 2024 6:33 AM

Did he burn bridges? Jennifer Grey didn’t pay him any favors in her autobiography.

by Anonymousreply 2October 20, 2024 7:36 AM

What did she write about him, r2?

by Anonymousreply 3October 20, 2024 7:41 AM

Sometimes having a baby face can hurt. You making this thread made me aware that he’s in a lot of my favorite films of all time, never really realized. Ferris Beuller, Glory, And The Freshman. The problem is he still looked 19 in his 30s. And then he’s short and became middle aged, which is a weird phase for babyface looking dudes. I’m dreading the fuck outta of it. He aged well tho.

by Anonymousreply 4October 20, 2024 7:49 AM

1987 car crash On August 5, 1987, while driving a rented car outside Tempo, Northern Ireland. Broderick crossed into the wrong lane and collided head-on with another car. The driver, Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, were both killed instantly.

He got fined £175 pounds even though it was all his fault because he was on the wrong side of the road.

by Anonymousreply 5October 20, 2024 7:52 AM

He's still very active in the theatre scene. He probably has the career he wants.

by Anonymousreply 6October 20, 2024 7:55 AM

Don’t be a horse’s ass OP

That’s my job.

by Anonymousreply 7October 20, 2024 8:01 AM

He got older. Not only did his looks change, he now has unrecognizable old man voice. Gone is Ferris Bueller.

by Anonymousreply 8October 20, 2024 8:11 AM

His last two movies are the Sean Hayes tranny comedy and the Jennifer Lawrence prostitute comedy.

by Anonymousreply 9October 20, 2024 8:42 AM

He and Laura Benanti are very funny in No Hard Feelings, R9.

by Anonymousreply 10October 20, 2024 9:27 AM

Considering you're both white and the same age, you already know what it's like.

by Anonymousreply 11October 20, 2024 9:43 AM

He aged like a bowl of dairy based pudding.

by Anonymousreply 12October 20, 2024 9:46 AM

Didn't he kill somebody?

by Anonymousreply 13October 20, 2024 9:57 AM

Oh, I should've read the thread. He killed two people. Perhaps that had something to do with it. Maybe he's uninsurable on account of being a murderer.

by Anonymousreply 14October 20, 2024 9:59 AM

Let's acknowledge he was a wholesome presence in nuclear threat nail biter War Games.

by Anonymousreply 15October 20, 2024 10:05 AM

[quote] Oh, I should've read the thread. He killed two people. Perhaps that had something to do with it. Maybe he's uninsurable on account of being a murderer.

That happened in 1987, nearly 40 years ago. I don't think it affected his career. But perhaps you think Ryan Murphy should do a miniseries about the accident and get him exonerated.

by Anonymousreply 16October 20, 2024 10:07 AM

He was a "teen" star, so essentially a child actor. He never adequately transferred over into adult male starring roles on a commercial scale ala Tom Cruise, who also began his career as a "juvenile male" type. Actors are cast based on type and their is an age type as much as any other. It's fairly common for female actors to become well known as ingenues and never be able to maintain their level of popularity/ appeal in adult leading lady roles.

by Anonymousreply 17October 20, 2024 2:09 PM

He got fugly

by Anonymousreply 18October 20, 2024 2:21 PM

He was so cute in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

by Anonymousreply 19October 20, 2024 3:01 PM

The film version of The Producers plus he aged out of the type of roles which made him popular. Not uncommon.

by Anonymousreply 20October 20, 2024 3:05 PM

This is actually a great day to watch Ferris. Nice easy fall Sunday, perfect weather here on the East coast. I think I’ll queue it up on my Apple TV while I clean the house. Thanks, R19.

by Anonymousreply 21October 20, 2024 3:06 PM

When you look at his Wiki under Film, TV and Broadway - he hasn't really slowed down.

He's just not headlining blockbuster films anymore - but few men in their 60s are.

He's had an incredible career on Broadway - and in Hollywood.

Seems like he takes the roles he wants, which is enviable for any true actor.

Yeah-the old thing…

by Anonymousreply 23October 20, 2024 3:08 PM

Maybe he could play Hitler or has he?

by Anonymousreply 24October 20, 2024 3:10 PM

R7 It’s also your job to bring home the bacon.

by Anonymousreply 25October 20, 2024 3:26 PM

He aged much better than Tammy that’s for sure.

by Anonymousreply 26October 20, 2024 3:32 PM

I don't think he's ambitious which is funny because he married someone who is ambitious enough for both of them. He does a lot of theatre and some character work in films. Still has a decent career.

by Anonymousreply 27October 20, 2024 3:37 PM

R27 has it. By the time he married SJP in the late 90s he had starred enough hits to have at least a million bucks saved in the bank. Then she created a cash cow with Sex & City and he probably was like—babe do your thing, I’m doing roles that speak to me.

by Anonymousreply 28October 20, 2024 3:41 PM

Mafuckin!!!!

You POS junkie.

by Anonymousreply 29October 20, 2024 4:07 PM

I’ve always liked him. My friend and I used to go to our local annual science fiction convention, staying in the hotel for the weekend, and Ladyhawke always played on the last day as we packed up to leave. It wasn’t a great movie but I liked all the leads — Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer are both gorgeous — and it became a tradition.

My friend is dead now, Broderick and I are too old, and the convention has long since stopped piping its own three channels of video programming, DVDs killed that, but the memories and the affection I feel for him do last.

by Anonymousreply 30October 20, 2024 4:51 PM

'The Last Shot' is one of his best movies. I don't generally care for Broderick or Alec Baldwin as people but they are good actors and great in this movie.

In his autobiography, Edward Zwick talks about how difficult Broderick was on the set of Glory. Broderick’s mom ran interference and tried to rewrite the script to make Matthew’s character the star of the movie, rather than the black unit featuring Denzel Washington and others.

R32 In all fairness he was the biggest name at the time. Glory is one of my favorite films. RIP Andre Baugher.

by Anonymousreply 34October 20, 2024 5:21 PM

He is six days older than me. I’ve stood next him—it made me feel a least a decade younger.

by Anonymousreply 35October 20, 2024 5:27 PM

I guess I never really liked him. And Ferris Bueller was such an obnoxious character nothing else he did could ever redeem himself in my eyes.

by Anonymousreply 36October 20, 2024 5:29 PM

Glory was ensemble casting at a very high level.

by Anonymousreply 37October 20, 2024 5:34 PM

R36, that’s exactly how I feel about Broderick.

by Anonymousreply 38October 20, 2024 5:34 PM

R33, looks more like Spader. Including the ostensible vagina.

by Anonymousreply 39October 20, 2024 5:38 PM

R36 The Freshman is such an underrated film but apparently Marlo Brando was such a dick on set and such a tyrant that it affected the film’s promotion.

by Anonymousreply 40October 20, 2024 5:39 PM

R36, WTHell? He’s a righteous dude!

by Anonymousreply 41October 20, 2024 5:39 PM

He kill two women and ruined Jennifer Grey’s career. And, there’s more!

by Anonymousreply 42October 20, 2024 5:41 PM

He semi-retired. He's really into horses and spends most of his time tending them.

by Anonymousreply 43October 20, 2024 5:42 PM

Teasnake, hush. Must you infect every thread with your random shit?

by Anonymousreply 44October 20, 2024 5:43 PM

It didn’t. He works selective and since he’s not young anymore he’s probably off the limited radar of the OP.

by Anonymousreply 45October 20, 2024 5:44 PM

He's starring in a DC tryout for Broadway for a play based on Sinclair Lewis' "Babbit". He's not exactly not working.

by Anonymousreply 46October 20, 2024 5:48 PM

[quote] The Freshman is such an underrated film but apparently Marlo Brando was such a dick on set and such a tyrant that it affected the film’s promotion.—Prince-Akeem

You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about (as usual). Brando really liked this film and the role and did nothing to derail it.

When will you just stop existing already?

by Anonymousreply 47October 20, 2024 5:49 PM

R47 when you get a life. I have read multiple stories on this throughout the years as The Freshman is one of my favorite films. He was drama. I didn’t say he intentionally derailed the film you uncritical reader. Marlon Brando was bipolar and he did talk shit about it and then changed his opinion.

by Anonymousreply 48October 20, 2024 5:56 PM

[quote] I didn’t say he intentionally derailed the film you uncritical reader.

[quote] Marlo Brando was such a dick on set and such a tyrant that it affected the film’s promotion.

In fact, that's exactly what you did say. Why don't do a little more blow, you waste of breath.

by Anonymousreply 49October 20, 2024 6:01 PM

The Fresh Prince keeps posting his on-the-ground knowledge of films released when he was still sharting a diaper. Love it.

by Anonymousreply 50October 20, 2024 6:01 PM

The 1999 film Election was a delicious black comedy starring Broderick as a teacher and newcomer Reese Witherspoon as student Tracy Flick. Really well-crafted movie. Made me appreciate Broderick as an actual legitimate adult actor and not "that perpetually baby-faced guy from Ferris Bueller." Great casting. I won't say anything about the film, you should really just watch it. It's hysterically funny and dark.

He did a bunch of bombs in the 90s that did him in.

“The Cable Guy”, “Godzilla”, and “Inspector Gadget” were all bombs that hurt him.

He was washed up and making a comeback in “The Stepford Wives” and that probably made it worse because that was a huge bomb too.

by Anonymousreply 52October 20, 2024 6:26 PM

God, R52, I had forgotten about ALL of those films. They really did not leave an impression.

by Anonymousreply 53October 20, 2024 6:29 PM

I think Hal Holbrook is his real father.

by Anonymousreply 54October 20, 2024 6:31 PM

R35 That's because you look so much younger than your actual age, everybody tells you that.

by Anonymousreply 55October 20, 2024 6:32 PM

He’s a privileged nepo baby with limited range, and was never an alpha male leading man.

by Anonymousreply 56October 20, 2024 6:40 PM

R55 said no one, ever. Next to MB, even you would look like Miss America

by Anonymousreply 57October 20, 2024 7:41 PM

[quote] He semi-retired. He's really into horses and spends most of his time tending them.

Her name is Sarah Jessica Parker.

by Anonymousreply 58October 20, 2024 8:09 PM

Matthew and his filly sold out Plaza Suite on Broadway and in the West End. Not too shabby.

by Anonymousreply 59October 20, 2024 8:27 PM

He had a long film career but he's definitely aged out of cuteness (cuteness generally doesn't age well). He started moving toward character roles as long ago as Election.

I wouldn't say his career is in the shitter, but it definitely changed trajectories. He's had massive success on stage. But despite some big movies in his 20s he was never at the Pitt/Clooney juncture, then or now.

by Anonymousreply 60October 20, 2024 8:30 PM

His father played the father on Family. Sometimes you can sort of tell a resemblance.

Broderick had a very good career, both in films and stage. He was never a superstar, but he didn't need or want to be. He still lives his personal life relatively simple in NYC. I'd rather have a career like Matthew Broderick rather than Tom Cruise.

by Anonymousreply 63October 21, 2024 1:34 AM

“But despite some big movies in his 20s he was never at the Pitt/Clooney juncture, then or now.”

Thanks for popping our balloon—we were all too delusional until you posted.

by Anonymousreply 64October 21, 2024 2:18 AM

R63 has never seen Matt’s drunk or stoned ass sitting at a bar in the West Village, trying to kill the time. We know better.

by Anonymousreply 65October 21, 2024 2:20 AM

He was pretty cute in Only Murders In The Building Season Three, the broadway-themed season. He was a good sport. They poked a lot of harmless fun at him and he wend right along with it.

by Anonymousreply 66October 21, 2024 2:21 AM

Even I wouldn’t fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 67October 21, 2024 2:23 AM

I forgot about that role, r66. It was pretty funny, he drove Martin Short’s character nuts.

by Anonymousreply 68October 21, 2024 3:12 AM

What did she say, r2? For those of us too lazy to read her book.

by Anonymousreply 69October 21, 2024 7:14 AM

Imagine someone like a MB or Michael J. Fox becoming superstars today?

by Anonymousreply 70October 21, 2024 7:31 AM

[quote] Did he burn bridges?

No, he ran people over.

by Anonymousreply 71October 21, 2024 10:39 AM

Why did I reply to this stupid thread?

by Anonymousreply 72October 21, 2024 12:15 PM

His mother sounds like an absolute cunt.

by Anonymousreply 73October 21, 2024 12:55 PM

Matthew Broderick was 27 when he did Glory! And his Mommy was on-set, bullying the filmmakers in an effort to turn it into The Matthew Broderick Story?

How humiliating for him. That's one of the most pathetic things I've ever heard!

by Anonymousreply 74October 21, 2024 1:16 PM

No. It was humiliating to the rest of the cast.

by Anonymousreply 75October 21, 2024 3:45 PM

Jennifer Grey said in her bio that when she first met Broderick's mother one of the first things she said to her was something along the lines of "You know your dad is gay, right?"

by Anonymousreply 76October 21, 2024 5:46 PM

Shitter!

by Anonymousreply 77October 21, 2024 6:47 PM

R76, what a cunt!
