1921 Tulsa Massacre survivors

Viola Ford Fletcher achieved the most rarefied status of becoming a supercentenarian - only one in 1000 centenarians - in May. And her fellow survivor, Lessie Benningfield Randle, is due to celebrate her entry into this exclusive club on Nov. 10. A remarkable sidenote to this tragedy.

African-Americans consistently hold the title of oldest American. Itā€™s quite surprising given their small share of the population and the medical and economic deprivation most suffered.
