‘Gladiator II’ early reactions are very positive
The film held its first screening last night and the reaction has been overall positive, with Denzel being declared the frontrunner and a lock for Supporting Actor.
Paul Mescal is the classic case of taking an indie actor and throwing them in a big studio blockbuster. It either works out (think Laura Dern in Jurassic Park) or doesn’t (think Alicia Silverstone in Batman & Robin), and it allegedly worked here.

This guy didn’t feel it was as good as the first but that Denzel steals the show.

I don't recognise any of these names except for Mavity of NBP.
In any case, early reactions are always glowing, let's wait for the big critics to chime in.

R6 you don’t recognize Deadline, posted at OP?
You don’t need to recognize the people commenting. These are a lot of smaller and independent critics, film school students or film school graduates invited. I trust them more than the big critics.
Also, keep that same energy for all things. You don’t question the people who praise a movie like Queer but do this? 😂

The smaller pages are the ones who will give you honest reviews. The big critics always go along with what is expected.

It would be surprising if the film is very good, given Ridley Scott’s track record
Napoleon
House of Gucci
The Last Duel
All the Money in the World
Alien Covenant
Exodus Gods and Kings
The Counselor
Prometheus
Robin Hood

Also lines like “Denzel is guaranteed to win his third Oscar” are signs of industry fellating
Best Supporting Actor is widely seen as Guy Pearce’s to lose, for his performance in The Brutalist.

Macrinus, who is played by Denzel Washington, was not black African. He was of Berber North African lineage, and he never was based in Rome. He was in Antioch.

Here are 25 minutes of the Gladiator II panel discussion after the screening last night. Paul Mescal, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington and Fred Hechinger participated.

If they put a Gladiator poster over a Wicked poster, I WILL BE SHOCKED AND DISRESPECTED.
