Ludwig van Beethoven

From serene string quartets to epic symphonies, Beethoven is probably the greatest composer to ever live.

What are some of your favorite works?

The Cavatina from his 13th String Quartet is the last piece of music on both the Voyager I and Voyager II

He WAS Ludwig van Beethoven!

by Anonymousreply 3October 17, 2024 4:42 PM

Well, he still is. He’s just dead.

I think, as Beethoven did, that the 8th is one of his greatest symphonies. Critics tend to find it light and seldom take it seriously. Instead, it's a master class in everything that makes a symphony great, including, yes, humor.

r5 Humor in a symphony?

by Anonymousreply 6October 17, 2024 4:56 PM

I prefer MOZART!

Definitely Speed King. Way ahead of his time.

Yes, I love him. I chose the Shepherd's Thanksgiving After The Storm from The Pastoral Symphony (No.6) as the final piece of music at both my parents' funerals. Beyond sublime.

As for humour, Wagner called the 7th Symphony the 'Apotheosis of the dance', and if you include high good humour as an ingredient in dance then immerse in that, and rejoice. Riches in LVB to last a lifetime.

He's no Mahler.

The septet was once one of his most popular pieces but is now generally neglected. It’s a beautiful piece that shows how skilled he was at writing lighter music.

I prefer Mozart and Haydn because they sound happier. I like Beethoven's violin concertos but not his symphonies so much.

7th - second movement.

Fidelio, despite its issues, is a masterpiece of an opera. It’s a shame Beethoven only did one.
