Every time I saw this story posted anywhere on social media today, the comments were 99% “who”? And “never heard of him”.

I don’t think, if the venue Trump was at had a current ASCAP license, Wainwright and his record label can do anything about him playing the song. Using it in an ad, no, but if I’m correct, the ASCAP license allows them to play anything they want.

Somewhere along the way this relatively previously unknown song from a marginally successful songwriter/singer has become an anthem of sorts for the cognoscenti. It’s dreary and boring, very much like the monotone Wainwright.
