Liam Payne is dead after a fall from his hotel balcony in Argentina ... TMZ has learned.

The former One Direction singer died Wednesday evening. Several witnesses at the hotel where he was staying in Buenos Aires tell us Liam fell from his room on the 3rd floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel. We do not know if it was intentional or accidental.

TMZ obtained a photo showing Liam's body on a wooden deck at the hotel with tables and chairs nearby. We're not showing the whole body, but you can clearly see his tattoos -- a clock on his left forearm, and a scorpion on his abdomen.

Witnesses say this happened shortly after 5 PM in Buenos Aires ... and that Liam had been acting erratic in the hotel lobby earlier -- he smashed his laptop, and had to be carried back to his room.

OMG! That is the most shocking one so far this year. Gulp. RIP

The hotel employee says that a hotel guest presently on the premises/grounds, has suffered from what appears to be a drug overdose, & remains completely unresponsive after various attempts to get him to “wake up” or “come to”.

It is not specified what part of the hotel Payne is in. The caller doesn’t specify the lobby, his private suite, the bar, etc., but I’m wagering the call was made from Payne’s room, since the caller immediately said a guest had overdosed on drugs.

The call is not completed, due to the caller leaving the call while the dispatcher continued to ask more questions. I’m assuming he may have started to come to, & had a major freak out, jumping off or falling off the balcony?

Please do not take this as a narrative of what happened precisely, as I am not there & am merely going by what is being said & filling in the blanks with hypothetical scenarios that might best fit the conversation & the end result of events.

It really could have been a horrible & unfortunate accident.

Must be humiliating to go from being in a mega-famous boyband to being dropped by your label.

Sounds like he had a bipolar diagnosis with his talk of "mania" in interviews. Can make sobriety extra challenging if not well managed. I'm still curious who the woman with the kid in the lobby was, the one the manager was translating for who he said he'd give $20k. Seems very hectic and disruptive in a busy hotel. I think him doing drugs in front of staff likely delayed their seeking help lest he be arrested. Thus the emphasis on an ambulance only when they finally did call.

I've never really understood why people do meth but bipolar people I know are all about the uppers - coke, nicotine and caffeine - and downers - booze and narcotics to amplify or offset mania and depression.

Still wondering where Roger went after getting him back to his room. Was it after that he went back down to the lobby and fell on his face? When did that guy leave? If family and close friends or girlfriend were aware of the label news, even more reason for someone to be with him. That IS a lot to cope with and was his primary sense of self. 1. She wasn't a 'new girlfriend.' They'd been living together for two years.

2. She was the opposite of a handler/minder. Kate Cassidy weighs about 100lb and is only 25. He met when she was his waitress in a Charleston restaurant. She is a party girl who is always posting pictures of alcoholic drinks on her IG. She probably encouraged him to drink and do coke to keep her company.

3. She did leave two days before he died but his friend Roger Nores was still around.

4. Anyone who saw his daily Snap Chats where he's flushed and rambling could tell that he was back on drugs.

It must be intensely disturbing for 1D fans to see that photo.
