Why did Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn never work together?

They were contemporaries, yet never seem to have appeared in a single film together.

Was it because neither wanted to share the Lead Actress spotlight with the other in the same film?

They were in a European cheapie horror called, "Bed Death" (1974) about two lesbians who no longer have intimacies. When they rent a room to a pretty young thing (Susan Penhaligon) simmering resentments explode ala 'Virginia Woolf?'.

They didn’t work at the same studio.

Because dear child, no movie screen could ever physically support that much ham…..and sapphic ham at that.

OP way back in the day, an actor was 'owned' by a studio. Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn were under contract with different studios.
