Spain is a much more gay friendly country than Italy. More people comfortable with their sexuality, fewer closet cases than you find with Italians.

Spaniards are like a lot of posh English men to me. Even the straight ones often ping to high heavens.

In Spain, social circles are quite important to daily life and nearly everyone has gay friends and relatives, in many cases since childhood. There's not a lot of reason to conceal one's sexuality, and gay and straight people mix easily, without the token gay friend thing seen in some other places.

A surprising number if young men, straight from all evidence, will speak rather openly about wanting to try sex with a man to see what it is like, and not as a sloppy drunken comment denied later as a joke. Nor does it come off as the remarks if closet cases so much as someone who acknowledges some curiosity, either intellectual curiosity or purely physical.

Then, no R34/R28. Cynicism about government and institutions, yes, relayed with a fair amount of humor. Cynicism about life? Definitely not, that's rather antithetical to the Spanish character. A good measure of optimism (not the blind or misplaced sorts) and generosity and pleasure in life are much more essential in Spanish life.

R42 Yes. Went to Madrid about 15 years ago. Very underrated city. Great architecture, amazing art museums, tasty food, amazing gay nightlife and of course gorgeous men. Madrid's gay neighborhood is Chueca, but I saw gay men everywhere, including gay couples holding hands and kissing. It was a normal thing even back then. Madrid seemed like a very gay friendly city.
