Usually the experience of being judged for something you didn't control and can't change would make someone kinder and less judgemental, whereas that's clearly not the case here.

One vet I know , now dead, was pulled out of a burning chopper alive by co workers and the only thing he wore was one boot . Everything else inc his hat was burnt off. He would spend months in a burn unit before he finally died.
