Why can’t we just ban cable news?

And go back to the old days where people watched the evening news for 30 minutes and listened to facts being reported instead of 24 hours a day of commentary and spin?

by Anonymousreply 30October 14, 2024 1:41 AM

I've banned cable from my home, and saved a lot of money. I'm free of all cable news.

by Anonymousreply 1October 13, 2024 3:20 AM

Why can’t we make choices?

by Anonymousreply 2October 13, 2024 3:21 AM

R2 Because idiots watch it and become obsessed. Even watching porn would be more worthwhile.

by Anonymousreply 3October 13, 2024 3:23 AM

Because of free speech, the refuge of every lying rightwing propagandist these days. Like that father and son shitstain pair who pushed QAnon from the Philippines (I think it was).

Of course, once America falls off the fascist cliff, guess what will happen to their beloved free speech?

by Anonymousreply 4October 13, 2024 3:28 AM

Now that I do a lot of.

by Anonymousreply 5October 13, 2024 3:33 AM

Darn that pesky First Amendment.

If your guy Trump gets in, maybe he’ll do away with it for you like he’s promised.

by Anonymousreply 6October 13, 2024 3:35 AM

Most evenings it’s the PBS News Hour in my home. I find it to be on of the best sources of news. On Fridays I get Jonathan Capehart and David Brooks who give both sides of the political spectrum. They also present news from other parts of the world.

Better yet: porn with cable reporters

by Anonymousreply 8October 13, 2024 3:51 AM

R8 Imagine Joy Reid’s tits out.

by Anonymousreply 9October 13, 2024 3:52 AM

“Pete, you mad bro?”

by Anonymousreply 10October 13, 2024 4:06 AM

R9 - no thanks, I'll stick with just the guys

by Anonymousreply 11October 13, 2024 4:11 AM

The word Free speech is starting to sound like a metaphor for the self appointed right to tell lies without consequence.

by Anonymousreply 12October 13, 2024 4:33 AM

OP = commie

by Anonymousreply 13October 13, 2024 4:37 AM

Reagan shit-canning the Fairness Doctrine didn't help.

by Anonymousreply 14October 13, 2024 4:39 AM

Gee I wonder why ever he did that

by Anonymousreply 15October 13, 2024 4:44 AM

Don't worry. News will be banned as of January. It will be beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 16October 13, 2024 4:55 AM

[quote] Reagan shit-canning the Fairness Doctrine didn't help.

That doesn’t apply to cable.

by Anonymousreply 17October 13, 2024 10:17 AM

The fairness doctrine of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that fairly reflected differing viewpoints..

In 1987, the FCC abolished the fairness doctrine, prompting some to urge its reintroduction through either Commission policy or congressional legislation.

The FCC removed the rule that implemented the policy from the Federal Register in August 2011.

The fairness doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows, or editorials.

The doctrine did not require equal time for opposing views but required that contrasting viewpoints be presented. The demise of this FCC rule has been cited as a contributing factor in the rising level of party polarization in the United States.

It’s too bad there is not a FF function in life then people could avoid everything that they don’t like or triggers them.

by Anonymousreply 19October 13, 2024 11:44 AM

R18, we know.

by Anonymousreply 20October 13, 2024 1:26 PM

Fairness doctrine only pertained to broadcast channels, not cable. We still would have had CNN and all the they stupid news channels regardless.

by Anonymousreply 21October 13, 2024 1:27 PM

R21 The fairness doctrine worked and we need it back, badly. It could be expanded to include whatever forum we chose. This free speech crap has gotten very crusty. People are too stupid for the right to lie freely to continue. Congress could do it in a second.

by Anonymousreply 22October 13, 2024 4:38 PM

Who the fuck is "we", bitch

MAGA loons call it the 2nd Amendment.

by Anonymousreply 24October 13, 2024 7:43 PM

Banning? We had not thought about that. Thanks DL. So on reflection:

In 2025, after our glorious win, any dangerous website that encourages unsafe high risk disease spreading sex in any way will be fined and then banned on 2nd occurrence,

We are going to clean up this pervert shit asap

Praise The Lord

by Anonymousreply 25October 13, 2024 8:21 PM

Why can’t you eat my ass like any stranger on the street?

by Anonymousreply 26October 13, 2024 9:53 PM

[quote] The fairness doctrine worked and we need it back, badly. It could be expanded to include whatever forum we chose.

No, we cannot. You’re too stupid to live.

by Anonymousreply 27October 14, 2024 1:06 AM

Your mean, R27. I invoke the DL Fairness Doctrine and have you ejected into space!

by Anonymousreply 28October 14, 2024 1:25 AM

Stop watching it, OP. There’s your ban.

by Anonymousreply 29October 14, 2024 1:35 AM

Basically it's an out - if it's a cable show, it can't be regulated. That includes FCC's rules on false information.

If we expanded FCC to include cable news, social media, and other platforms - the problem would be solved.

Newspapers, local TV and radio stations, broadcast TV and radio are all under FCC rules. These others - cable, social media, etc. - are not because it's technically a private subscription.

The FCC has rules against false information - but it doesn't apply to cable, social, media, etc.
