And go back to the old days where people watched the evening news for 30 minutes and listened to facts being reported instead of 24 hours a day of commentary and spin?
Why can’t we just ban cable news?

I've banned cable from my home, and saved a lot of money. I'm free of all cable news.

Why can’t we make choices?

R2 Because idiots watch it and become obsessed. Even watching porn would be more worthwhile.

Because of free speech, the refuge of every lying rightwing propagandist these days. Like that father and son shitstain pair who pushed QAnon from the Philippines (I think it was).
Of course, once America falls off the fascist cliff, guess what will happen to their beloved free speech?

Darn that pesky First Amendment.
If your guy Trump gets in, maybe he’ll do away with it for you like he’s promised.

Most evenings it’s the PBS News Hour in my home. I find it to be on of the best sources of news. On Fridays I get Jonathan Capehart and David Brooks who give both sides of the political spectrum. They also present news from other parts of the world.

The fairness doctrine of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that fairly reflected differing viewpoints..
In 1987, the FCC abolished the fairness doctrine, prompting some to urge its reintroduction through either Commission policy or congressional legislation.
The FCC removed the rule that implemented the policy from the Federal Register in August 2011.
The fairness doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows, or editorials.
The doctrine did not require equal time for opposing views but required that contrasting viewpoints be presented. The demise of this FCC rule has been cited as a contributing factor in the rising level of party polarization in the United States.

R18, we know.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 13, 2024 1:26 PM |
Fairness doctrine only pertained to broadcast channels, not cable. We still would have had CNN and all the they stupid news channels regardless.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 13, 2024 1:27 PM |
R21 The fairness doctrine worked and we need it back, badly. It could be expanded to include whatever forum we chose. This free speech crap has gotten very crusty. People are too stupid for the right to lie freely to continue. Congress could do it in a second.

Banning? We had not thought about that. Thanks DL. So on reflection:
In 2025, after our glorious win, any dangerous website that encourages unsafe high risk disease spreading sex in any way will be fined and then banned on 2nd occurrence,
We are going to clean up this pervert shit asap
Praise The Lord

by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 14, 2024 1:25 AM |
Stop watching it, OP. There’s your ban.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 14, 2024 1:35 AM |
Basically it's an out - if it's a cable show, it can't be regulated. That includes FCC's rules on false information.
If we expanded FCC to include cable news, social media, and other platforms - the problem would be solved.
Newspapers, local TV and radio stations, broadcast TV and radio are all under FCC rules. These others - cable, social media, etc. - are not because it's technically a private subscription.
The FCC has rules against false information - but it doesn't apply to cable, social, media, etc.
