Remembering “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood and Chaka Khan

This classic 80s song is one of my favorites.

Steve Winwood is an underrated gem. Valerie is still a banger.

No she didn’t Corpsr r2

It was a pivotal part of the film score to 1988’s Big Business with Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin.

"Arc of a Diver" is my fave. So sexy when he moans at the end!

by Anonymousreply 6October 12, 2024 1:36 AM

"While You See a Chance" also a great jam.

Chaka Khan sings with him in Higher Love. Steve Winwood is not dynamic to look at. In the video, they really should have featured Chaka because Steve looked like a wooden stick.

Did Chaka sing? It looked like she got paid to twirl 7 times

by Anonymousreply 9October 12, 2024 1:42 AM

Listen to the song and, IMO, it's obvious Chaka is singing.

“Higher Love” was the first time I acknowledged a greater range than mine.

I was under-educated in vocals and was told I was supposed to have vocal training at age 11. Oh, well. His sound is awesome and I can revel in it.

R5 Exactly. That charming old film was so much fun. A great cast, Lily Tomlin, Bette Midler, Fred Ward, all great.

The Whitney Houston version was only released in Japan as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the “I’m Your Baby Tonight” CD. I don’t like it as much as the original, but I still like it. It was a good new Jack swing version. I believe in 2019 some DJ sampled it in one of his songs.

Very strange song to end Big Business with.

by Anonymousreply 14October 12, 2024 3:13 AM

r9 You're an idiot

by Anonymousreply 15October 12, 2024 4:23 AM

Chaka Khan… Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan 📣

by Anonymousreply 16October 12, 2024 4:29 AM

I just realized his name is not Steve Windwood.

by Anonymousreply 17October 12, 2024 6:06 AM

Winwood is a talented musician. But he’s one of those guys that I didn’t realise until decades into his career based his vocal stylings on Ray Charles. Like Van Morrison.

Chaka also sang background on Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer. It was recorded as a duet but their label would only release it with Robert singing lead.

A shame because she would have had two of the biggest hits of that year had it been released and were she given a featuring credit on Higher Love.
