Why Does Amazon Music Have So Much Fake Versions of Hit Songs?
I asked Alexa to play 80s hits, and when "Against All Odds" came on, it clearly wasn't Phil Collins singing the song. Then when "Hello" came on, it was Lionel Richie singing the song, but it was obvious it wasn't the original version of the song.
Is it a licensing issue? Something with the recording companies owning the rights to the originals?
It reminds me of the 1970s when Ktel would sell those pop hits record compilations, but none of them contained the original songs.

If I have to play to Phil Collins' songs, I want to listen to anyone but Phil Collins singing them.

Toss Alexa into the nearest body of water. Problem solved!

I think it's licensing issues. I've had Alexa devices for years, and asking them to play certain songs is spinning a roulette wheel on what you will get. Although it has made me aware of interesting live versions sometimes.

Total guess here but might it have something to do with paying royalties, doesn't Amazon have to pay the artist a royalty to play their music? I suspect they might have to play a big artist larger royalties than what they pay to some nobody who did a cover.

I was trying to make up a playlist of TV theme songs on Spotify, and 90% of what I could find were horrible cover versions. Almost no originals. How I solved the problem? I went on YouTube, found videos that included the theme songs (originals!) and converted them to MP3s (free software does this) and then added them as "local files" to Spotify.
I'll bet you could do something similar for any kind of music, as long as there's a video available.
