DRAG! The Musical. Co-written by and starring Alaska. Saw it in preview last night

OK GAYS! RUN DON'T WALK to see the new musical that's taking NYC by st--

Actually I liked it. Energetic and entertaining - and just when I'd mentally got it sorted as a superficial vehicle for the performers to sass and preen and slay, there came a few moments that moved me. If you are a fan of past Drag Race winner Alaska Thunderfuck, you'll probably love this; she delivers a delightfully arch performance as Kitty. Her co-lead with impressive biceps, Nick Adams, is Alexis, her ex and nemesis. The supporting cast comes through with enough flair and zing to make it all work, and the ensemble includes past Drag Race contestants Jujubee, Luxx Noir London and Jan Sport.

The plot is flimsy -- there are two rival drag clubs the Fish Tank and the Cat House, and each owner (Kitty, Alexis) is in a financially precarious spot, oh dear, what will happen?! but so what, nobody goes to DRAG! The Musical expecting a masterfully layered storyline. This is like Kinky Boots meets the better moments on Drag Race. You're there to just bask in the flamboyance, laugh, applaud, and enjoy it on that level.

The show began with a warning about bright flashing lights and foul language... the bright flashing lights sure delivered and I can see how they could induce seizures. The language and vibe was typical for any drag show, and overall tame compared to the profane twistedness of Oh Mary.

Also at first we thought the show was set distinctly in 1980 or so, but as it progresses, cultural references are strewn all over the place and all over the decades. Some of the songs are duds but most of them hit their mark, well crafted and performed.

It's just under 2 hours with no intermission so pee first! All in all, a fun night out.

Musical theater is too cringey to comprehend.

About 122 gay men and a few het women, with zero sense of good performance art or any good sense, are the only ppl keeping it a thing.

When did drag completely take over our culture like this. I’m not hating but everything is drag this, drag that. Drag culture has completely become the face of mainstream gay culture.

I never miss a Alaska Thunderfuck musical.

Nick Adams is an unusual casting choice to play a drag queen. He is distractingly muscular. I mean really jacked.

I didn't hire him for you.
