Is there any hope of persuading MAGA voters to change sides in this election?

My cousin argued that’s it’s important to listen to right wing media in order to understand what MAGAs are thinking. He claim this is true so that you can persuade them to change their mind. My reply was there is changing anyone’s mind in this election. It’s tribal and the only hope is that more of us turn out.

BTW, he voted for Jill Stein in 2016, so I suspect for all his rhetoric about persuasion, he just enjoys anti-establishment conspiracy theories whereas they make me angry.

Drum roll please.

by Anonymousreply 1October 10, 2024 5:20 PM

Oh look. Another Trump thread.

by Anonymousreply 2October 10, 2024 5:20 PM

He also claims that there is no such thing as objective media, just media that promotes one side or the other.

by Anonymousreply 3October 10, 2024 5:21 PM

It’s a cult so the answer is baked right in.

Think about how hard it is to deprogram cultists.

by Anonymousreply 4October 10, 2024 5:32 PM

There are some people who voted for him the first time, but then Jan. 6th happened. A few decided then, he was a disgrace and won't vote for him again. There's also a small subset who claim they're abstaining from voting this time around, but the hard-core cultists are not going to be swayed.

Hope the youth turnout is high, they've the most to lose.

by Anonymousreply 5October 10, 2024 5:49 PM

Then why is he leading in most of the polls? You shouldn't get all your info from Datalounge and MSNBC.

by Anonymousreply 6October 10, 2024 5:52 PM

^he’s not. Self-own.

by Anonymousreply 7October 10, 2024 6:00 PM

It’s a death cult.

Did it help anyone in Jonestown when Congressman Leo Ryan went down there?

Nope. Because it was a cult, too.

by Anonymousreply 8October 10, 2024 6:21 PM

R3 - your cousin sounds like a "I'm smarter than everyone else" type.

That's a both sides do it type of argument - which is disingenuous and facile. Yes there are some perceived positions in reporting - but most REAL outlets try to be somewhat objective.

The right wing media has proven to be lies after lies with ZERO responsibility, retraction or with giving anything over to Democrat arguments.

by Anonymousreply 9October 10, 2024 6:26 PM

Yes, he thinks he’s a lot smarter when it comes to politics than he is. He’s a left-leaning (but not entirely) conspiracy theorist. He believes Hillary Clinton is the devil incarnate for reasons that he’s never justified beyond repeating Republican smears.

by Anonymousreply 10October 10, 2024 6:47 PM

I would say that at this point the percentage of MAGA voters who were going to wise up already have. The rest of them are likely hopelessly lost in their delusions.

by Anonymousreply 11October 10, 2024 6:58 PM

You'll have an easier time persuading them to stay home, " because everything is so corrupt!"

by Anonymousreply 12October 10, 2024 7:32 PM

No. Your time would be much better spent persuading a non-voter to get engaged and vote this year. There are millions of them.

by Anonymousreply 13October 10, 2024 7:48 PM

Honest question: what does death cult mean here? I like the sound of it. I always assumed it means a cult with a dark, nihilistic ideology that they want to realize, but it could also mean one that ends in death, like the People's Church. I like the former better as a condemnation of Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 14October 10, 2024 7:57 PM

OP, I'll give you a polite chuckle for the Vance option.

by Anonymousreply 15October 10, 2024 8:06 PM

I meant People's Temple above.

by Anonymousreply 16October 10, 2024 8:21 PM

[quote]My cousin argued that’s it’s important to listen to right wing media in order to understand what MAGAs are thinking.

Agreed, to a degree. I can't bring myself to watch Newsmax, but I check Fox News's website on occasion to see how they're framing a given issue.

[quote]He claim this is true so that you can persuade them to change their mind.

Total horseshit, but OTOH I'm a bit suspect that *you're* not total horseshit, meaning this is nothing but trolling – particularly this part: "He also claims that there is no such thing as objective media, just media that promotes one side or the other." This is a right-wing talking point designed to deflect from the fact that Fox goes far beyond neutral reporting, and also to sow distrust in the media generally. (You know, the media that publishes stories like "no, Trump sure as fuck did not win the 2020 election," not ones claiming "Trump was ROBBED by Biden & Harris!!!!")

And I'm sorry, but while the GOP has obviously gone off the deep end in recent years, it didn't really change the fact that roughly 20%-25% of America's adult reputation is strongly pro-D or pro-R, and the remainder is broadly independent. It's *those* voters – not dyed-in-the-wool partisans on either side – who decide every election. This is also the answer to the question of how the American public vacillates between such starkly different back-to-back presidencies: Reagan/Bush & Clinton. Bush & Obama. Obama & Trump. Trump & Biden.

I still agree that it's smart to know what the other side is thinking, I don't think there's any chance of convincing a legit MAGAt of anything whatsoever that's negative towards Trump. Even some of the biggest right-wing assholes who've said shit VAGUELY critical of him have mostly had to walk it back: even that fuckwad Kyle Rittenhouse had to do so after absurdly trying to argue that Trump "doesn't support the 2A to my satisfaction" or something similarly ridic.

MAGAts are flat-out brainwashed. Period AND full stop. Deprogramming them may be possible, but definitely not before Election Day. (Or even close.)

by Anonymousreply 17October 10, 2024 8:41 PM

R14, technically, it’s a cult that worships the dead or death. However, I used it in the way you describe- a bunch of nihilists wanting to destroy everything and everyone because their cult leader tells them to.

by Anonymousreply 18October 11, 2024 12:27 AM

l like it, R8 /18.

by Anonymousreply 19October 11, 2024 12:45 AM

Of course there's no chance. It's one thing to be a republican in general. To be a trumper means you are so low that you are barely functioning.

by Anonymousreply 20October 11, 2024 12:47 AM

I agree with almost everything you've written, R17, except this:

[quote]roughly 20%-25% of America's adult reputation is strongly pro-D or pro-R, and the remainder is broadly independent.

You've underestimated the size of the partisan split. For all of the pillorying and mocking of Mitt Romney in 2012, he was essentially correct when he said "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what." Now, again, he was incorrect in his underlying assumptions because it has nothing to do with paying taxes and government dependence, although those are the GOP boogeymen talking points. No, he was right and the country is basically split down the middle with only about 6% of the people deciding the direction of the country. And thanks to the arcane Electoral College, a winner-take-all scheme devised to hand undeserved power to rural, mostly Southern former slave states, it comes down to convincing a few people in 6 states to vote. Not convincing partisans to vote one way or the other, but simply to get people who don't usually vote to vote at all.

And that's where we are with this election cycle despite the fact that it has been going on for over two years. It's going to come down to the same group of people that pushed Shitler to victory in 2016, Biden in 2020, and I believe (and hope, for the sake of our futures) Kamala in 25 days. The good news is that Democrats are motivated, excited and aware of the stakes in this election; the bad news is that Republikkkans have fear and loathing on their side having resorted to negative emotion to propel them to victory time and again.

No.

I want to make a thread to ask regulars who frequent this site that are voting Trump, why. Because at this point I think it’s beyond Maga. They have to just hate the other side more.

by Anonymousreply 23October 11, 2024 4:33 PM

Tom at r22 is exactly right.

They’re that obnoxious fat kid in Jr High that did shit like eat boogers, stick their head in the toilet, light their farts on fire and other dumb, disgusting shit just to upset others and gross them out.

They don’t care if they get sick, end up in the hospital, end up dead. Any pain they suffer is “worth it” to them if they upset YOU.

I’m sure there’s a name for this, but idk what it is.
