Her wedding ring, R2
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 10, 2024 4:27 PM |
Will she be buried with her finger in her nose?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 10, 2024 4:29 PM |
Outlived Jackie by a full thirty years. Joan is the last one of that generation standing.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 10, 2024 4:29 PM |
Never a Kennedy, always a Skakel.

This will be a madcap funeral!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 10, 2024 4:34 PM |
Let's hope we don't see mommy's head mounted in RFK Jr's library in the coming months.
RIP Ethel. End of an era. Yes Joan, I know you're still here.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 10, 2024 4:35 PM |
Seriously, I know Joan is the youngest from that generation, but it’s surprising she’s still kicking after all that drinking.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 10, 2024 4:37 PM |
I had no idea who she was, so I had to look her up.
How in the hell did this woman live to be 96, after having ELEVEN kids??!!!!
That must have taken a lot out of her.
What an interesting and tragic life.
Both her parents were killed in a plane crash, and then her husband was assassinated.
And she was rich in her own right.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 10, 2024 4:38 PM |
Had this appeared when i started on Datalounge, this would have received a hundred posts by now.
I'm actually glad the Kennedys are being more and more forgotten.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 10, 2024 4:39 PM |
That's sad.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 10, 2024 4:40 PM |
Only 96? Amateur.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 10, 2024 4:42 PM |
[quote] Both her parents were killed in a plane crash, and then her husband was assassinated.
And her younger brother was killed in another plane crash eleven years after her parents. Just proves she's a true Kennedy.

Wow. Those had to be some truly tired flaps.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 10, 2024 4:46 PM |
She's been a professional widow since 1968.
You can be sure that the dress they bury her in will be returned to Saks by her a week after the funeral.

R20- I must say that is a bitchy comment

I hope her final words to her son was along the lines of “Get as far away as you can from that piece of shit con man.”

Will the Trumps crash the funeral?

Susan?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 10, 2024 4:54 PM |
Was she still of sound mind in recent years? She looked in some pictures like she had the blank-eyed dementia stare.

Is this the October surprise?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 10, 2024 4:56 PM |
I told her NOT to get vaccinated!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 10, 2024 5:05 PM |
Long life, strong lady, devoted wife/widow, questionable mothering skills. She really bought into the Kennedy myth and supported it with everything she had, now that she's gone that whole ethos is really at a final end.
The rest of the country won't be affected much but she was a real fixture on the central Cape (Cod). Hyannisport won't be the same in a sense, with her passing.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 10, 2024 5:07 PM |
I’ll be transporting the body to Central Park.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 10, 2024 5:14 PM |

Healthy peasant genes.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 10, 2024 5:22 PM |
What a life. For whatever her faults, she made being the Widow Kennedy her fulltime job and worked hard to memorialize Bobby. Her efforts are no small part of while his name is still on buildings & held in esteem today (despite what we actually about him)
It's kind of sad how her son smeared shit all over that legacy & a lifetime of work
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 10, 2024 5:24 PM |
Remember to put plastic bags over the kids' heads for when you chainsaw off the head and strap it to the roof of the minivan, Bobby!

by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 10, 2024 5:52 PM |
Betcha RFK, Jr. tries to bring a Trump. Not Donnie but maybe one of the kids?
Ethel was a horrible mother. Those kids ran wild and she would chase they around with a hairbrush and beat them, but she was very inconsistent. And she was a drunk. Her kids largely raised themselves. Jackie wouldn't allow her kids around them. John John called the cousins poster boys for bad behavior. Actually, the Shrivers were the family Jackie and the kids were closest to. She made an effort to be on good terms with Stephen Smith because he controlled the money. Jackie hated Peter and Pat Lawford because they helped JFK cheat on her.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 10, 2024 6:02 PM |
R59, I thought about it. I did. And then I realized Ethel would speak ill of me of the shoe were on the other foot. She was underhanded you know and a very jealous person because she want to claim her share of the spotlight.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | October 10, 2024 6:28 PM |
r50-
Joan is not Ethel, Joan is Joan Bennet Kennedy, the late Ted Kennedy's ex-wife who has had a rather lifelong battle with the drink, like so many other Kennedys. She was known as an educated, lovely woman dragged into a very difficult, troubled marriage and family which did not always support her, mostly because they were likely jealous.
Joan Bennett Kennedy only had three children, because she's not completely insane.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 10, 2024 6:31 PM |
Say what you will, the Kennedy boys had great hair.
But as an eldergay who campaigned for Bobby Kennedy in 1968 and got his heart broken, this is a day of sadness.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | October 10, 2024 6:36 PM |
As an 8-year-old living in Brooklyn, I had the opportunity to see Bobby Kennedy ride down the avenue in open car with Lyndon Johnson. I remember it clearly to this day. I’m with you R67 in that this is a day of sadness.

At this period of time, the majority of the black population in this area lived north and west from where this photo was taken, R84. Johnson and Kennedy did not exclude any segment of the population when they came through.

R104 she would’ve. Here she is in a Brokaw interview in 1988 saying she’d rather have another one instead of being interviewed at 2:30. Christ she was 60. The woman definitely had an obsession with being pregnant, and if Bobby would’ve lived, they probably would’ve have cranked out at least a half dozen more. She loved having them, but her parenting skills raising them overall were crap.

Surely she wasn’t celibate after Bobby died? Wasn’t she dating Andy Williams — or was she just a beard?
It’s also uncanny how she resembled the Kennedys — big horse teeth and all. Bobby could have done much better.

by Anonymous | reply 140 | October 11, 2024 5:38 AM |
She was very envious of Jackie, and used to make fun of her all the time to the other Kennedy sisters. She made up the phrase "Zhack-LEEN... rhymes with QUEEN!" to poke fun of the French way Jacqueline pronounced her own name (which Ethel and the sisters thought was pretentious), and Ethel also would gather the sisters around the bathroom door at the Hyannnisport Compound when Jackie was using it so they could make fun of the fact that she always ran water whens he used the toilet (so as to mask any embarrassing bathroom noises).

Years ago, I used to know this woman who worked at the Neiman Marcus or Saks (can't remember which) in Chevy Chase and she used to say that it was well known that Ethel would come in & shoplift and a day or so later, someone would bring back whatever she took. I have no idea if it's true, but it's a great story
by Anonymous | reply 144 | October 11, 2024 9:33 AM |
Yes, R141, I recall the story about Jackie saying how great it would be when we got back to the White House & Ethel said, “Who is we?”
by Anonymous | reply 145 | October 11, 2024 11:56 AM |
Knowing women, it's believable that the Kennedy sisters, especially a sister-in-law in the same position as Jackie in relation to them, made Jackie's life miserable and ganged-up on her Mean Girls style.
Jackie wasn't a Girl's Girl. In "Peggy Sue Got Married" the beatnik character says to Peggy when she strikes out alone to explore, "I thought chicks like you ran in packs", is an apt observation when applied to Jackie.
Jackie was never going to fit-in with other women, no matter who they were, and, quite frankly, I think it's clear she didn't want to.
Bobby Kennedy turned Ethel into a brood mare, apparently with Ethel's complete and eager consent. That type of attitude towards life strikes me as something that would repel Jackie. No wonder those two had issues.
Of course, if it's true, and I'll probably never make-up my mind on this, that Jackie and Bobby had a sexual relationship after JFK was assassinated, well, then Ethel's dislike of Jackie has some basis.
Jackie, of course, was far from perfect. Read how she treated poor William Manchester. I'm one of her biggest stans but even my opinion of her changed in a negative way after reading what a merciless bully she was to him, leaving him professionally and financially bereft.

She wasn’t a great lay. She was too transactional to go with RFK for fun or on a whim. It’s another unattributed fishwife’s tale from the 60s…much like the others rehashed here. The sword-smithing legends are overrated.
Although, we know from verified source sources, that the JFK stories from inside the WH (interns; the pool) are true—meh to almost all of the rest.

R159 and Joan’s parents were alcoholics.
She was beautiful and sometimes a bit outre, perhaps as a consequence of the drinking. She was photographed wearing a see-through blouse and leather skirt to a White House luncheon in honor of Imelda Marcos. Pat Nixon and Imelda look somewhere between shocked and amused in the background as Joan and her breasts were presented.

I grew up in a suburb with huge homes. It was a wasn’t suburb, but when they died off the Irish Catholics moved in with their herd of kids. Two families in the block had 12 kids! We were the smallest family with only 3 kids. There was always someone to play with!
My mom was disgusted by the Catholic parents. “They’re raising livestock, not kids.” And she wasn’t wrong. The older kids were forced to parent the younger kids because their moms were always pregnant. And many of those mothers stopped mothering as soon as she popped out the last kid. They were scary, angry and neglectful. And as an adult, I can’t blame them. The church forced them to become brood mares until their bodies gave out.
Ethel Kennedy was exactly like those women. I believe every story about her being a cold, nonmaternal, angry mother. I would have been terrified of her if I met her when I was a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | October 12, 2024 3:12 AM |
IMO, Ethel getting pregnant all the time was her way of proving that she and RFK were still fucking. (RFK had so many side women.)
by Anonymous | reply 196 | October 12, 2024 3:17 AM |
r195 it was so awful. Too many kids to raise properly, and the older kids were basically indentured servants with no lives of their own. The houses they lived in were packed, there was zero privacy. The mothers and fathers were overwhelmed and couldn't be good parents. That kind of upbringing did a lot of damage to people.

R195 is a dumb Pissspailer—the Church never forced children. It forbade birth control…two different things. Lots of Catholics couldn’t or didn’t have large families. They knew how to count days in a cycle, or they lied to their priest, or they were infertile or they just didn’t have P-V sex. In my own immediate family, relatives ran the spectrum: no natural children to 14 children with 1, 2 3, 4, 5, or 8 in between the extremes.

Last Thursday night, Ethel was resting comfortably recovering in an unnamed hospital in an unnamed city from a stroke suffered the previous week. Last Friday morning she was dead and over the weekend it was announced she died in Boston but not where. Last night the funeral was announced for 11am this morning in Hyannis as private and by invitation only. There was no wake. Presumably that means RFK Jr can’t invite Trump.

I met Ted in person when he was traveling to various cities conducting hearings in the early 90's. Maybe 90-91? Anyway he wore a back brace, he wore very thick soled therapeutic shoes, and looked like the Pillsbury Doughboy. He was very nice. He had a distinctive voice, and his staff asked us where he could go to mass. They were very young, and very devoted to him. He was only in town overnight but his advance team arrived 5 days head to make sure everything was as he wanted it. When they left, the next day there were hand written thank you notes for five of us local staffers who helped his people set things up. I still have mine somewhere.

Caroline has never believed in facial moisturizers or hair conditioners.
