On that list the best one is Carrie. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is just a slasher.

I am surprised "Halloween" didn't crack the top 10, but I do agree with their #1 pick. I have long considered "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" the best horror film ever made. I saw it when I was a kid on VHS and as a horror fan always enjoyed it, but I didn't fully appreciate all of its artistic choices until I saw it in 35mm about 10 years ago. Seeing it on the big screen with theater sound made it feel like a whole different beast. I was blown away. Everything from the cinematography to the sound design is just so well done, especially in light of how cheaply it was made. It's the closest thing I can think of in terms of a true nightmare being captured on film. I went and saw it in the theater again last week for its 50th anniversary, and it still delivered.

The Shining?

Clearly, they've never seen LucyMAME.

R1 slasher is a sub genre of horror. So yes, it’s horror.

Pretty good choice

“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is just a slasher”. Tell me you haven’t watched the movie without telling me you haven’t watched the movie.
The sequels and its 2003 remake were simply slashers. The original was very much a full rounded horror.

Rosemary’s Baby is not a horror flick; they just put it in for good taste. The Shining should be in its spot, which is the scariest movie of all time to me. Also Get Out should be in top 10.

Xanadu should be on that list.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 10, 2024 2:16 AM |
Rosemary’s Baby is and has always been considered a horror film.

The only one I've not seen is Audition, which is a Japanese movie; and I would argue that Saló is not a horror film though it has horrible things happening in it.
X and/or Pearl may start appearing on these lists once there's time and distance to appraise them.

Jaws is not a horror film neevah. This list is wack and attention seeking.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 10, 2024 2:25 AM |
R10 I feel you. It just reads more like a drama with horror elements. But that’s why it’s such an excellent film. It’s multi genre.

I would enjoy commenting on this thread but it has Defacto’s fecal odor all over it.
Suffice it to say that a top ten horror list with Jaws (???) but without Alien, The Shining or The Thing is a complete farce.

In what world is Jaws not horror?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 10, 2024 2:40 AM |
Jaws is an adventure movie with some scares in the first half to set up the stakes for the adventure that follows.
Duel is more of a horror movie than Jaws is, FFS.

Scream also deserves a spot in the top 10 for what it did for the cul-cha.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 10, 2024 2:50 AM |
Black Christmas should be on this list.
As should another movie that never gets the respect it truly deserves, When a Stranger Calls.

R16 it’s a horror. “With some scares”. Yes. Horror. Horror isn’t jump scares. Your age is fully exposed.

Madonna's complete filmography should be on the list.

The original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 10, 2024 3:10 AM |
The original Frankenstein should be higher on the list.

Oh, the irony! 🤣

Not a bad list. The Shining should be higher. Nice to see Event Horizon mentioned; that film gave me nightmares.

The Shining has always been unappreciated by critics and many movie buffs. The film was torn to shreds by critics when it came out

It’s too bad yours isn’t. Grow up already.

Using r19’s logic, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is a horror movie too.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 10, 2024 6:37 PM |
Did Gremlins make the list? Gremlins 1 used to be lowkey scary if though it was mostly funny.

I agree about"Scream." Not only was it some good old-fashioned jump scares, but it also started a renaissance. I assume that X was supposed to have that kind of impact, but I wasn't feeling it.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 10, 2024 7:07 PM |
"Spoorloos" ("The Vanishing" 1988) deserves a place among the Top Ten.
