Things your mother used…

…that you’ve never heard of since

My mom used to oily pads called Eye Q’s to remove eye Make up. And some type of gelatin supplement drink for her nails.

by Anonymousreply 198December 18, 2024 9:04 AM

Scotch Hair-Set Tape: a roll of pink cloth tape with pinked edges made for, yes, setting your hair. It was expensive for dimestore stuff so she would save all the little pieces and stick them to her makeup mirror for future use.

Knox gelatine, my mother used it as well.

My mom used a V bar, you’d squeeze it between your hands or thighs for a resistance workout. It was so loud. It was a precursor to the Suzanne Sommer’s Thigh Master.

by Anonymousreply 3October 9, 2024 5:09 AM

She had a lot of weird things.

She had this jewelry cleaning thing. You dumped your jewelry in it. There was some type of soapy liquid in it. You turned it on and it vibrated and voila: clean jewelry.

My mom used that too, r1. She used Dippity-do with it.

Some kind of tooth whitening powder that came in a white plastic jar maybe two inches high and six inches in diameter. It had a screw top lid also made of white plastic. It looked like Comet but smelled like mint.

The stuff may have predated yours truly by several years so it could've been a 1970s only product; Mom didn't need much of it to keep the nicotine stains at bay.

by Anonymousreply 23October 10, 2024 4:56 AM

Those plastic foldable rain bonnets that were kept in a purse. She would don that thing at the merest hint of a drop of rain while out running errands and it embarrassed me to no end.

R21 Dr Pepper flavored lipsmackers — brings back a very dear memory . It was 1975. I was working at the UCLA French dept in Haines Hall. I guess the story will give away I’m a woman.

Every morning i sat at my desk, drank coffee, and put on my makeup. I had this ginormous Dr Pepper lipsmacker — a lovely translucent reddish berry tone, it lasted forever .

When the chairman went to Paris he gave me a metro map which hangs on my wall today . Thanks for sparking this precious memory; I never imagined at the time I would remember it so fondly

And the ceramic cigarette holder. It was a white rectangular box. The lid had a raised design with an eagle. It was one of my jobs to fill the box. I guess it could hold roughly two packs of cigarettes.

by Anonymousreply 36October 10, 2024 8:08 AM

And then there were all the special food items we weren’t supposed to touch because she was “watching her figure.” Now it strikes me as an odd phrase; it was normal to me then.

The items? Melba toast, Tab, Fresca, Stella D’oro biscuits (they were hard and dry as fuck but not bad dunked in coffee)

My mother had a an exercise contraption that was a set of ropes with loops for your arms and feet and you attached it to a door and lay on your back while pulling your arms and legs back and forth.

Avon. She had a collection of the cute and gaudy ceramics the cosmetics came in but tossed them out unexpectedly. I hid a body lotion decanter shaped like corn on the cob, for no reason I can ascertain, but it was 'corny' so I had it in my bookcase for awhile until one of my roommates used it as a weapon against my other roommate in college.

Little rose-shaped guest soaps in three or four shades. We had two bathrooms in our house - one pink, one blue and each had a title plastic tray for the soaps. I thought they were incredibly glamorous and used them all the time.

Caress soap, used exclusively - on face and body, for face - after Ponds cold cream. Later she switched to Albolene. She had a big box of Cie dusting powder in her bathroom that lasted for years and years.

She loved General Foods International Coffees and Tasters Choice coffee crystals. She had a steam iron with a handmade cabinet for the ironing board that had a formica countertop, on wheels that rolled around. It had a little compartment inside for the starch or fabric sizing. I wish I still had it!

She used those little green tooth flosser things. Nectasweet saccharine tablets, everywhere in the house. Tons of office supplies. I never saw so many paperclips and folders, rubberbands, hole punchers, tape, you name it. This was longer after she had retired. Had a beige AT & T phone from the 80s with a super long cord and never replaced it.

I bought her Yves Rochernatural skincare--seaweed bath gel, apple toothpaste, arnica bruise cream--which she liked but she swore her undying allegiance to yenta Adrienne Arpel. Some of the Arpel things in the beginning were good but the line went to hell. Was surprised to see that Rocher is still around.

by Anonymousreply 123October 12, 2024 7:46 PM

Prell shampoo, witch hazel, Nivea cream which I still use.

When she was a child my grandma used to make her brush her hair with 200 strokes, which took forever.

After Eight mints and Russell Stover candies. Both still around, but pure nostalgia for me

by Anonymousreply 149October 15, 2024 6:41 PM

Fuller’s Earth (whatever that was) and witch hazel: a very primitive facial.

by Anonymousreply 150October 15, 2024 6:55 PM

After Eight mints and Viennetta ice cream were strictly for dinner parties and were the height of sophistication for me.

Fullers earth aka Multani Mitti is similar to bentonite and kaolin, common ingredients in clay face masks. FE is also used in kitty litter. Buy cosmetics grade from a place that sells cosmetic ingredients. FE can also refer to a mix of clays

by Anonymousreply 163October 16, 2024 4:50 AM

R163 Hey, I used those! I had a fancy thin brass one. No idea what became of it.

by Anonymousreply 164October 16, 2024 5:24 AM

I haven't smoked in a long time. I'd probably freak since everyone I've loved is dead now. I'm old.

I still have my roach clip and beautiful silver stash box, R163.

Heh heh.

I think we were more middle-middle class. My mom was pretty artistic, so I can see her liking those grapes.

by Anonymousreply 171October 16, 2024 5:58 PM

They were no class.

Cloth cocktail napkins. Some were embroidered with little olives, martini glasses and other drink-related designs.

Cotton handkerchiefs. My mother and aunts always spritzed them with perfume, thus scenting their purses as a bonus.

Those grapes, at least ones made of jade, still fetch high prices at estate sales.

R155, I haven’t heard of that remedy for a long time but it absolutely works, with any kind of vinegar. I had a dermatologist tell me that it’s because the vinegar is an astringent and opens the pores. I don’t know why that helps a sunburn but it definitely works, if you don’t mind smelling like a barrel of pickles.

by Anonymousreply 176October 16, 2024 10:31 PM

Cloth cocktail napkins are classy.

5 day deodorant pads I was perplexed but never asked my mother WHY??!?

I feared the truth .i couldn’t handle the truth

by Anonymousreply 178October 17, 2024 12:55 AM

Someone mentioned Mercurochrome or whatever that stuff was upthread. That’s the first time I ever let a cuss word fly in front of my mother. That stuff hurt like hell.

She had Jean Nate powder that must have lasted 10 years. I also remember her Gloria Vanderbilt perfume. She said the Amerige perfume my grandma used smelled like bug spray. Eau de Raid.

Mom had giant sunglasses and a skinny face. She wore them in lots of pictures. She looked like Mrs. X.

She was also a big believer in Head & Shoulders shampoo. That’s all we ever had. The smell of it takes me back to childhood.

Apparently when she worked at a doctor’s office, he gave all the gals speed to help them lose weight. Hope she enjoyed those black beauties.

by Anonymousreply 179October 17, 2024 2:26 AM

Yeah, mercurochrome was violently painful. 😖

Why did they use it? Did it kill bacteria especially well? I remember the plastic applicator with little squares at the end of the wand. To deliver more of the stuff to the wound, I guess.

Amarige? The Givenchy perfume?? That’s a beautiful fragrance.

by Anonymousreply 180October 17, 2024 2:44 AM

Mercurochrome was an over-the-counter substitute for iodine.

by Anonymousreply 181October 17, 2024 8:54 AM

I remember the Jean Nate commercials with the young woman, splashing it recklessly all over her body. Man, she must’ve reeked after that. Was that what they were suggesting women do?

by Anonymousreply 182October 17, 2024 2:04 PM

Jean Naté!

by Anonymousreply 183October 17, 2024 2:13 PM

R153 See also: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph!" (Often used while driving. It didn't count as taking the Lord's name in vain if followed by Mary and Joseph). Luden's cherry flavored cough drops. Pink frosty lipstick and tortoise shell sunglasses that were a sort of rounded cat eye. A silk scarf over the jet-black bouffant hairdo if it was windy or raining. The Carpenters on the radio in the wood paneled station wagon.

R94 My mom always used 5 day deodorant pads . I only appreciated the ambiguous insanity of it all when I got older. Did it mean you didn’t take a shower for five days ??

by Anonymousreply 196December 18, 2024 6:39 AM

R195 What a sweet comment about your mother …. I have a very old bottle ( empty for years ) of a fragrance called L’heure bleu. I can still catch the scent when I remove the cap.

I remember buying it for her in I. Magnin, Beverly Hills on Wilshire Blvd . The lady who sold it to me said ,” this was made back when people knew how to make perfume .” RIP mom. Miss you everyday
