My grandmother is in Naples, which is in the southwest of Florida on the edge of that zone. She only drove about 30 miles inland to her friend's house. I told her goodbye, because she is a religious person. Guess we'll see...

This is the storm Tampa Bay has feared forever. It could wipe out all of St Pete/Clearwater and everything else within miles of the water.

People on the beach seem unconcerned.

On a positive side, I think there will be plenty of jobs to reconstruct that area and I think buying a house will be much cheaper after this hurricane. Am I wrong? If so, please can you explain why?

That red zone should be avoided irrespective of any hurricanes.

I hope Milton doesn’t turn out to be a nothingburger.

The red area is marked as "avoid this area."
Question: How is that different from any other time of the year in any other year?

R5, while I understand your line of thinking, two things are at play here:
1) Insurance companies will not back up the construction of these new properties;
2) Insurance companies have pretty much deserted Florida, & the ones who haven’t, are raking homeowners through the coals financially.
Living in Florida has become untenable. Insurance companies collect massive amounts of data, including data that forecasts global warming via hurricanes, floods & fire zones.
Florida is a HUGE risk zone for insurers, which is why so many retirees are leaving the state in droves. Same thing is happening in specific areas in California, due to wildfires.

I wonder if the scientologists will stay. I'm not sure what their thoughts are on natural disasters.

The back end of the storm will be no fun for people who went Northeast (e.g., Savannah). and you probably needed to go some place like Memphis to be truly out of the way. When I look at the map of destinations, I'm just reminded how depressing most of them are.

R20 why are you posting that in multiple threads?
