The idea was to destroy the weapons depots which Hamas hides around schools and hospitals. Israel wasn't interested in killing anyone other than the leaders of Hamas and Hamas deliberately placed children and women in the sites to be bombed so idiots around the world would blame Israel for "having no qualms about targeting schools".
