The Thing.

It's not an awful picture. It's a masterpiece.

They Live is camp at its finest.
And Rowdy Roddy Piper wasn't bad to look at either.

They Live is so cringe
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 8, 2024 1:53 AM |

"Starman" is criminally underrated.
The scene where the alien morphs into Jeff Bridges features a shot of Bridges' beautiful smooth ass, back in the day when he had a gorgeous body.

I'd like to see the movie he made the night he killed Bob Crane.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 8, 2024 4:57 AM |
R20, I take that as a badge of honor from someone who thinks a piece of dreck like “They Live” is a masterpiece.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 8, 2024 6:00 AM |
Halloween for sure. He did so much with such a small budget and changed the horror genre in the process.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 8, 2024 6:10 AM |
Is Starman worth watching?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 8, 2024 6:38 PM |
Yes most definitely, r25.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 8, 2024 6:47 PM |
R2 I love They Live, The Thing, The Fog, Escape from New York, Halloween (of course), Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 8, 2024 6:49 PM |
R24, The Thing and Halloween are the biggest dilemma for determining which is Carpenter’s best.
As you say, he created a fabulous world and lore, and a very frightening story, with Halloween.
I have to give the edge to The Thing because it has all of the best elements of Halloween, but now with much better actors, a more elaborate set, much more terrifying effects (and most of them practical) and a more interesting story.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 8, 2024 6:56 PM |
My favorite is oddly Prince of Darkness, though it is hardly his best.
I would say Halloween.

R28 I think you’ve managed to change my mind. I’ve seen Halloween countless times but The Thing only a handful. I know I loved it but it’s been years since I’ve revisited. I’m going to rewatch this week.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 8, 2024 8:55 PM |
The Thing is a big lumbering mess. Take away the effects and the beard and there’s not much left.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 8, 2024 9:07 PM |
Shots fired.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 8, 2024 9:14 PM |
The Thing still holds up extremely well. The effects look great, despite being 42 years old. And the story is excellent.
Halloween largely invented the slasher genre and changed horror forever. But it feels very of its time, so I give the advantage to The Thing.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 8, 2024 9:21 PM |
The Fog is my favorite just for the amazing atmosphere that he created. I also think it's held up the best of all his movies.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 8, 2024 10:11 PM |
Prince of Darkness is good, pulpy fun. It's like a high-stakes Tales From the Crypt story.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 10, 2024 6:42 AM |
r8 sounds like a smash hit!

by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 16, 2024 1:40 AM |
The Thing followed by Big Trouble in Little China.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 16, 2024 2:08 AM |
So what are those guys doing at that base in The Thing? Research? Mining? Are they scientists? Do they work? Are they just watching the base for the winter?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 16, 2024 2:21 AM |
R35 If it was 'of its time' Zombie wouldn't have retold it in an ambiguous, although more modern context.
Not trying to accredit Rob Zombie with master filmmaker status; it's actually funny IMO when he went to Carpenter to get his 'blessing ' on the project, he expected John to be grateful the movie was being remade (so original), but he had a basic 'meh, and??' like response, so as to make Rob feel insulted.

It's a typical research station, r41. Some of the people have blue collar jobs and some are scientists/pilots/cooks

by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 16, 2024 9:44 PM |
I love The Thing with Kurt Russell. You can really see how the Alien Franchise borrowed from it.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 16, 2024 10:08 PM |
Alien was first!
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 16, 2024 10:10 PM |
The Thing, Starman - John Carpenter got them at their hottest, didn't he.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 16, 2024 10:17 PM |
Alien did the working class alien monster slasher movie first, and that first one has aged better than The Thing.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 16, 2024 10:44 PM |
The opening scene is so strange and, on reviewing it, so wonderfully creepy. Some parts later on i find less successful but it is a great movie.
Halloween is a classic but one i hardly ever revisit. It has been done to death.
The Fog is great movie as well, cresting a very tense mood with very little being shown.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 16, 2024 10:51 PM |
Adrienne Bigboobs's lighthouse scenes in The Fog are some of my favorite horror movie scenes ever.

Escape NYC a true classic and a peek at Americas future.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 17, 2024 4:16 PM |
“Escape NYC?” Such a great film you don’t remember the title?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 17, 2024 4:22 PM |
My favorite of his movies was “The Frog” but it’s one of those movies where the monster is implied like in the Blare Witch Projects.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 17, 2024 4:23 PM |
R56 the title is in the fucking heading of the thread. The informed smart members understood the shorthand. And seriously if you don’t know the title then what the fuck are you doing on this thread?
This kind of stupid chirping you do is such a waste of time and hardly interesting or funny.
