How did Beyoncé get so popular?
I have nothing against her and I even bought her first album. But she ain’t no Madonna or Michael Jackson. Hell, she ain’t even a Paula Abdul.
Single Ladies was lame. Girls Rule the World was even worse. Even more confusing is the fact that she’s trying to look white, which you’d think would piss off black people. How can she have this enduring level of fame when her songs sound like someone put 5 minutes of effort into them?

I feel the same way about Taylor Swift. I don't get it, but then I am not really in the demographics that they are marketed to. I just don't see what makes her so great. And I despise the Hive. Hate those cunts more than I dislike Bey.

I'll do something very un-DL: I think Cowboy Carter is a fantastic album -- I have listened to ir regularly start to finish, and there's some flab in there, but mostly excellent singing and songwriting...
And she's a big supporter of the gays, and she works hard, and...I don't get why the hate on DL for her?

I think her father, record label and Jay Z all made sure to squash whatever competition she might’ve had. She had a really good PR team. Destiny’s Child was obviously a set up to launch her solo career.
Once she began her solo career, there were dozens of female R&B singers who sounded exactly like her and their careers all mysteriously faded away. Rihanna is somehow the only one who survived.
She remained on top until about 2016. I don’t think she is as popular now as she used to be.

Those people are from a different generation. Time marches forward. It's natural and it happens.
Beyonce is an elder millennial and that generation grew up listening to her.
She made music you can dance to when she was younger, she can sing well, she dances well enough, she puts on an amazing show and stays out of nearly everything. That woman is media trained within an inch of her life. I have no idea how she really feels about anything so there's no reason to ever truly hate her for something she said.
However, the real kicker is, she topped and mostly outlasted all of her contemporaries as a performer.
This commercial is like a time capsule.

R38, dear. That's not what I said.
I said Elder Millennials grew up listening to her and NOT that they didn't listen to the other people.
You may not have actively been seeking out her music, but Destiny's Child was playing everywhere, in "malls" and "shopping outlets," on television and on the radio.
There's a difference between being around (and aware) at the middle or end of someone's career and being around for its entirety. Beyonce came along at the right time to be exposed to a whole bunch of other people through technology that eventually altered the industry forever.

I’m a little confused by her popularity too. Not why people like her but why she’s considered so big. Crazy in Love and Single Ladies were everywhere back in the day. But I feel like her most recent albums haven’t generated anything that’s been a massive single. For all the media hype that Lemonade got, I’m not sure I could tell you a single song from that album.

She's fine. But the fact she's seen as some goddess has never made sense. I find her the fourth most interesting pop star from her peak era:
I always liked Rihanna's singles more, Gaga's albums more and Adele's voice more.
(I totally agree with others RE Swift. I get why she has a career. I don't get why she's the biggest thing since MJ fifteen years into her career. It just never happens that way.)

Who else but the Queen could pull this off. That’s why she is so mafuckin respected. Beyoncé wears the same blonde weaves that every black chica, Latina, hell Italian-American white girls in the industry have worn for the past 60 years. She is just a beautiful bitch so people say she tryna be white. I don’t think Michele Obama would want to be Beyoncé if she could be anyone else in the world if she thought the Queen was self hating.

When white girls tan and have their makeup artist contour their face so it looks like they have lips are they tryna be black? Ironically the Queen use to routinely wear bronze tanner because her skin is pale during the non summer months, especially since she no longer lived in Texas. She used to be hella self conscious about it.

Beyoncé has even had rhinoplasty. I think Kelly Rowland did too. The weaves and lacefront wigs are a bit OTT but an entertainer’s hair takes a beating so in that regard it makes sense to wear them.

R54 The reason why the Queen is seen as a Goddess is because she had an entire decade of critically acclaimed commercially successful albums without really being a staple on pop radio. Then she is elusive, won’t give interviews, doesn’t tweet. She only posts pictures on Instagram and follows NO ONE, not even her own husband. Over 250 million followers and she follows no one else. That’s why she is a goddess.

Work ethic, race, and confidence. Her contemporaries are Britney, Christina, JLo, P!nk, Usher, and others I can't remember. But, unlike the rest, save for P!nk, she never faltered on her work ethic and maintained a clean public image. You will never catch Beyonce being lazy at a concert. You will never catch Beyonce talking negatively about people. You will never catch Beyonce doing cheap Christmas albums.
She's like a well oiled machine that's stood the test of time, compared to her peers. It's consistency at play. Also, one of the few still doing choreography. A lost art in pop. If Beyonce was a white woman, DL would have no problems understanding how she's become so big. The fact that she can be compared to a juggernaut like Swift, whose a decade her junior, shows that Beyonce's career instincts were more right than wrong.
We don't have to like her sound or all of her songs, but she gives even passive fans enough content to be palpable to the masses. I also love that she at times displays a pro-black message despite how controversial it can be in America.
But Beyonce simply made it to the top by hard work. Simple.

r65 and people need to remember that she's been in the game since the late 90s. No one has had such a clean and consistent career for so long. Beyonce stays in her lane. Releases her music, goes on tour, still dances and sings (in heels), then goes about her life. Literally the perfect type of pop star. The fact that she started when I was 8 years old, and is still that girl, speaks volumes!
