Coco peruses through cheap shit, suffer heat stroke and buys protein bars

Never been to an ALDI…is this store like the Walmarts?

HI COCO!

by Anonymousreply 2October 7, 2024 2:28 AM

Silly, harmless fun!

by Anonymousreply 3October 7, 2024 2:36 AM

I fucking love Aldi! Limited selection, but everything is pretty good. It's all Aldi brand or a foreign item, like some candy from scandanavia or paper towels from Mexico with some cutesy design. Stuff you just wanna GRAB. Their Maple Leaf Cookies are a seasonal favorite. No national brands. Kinda weird to think about, but that's part of the draw; you're not overwhelmed. If you want some jam at Aldi, your options might be four flavors of the Aldi Brand (Berryhill Farms?) and then a specialty jar of blackcurrant jam from France in a cute jar for 4.99, in their must-browse specialty aisle.

Produce is pretty good weirdly and always fresh, at least at my Aldi. Very clean stores generally.

by Anonymousreply 4October 7, 2024 2:38 AM

r4 It's nothing like Walmart. The stores are about the size of a Trader Joe's--much smaller than even a conventional supermarket, much less Walmart.

by Anonymousreply 5October 7, 2024 3:04 AM

[quote]No national brands.

Not true. They have some major national brands like Coke, Oreos, Cheerios, etc. But the vast majority of stuff is one of their store brands.

The produce is usually not bad, but there's never a huge selection and they're often out of things. But great buys on a lot of stuff -- they had raspberries for 99 cents a few times recently, and blackberries for not much more. Strawberries were always well-priced too. But don't go in there expecting to find everything on your shopping list. However as has been mentioned, there's always lots of fun stuff in the "Aldi Finds" aisle(s) -- food and non-food.

by Anonymousreply 6October 7, 2024 3:07 AM

[quote]there's always lots of fun stuff in the "Aldi Finds" aisle(s) -- food and non-food.

They had a chainsaw last week.

by Anonymousreply 7October 7, 2024 3:10 AM

Every time I hear Coco Peru's voice I think it's Linda from "Bob's Burgers."

by Anonymousreply 8October 7, 2024 3:10 AM

ADORE Coco

by Anonymousreply 9October 7, 2024 3:14 AM

I feel like her, I forget my glasses too and can’t read shit either in the grocery store

by Anonymousreply 10October 7, 2024 3:16 AM

I honestly think that R4 IS coco!

by Anonymousreply 11October 7, 2024 3:18 AM

[quote] Never been to an ALDI…is this store like the Walmarts?

No. Where on Earth to you live there? Aldi is worldwide.

by Anonymousreply 12October 7, 2024 3:43 AM

r12 "Where on Earth to you live there?"

Ok

by Anonymousreply 13October 7, 2024 3:46 AM

R12 I live there on the west coast of the United States.

No Aldi stores have opened here there.

by Anonymousreply 14October 7, 2024 4:07 AM

R14 Bullshit, I live on the West Coast and they're everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 15October 7, 2024 4:29 AM

Where exactly r15?

Because there’s not a single Aldi in the state that I live in.

by Anonymousreply 16October 7, 2024 5:07 AM

Huh. I had no idea until now that there are, in fact, no Aldi locations in either Oregon or Washington. Wonder why?

by Anonymousreply 17October 7, 2024 5:13 AM

[quote] Why are there no Aldi stores in the Pacific Northwest and other western states?

[quote] Is there an agreement between the two sides of the Albrecht family? These are some of the states that have no Aldi stores:

Excuse me….

R15 IS A FUCKING MORON WHO HAS LEFT THE FLYOVER HELL HOLE THAT HE WAS BORN IN

by Anonymousreply 19October 7, 2024 5:19 AM

Coco is wise. Those fucking kids and their videos-get some headphones so the rest of us don't have to hear it.

by Anonymousreply 20October 7, 2024 5:29 AM

I have to laugh at the Halloween pajamas for the whole family.

You come out wearing this - you're not getting laid.

by Anonymousreply 21October 7, 2024 5:38 AM

That was actually a great video. Non stop jokes & quips.

by Anonymousreply 22October 7, 2024 5:44 AM

There are six Aldi's within 10 miles of me, according to Google. The 6th opened recently, and is .4 miles, almost in my backyard.

It's nice. The cheese selections are great. Vegetables, both fresh and canned, are limited (I'm spoiled by an amazing farm market on the same street). Snacks, cookies, crackers are a decent variety. What actually looks awesome in this store is the salmon, but I'm a vegetarian, so....

I've read that currently the Big Bargains are a few Le Creuset knock-offs for much less. I have enough LC, though.

What bugs me is the weird quarter business with the carts.

by Anonymousreply 23October 7, 2024 5:54 AM

I'm an Instacart shopper and it weirds me out how ppl have me shopping at Jewel, Marianos or Pete's Market and the same produce is half the price at Aldi!

by Anonymousreply 24October 7, 2024 6:24 AM

Shops online 3 weeks ago.

by Anonymousreply 26October 7, 2024 7:02 AM

r15's default is BULLSHIT, I CANNOT BE WRONG instead of 'hm, let me check'

Then, oh, yeh, I'm wrong again.

by Anonymousreply 27October 7, 2024 12:13 PM

There are many ALDIs in Southern California. It’s my favorite grocery store. Unlike walmart the produce quality is decent, their store brand has much tastier selections, and it’s even cheaper overall. The ALDI finds section has amazing cheap stuff for pets and some of the snacks that rotate in and out of that section are great. I like the feta cheese kettle chips and dopplekeks especially.

by Anonymousreply 28October 7, 2024 12:54 PM

I'm in NYC. I know there are Aldi's in the Bronx and Long Island but not in Manhattan. We have Trader Joe's, it's sister company instead.

by Anonymousreply 29October 7, 2024 1:10 PM

I actually love the apple corer I picked up from Aldi. I have the pineapple corer too.

by Anonymousreply 30October 7, 2024 1:25 PM

That BOTHERS me

by Anonymousreply 31October 7, 2024 1:30 PM

I have the pineapple corer and it’s cool, but I never use it. It’s faster for me just to prepare the pineapple with a knife.

And that’s why I don’t buy gadgets!

by Anonymousreply 32October 7, 2024 2:38 PM

R27 Change your bloody tampon, Mary.

by Anonymousreply 33October 7, 2024 3:59 PM

I agree about the kid's tablet but she is also creating content in a grocery store. I don't want any part of THAT either. I did chuckle at her video though.

by Anonymousreply 34October 7, 2024 4:27 PM

I want Trader Joe's, we have Aldi and Whole Paycheck, we need Trader Joe's, we are deprived.

by Anonymousreply 35October 7, 2024 4:35 PM

There aren't any Aldis in Northern Calif. yet, but I'm sure they're coming.

The Albrecht brother split up the world. Aldi Nord (owns Trader Joe's) doesn't have the rights to Aldi in the U.S. All the U.S. Aldis are owned by Aldi Sud.

by Anonymousreply 36October 7, 2024 4:41 PM

I could also eat an entire jar of blue cheese stuffed olives. The Costco sized container. 😯

by Anonymousreply 37October 7, 2024 6:52 PM

ew

by Anonymousreply 38October 7, 2024 7:11 PM

R24 Are you in Chicago? If so, switch to doordash. They have Aldi.

by Anonymousreply 39October 7, 2024 7:25 PM

R36 My understanding is that Aldi and Trader Joes have an agreement that they can't be in the same vicinities.

by Anonymousreply 40October 7, 2024 7:32 PM

R40 What constitutes a vicinity? In Chicago, we have Trader Joe's and Aldis down the street from one another.

by Anonymousreply 41October 7, 2024 7:37 PM

I'm not seeing any in Los Angeles.

by Anonymousreply 42October 7, 2024 7:41 PM

R41 That was my understanding of how Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud agreed on expanding and operating in the US. If there are both existing down the street from each other in Chicago, then perhaps the original demarcation agreement of the businesses don't apply everywhere or even any more.

by Anonymousreply 43October 7, 2024 7:45 PM

Coco is the best

by Anonymousreply 44October 7, 2024 7:51 PM

She's at my Aldi!

by Anonymousreply 45October 7, 2024 8:04 PM

Does America also have LIDL?

ALDI and LIDL are pretty much identical in Britain - European produce and random purchases in the middle aisle, like inflatable Princess castles, bidets, electric skateboards or LGBTI+ rainbow wellington boots

by Anonymousreply 46October 7, 2024 8:13 PM

I’ve been to Lidl in Germany

by Anonymousreply 47October 7, 2024 8:15 PM

[quote]She's at my Aldi!

Which one is it, r45?

by Anonymousreply 48October 7, 2024 8:17 PM

The BEST one

by Anonymousreply 49October 7, 2024 8:53 PM

I love the shopping videos. They are comforting and sometimes you just need comfort

by Anonymousreply 50October 7, 2024 8:55 PM

I agree

by Anonymousreply 51October 7, 2024 9:23 PM

their salsa is pretty good but the best deal on that is definitely costco

by Anonymousreply 52October 7, 2024 9:46 PM

Lidl hasn't made it out of the mid-Atlantic region.

by Anonymousreply 53October 7, 2024 10:16 PM

r42 Then you're not looking very hard.

by Anonymousreply 54October 7, 2024 10:17 PM

[quote]My understanding is that Aldi and Trader Joes have an agreement that they can't be in the same vicinities.

Not true at all. My neighboring town, which has less than 35K in population has both an Aldi and a TJ. And the Aldi is literally around the corner from Trader Joe's' U..S. headquarters.

by Anonymousreply 55October 7, 2024 10:19 PM

I'm not seeing anything in the city, r54. Thank you for your help though.

by Anonymousreply 56October 7, 2024 10:24 PM

I usually love Coco shopping vids but this was a swing and a miss for me. Muffled audio and jumbled video.

by Anonymousreply 57October 7, 2024 10:27 PM

[quote] My understanding is that Aldi and Trader Joes have an agreement that they can't be in the same vicinities.

Nope. I live near an Aldi location that is directly adjacent to a Trader Joe's.

Maybe the companies don't want to be in the same plaza/building (they ARE similar in size/scope) but there are instances where they are near each other - have seen it in other towns too.

by Anonymousreply 58October 7, 2024 10:28 PM

We have an Aldi in Charlottesville, VA as well as a Trader Joe's which arrived in 2012. I shopped Aldi on Friday - somewhat limited selections but they have the BEST fresh green beans - better than Wegmans. I've been going there for about a year - always different stuff, much of which comes from private label or European brands. Coco Peru is great - love her YT videos and the latest outing to Aldi was a treat.

We did have a Lidl here but it closed down about 2 years ago - only went a few times. Different stuff than Aldi but worth going there. Just about every type of retail shopping available in C'ville, almost like Northern Virginia but w/o the horrible traffic although it can get kinda hairy on weekends.

by Anonymousreply 59October 7, 2024 10:28 PM

[quote]I'm not seeing anything in the city, [R54]. Thank you for your help though.

Northridge, Panorama City, and West Hills are all in the City of Los Angeles. And there are dozens more in LA and Orange counties.

I was hoping Lidl would have become as widespread as Aldi but apparently they really mishandled their expansion into America.

by Anonymousreply 61October 7, 2024 10:43 PM

Thank you, r60, I didn't realize they were neighborhoods.

by Anonymousreply 62October 7, 2024 10:44 PM

By the way, r60, I'm really unfamiliar with the valley.

by Anonymousreply 63October 7, 2024 10:46 PM

I hate Aldi and Lidl because they are all over Europe and they have driven out most of the mom and pop stores and taken away a lot of local character. The 'Lidlification' is sad. It doesn't matter so much here as we're long dominated by chains but they're nothing special. My friend in Orlando says they're his cheapest option. They're not cheaper where I am.

by Anonymousreply 64October 7, 2024 10:54 PM

I finally went to one here in my town. Meh. I feel...underwhelmed. They has a few good options, but nothing to go out of my way for.

by Anonymousreply 65October 7, 2024 10:59 PM

The Aldi near me is a junk shop - I went once and it was nasty

by Anonymousreply 66October 7, 2024 11:04 PM

[quote]The Aldi near me is a junk shop - I went once and it was nasty

So, r66, you *didn't* find a treasure?

by Anonymousreply 67October 7, 2024 11:05 PM

Aldi and Lidl have aisles of non food crap items. Most of it is indeed crap junk but there are treasures sometimes.

Their spring mattresses are dirt cheap and really good. You will not sweat! But you can't be a fat whore.. Perfect for day beds and guest bedrooms.

In Switzerland they make a point to sell some swiss made items. Traditional peasant fabric you can't find anywhere. One year they sold swiss made Lederhosen of excellent quality, for very low prices.

Dairy is from your country. If that's the USA, well, it sucks to be you. If that is Switzerland, it's cheaper than swiss dairy products in other swiss supermarkets.

Same with meat - they will sell local meat. In Switzerland, that is very good meat. Swiss meat, not the industrial European meat that gets shipped around Europe to see at the lowest prices to the poorer consumers. Or the tightwads.

Certain produce is a NO. Any kind of produce that can spoil in a day or two - avoid! It will spoil in your home and quickly.

German chocolate is good. But nothing special really. German bakery products are the crap ones filled with crap oils and industrial ingredients. Do not buy.

by Anonymousreply 68October 7, 2024 11:14 PM

The one thing that absolutely sucks at Aldi is bread. But it sucks almost everywhere in the United States. You would think that a German owned company would do better with bread.

by Anonymousreply 69October 7, 2024 11:17 PM

Yeah, I agree about the bread. The flatbreads though are great for pizzas though.

by Anonymousreply 70October 7, 2024 11:26 PM

I'd avoid leafy produce from any budget kind of place - Aldi, Grocery Outlet, Food4Less, etc.

But we've had berries, squash and bananas from Aldi that were just fine. If anything the bananas sometimes take forEVER to become ripe.

I like that they have some gluten free crackers, I usually get some dairy there (whipped cream, light butter) and almond milk. And I like the cooler - there's some consistent things I get there (turmeric drink, cheese).

Need to go back and get some of the Deutsche Kuche stuff.

by Anonymousreply 71October 7, 2024 11:26 PM

Not a fan of their guacamole. They always have a great selection of affordable cheeses. Eggplant cutlets are great too.

by Anonymousreply 72October 7, 2024 11:39 PM

I'm in San Diego and the Aldis near me vary widely - some are very neat and clean and orderly and some are a bit of a wreck. Also, the stores always seem empty. Trader Joes, on the other hand, is always packed these days, whenever I go, no matter what store.

by Anonymousreply 73October 7, 2024 11:42 PM

r55 "literally"

by Anonymousreply 74October 7, 2024 11:50 PM

R48 It's the one on Victory Blvd in Burbank.

by Anonymousreply 75October 8, 2024 12:39 AM

[quote] I'd avoid leafy produce from any budget kind of place - Aldi, Grocery Outlet, Food4Less, etc.

Why?

by Anonymousreply 76October 8, 2024 12:39 AM

I'd assume quick spoilage, r76.

by Anonymousreply 77October 8, 2024 12:42 AM

Thank you, r75.

by Anonymousreply 78October 8, 2024 12:43 AM

Yes, quick spoilage, duh.

Any discount place always has that issue with leafy produce. Rarely is that not the case.

I loved Woodmans when I lived in the Midwest but again, we just wouldn't ever get the leafy stuff there, unless you were cutting it up the same day. And sometimes not even then.

by Anonymousreply 79October 8, 2024 12:47 AM

I adore Coco, who always reminds me of the result of a union between Anne Meara and Little Edie, and her shopping videos. 💗

by Anonymousreply 80October 8, 2024 1:01 AM

“That color does not exist in nature…?!”

by Anonymousreply 81October 8, 2024 1:05 AM

R39, yeah I'm in Chicago. I barely started using Doordash and I got one shop and deliver and I'm very encouraged because they paid me $11 to deliver one $4 towel! MCKinley Target to Bridgeport.....I'm liking Doordash. It's so much busier than Instacart.

by Anonymousreply 82October 8, 2024 1:46 AM

COOC PERU!

by Anonymousreply 83October 8, 2024 3:18 AM

Aldi's basic bagged green salad (the cheap one--iceberg, carrots, etc.) is often on sale for around $1.29 or so and they last for several weeks (they have an expiration date on them. I buy those a lot and eat the entire bag (doctored up with some meat or garbanzo beans, green onions, etc. I don't eat tomatoes.)

by Anonymousreply 84October 8, 2024 3:37 AM

COCO PERU loves Aldi

by Anonymousreply 85October 8, 2024 4:27 AM

It still makes me sad that we'll never see a Girls Will Be Girls sequel.

by Anonymousreply 86October 8, 2024 4:57 AM

R86 - Yes, that is a heartbreaker. I have the DVD of 'Girls Will Be Girls' from 2003 (over 20 years ago!) so I doubt a followup sequel would occur. Evie Harris, Varla and Coco put on a show for the ages along with some Special Features that make this a must see and is streaming out there on the ether!

by Anonymousreply 87October 8, 2024 11:25 AM

I’m crying as i type this

by Anonymousreply 88October 8, 2024 1:31 PM

R87 Some parts of a sequel were filmed, and thousands were donated via Kickstarter or the like to make it happen, but the director/writer is the biggest mess that ever messed, and apparently flipped his wig and is incapable of finishing it.

To be fair, he did have a bout of cancer a few years after, but he's apparently in remission. I just think he lost his shit, sadly, or what was filmed wasn't worth a release.

by Anonymousreply 89October 8, 2024 2:52 PM

R89 Coco???

by Anonymousreply 90October 8, 2024 3:35 PM

it's possible, she's a lady of leisure

by Anonymousreply 91October 8, 2024 3:41 PM

R90 LOL, no.

But I was one of the donors, and it became clear after a few years that a sequel ain't happening.

by Anonymousreply 92October 8, 2024 4:01 PM

R89 - That's interesting. At least we have Coco on YT with her periodic presentations that are worth the wait.

On a side note, there was a similar type movie that came out the same years as GWBG - Die, Mommie Die - w/Charles Busch. I bought the DVD and still have it (I think). It was kinda odd but I gravitate towards off beat efforts. I believe it's available to stream/purchase.

by Anonymousreply 93October 8, 2024 5:40 PM

R-89 - I found DMD on YT - free to watch or download if you have 4K downloader app. Of course this is available to all interested parties.

by Anonymousreply 98October 8, 2024 9:17 PM

He was perfectly cast in that wonderful film.

by Anonymousreply 99October 8, 2024 11:50 PM

[quote]Some parts of a sequel were filmed, and thousands were donated via Kickstarter or the like to make it happen, but the director/writer is the biggest mess that ever messed, and apparently flipped his wig and is incapable of finishing it.

A few years ago, I asked Jeffery (Varla Jean) what was up with the Girls Will Be Girls sequel and he just rolled his eyes and said "If you find out, tell ME."

He confirmed that he and the other two shot and wrapped the whole thing, not just parts. Apparently the director used Kickstarter to raise post-production costs for SFX, collected the money, and seemed to drop the project.

by Anonymousreply 100October 10, 2024 4:00 AM

R100, you need to start an urban legend to get it into print - say, audio of Charles Kuralt being a verbal top imbedded in the film.

by Anonymousreply 101October 10, 2024 4:22 AM

I have to laugh at her annoyance at the car navigator.

by Anonymousreply 102October 10, 2024 4:32 AM

R100 I think part of the problem, IIRC, is that Richard Day - the messy director - did Kickstarter to raise money for the entire film's budget, and part of that was promising that various people who donated could do a scene in the movie, which I assume those donors would film themselves and then those scenes would be incorporated into the movie.

Which, even on paper, sounds like it would be next to impossible to implement.

Day stopped posting under his own name on Twitter because I think he was tired of people asking him about GWBG2 so for a while he was posting under the Evie Harris Twitter handle.
