Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone, may be dead to me
by Anonymous | reply 366 | October 13, 2024 4:09 AM |
I thought he’d already died? He’s the one that wrote a book about being Madonna’s brother, right?
Did another brother of hers die a couple of years ago?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 6, 2024 12:32 AM |
Christopher is the one who wrote the book. Her brother Anthony died in early 2023.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 6, 2024 12:37 AM |
Anthony was the homeless one?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 6, 2024 12:38 AM |
Yes.

Confirmed by multiple sources now.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 6, 2024 12:40 AM |
Watch her post nothing about it. She didn’t even post about her stepmother. Nothing but photos of her fake ass. lol. Christopher did do her dirty though. Her dad is on his deathbed now. Her dad has cancer. Christopher was rumored to have had cancer too. She’s going to really go off the rails as it becomes more and more apparent that she only has so many years left.

Oh, God. Prepare for an incoming song with lyrics like, "You were big when I was small/I used to wish I was so tall/We grew up without a mother/Just you and me, sister and brother" set to a four-on-the-floor beat.

I always felt like she treated Joan like shit. You're a grown woman now; you were admittedly a pain in the ass kid then. Grow the fuck up, Madonna. She was a hero for no other reason than that she was probably one of the few to put you in your place, thus your resentment of her.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 6, 2024 12:46 AM |
He was 63. I actually liked his book. We all know about Madonna’s mental problems. He revealed a lot about her histrionics. That being said, he did have affection for her. Christopher turning into a MAGA freak was really sad. He even praised that fat cunt who wouldn’t give marriage licenses to gay couples.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 6, 2024 12:46 AM |
R14, she seemingly reconciled with her even saying that Joan was trying when they were kids and she was still upset over her mother’s death. She was physically abusive to Madonna though.

I read the brother's book. As much as I don't like Madonna, I could see that she did try to help him. She employed him. He got too much into drugs and wanted more and more money for whatever he was doing (designer, helping Madonna, etc.). His sense of self became inflated because he was Madonna's brother.

I read his memoir and he kept it clean. Madonna was enraged to discover her brother charged a markup for the furnishings purchased for her homes. He did not go too far in regards to letting his sister have it. He admitted to a substance abuse issue, but was quick to point out he wasn't the only one in his sister's circle using.
He fell out with his sister when she married her second husband, a homophobe who openly disparaged him.

R66, Madonna is closest to sister Melanie, who was a publicist for Brian Eno's Opal Records and is married to singer-songwriter Joe Henry. She is now an artist dealing mostly in mixed media textiles and lives in Maine.

Paula tried to model in the 80s and she seemed very resentful of Madonna at the time.
As someone said, Madonna was close to Melanie and Christopher but Christopher stabbed her in the back.
There’s so many of them and some are older and some are younger and I think it’s common for big families not to all interact with each other.
Sad Christopher has died because he’s such a staple if you’re a Madonna fan.
I liked what he had to say about “Confessions on a Dance Floor”. That the imagery of the album was inspired by the gay nightclub he took Madonna to in Detroit when they were young.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | October 6, 2024 4:18 AM |
r73 Jennifer Ciccone is Madonna's younger half-sister, not stepsister. They share the same father. There is also a half-brother named Mario (?) I believe. Both were born to her late stepmother, Joan.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 6, 2024 4:25 AM |
R76, Paula was resentful because Madonna went to New York to be a dancer, while Paula was the one who aspired to be a singer / model / actress. So when Madonna switched gears, went into music and became a superstar, Paula hated that her sister was leading the life she (Paula) had planned for herself.

R78 - the difference between Madonna and Paula is that Madonna has "it" (and in massive amounts).

No way R87. Paula was too hard and angular looking and she had no charisma. Madonna was softer and more feminine and had a better shaped face (heart shaped). Madonna also knew exactly how to make the most of what she had. Madonna also commanded attention and the camera loved her. It's an interesting example of how genetics fall perfectly into place for some siblings and not for others.

[quote] They have a thing called a 'Public Library' now.
And as a former library employee, here's how this works:
About every two years, they are required (by board members) to do a deep inventory of their stacks for financial reasons. This means they have to scan each book in their collection and see how many times it's been checked out in the past two years, to determine it's popularity. If the book has not been checked out in the past two years, it gets 'flagged'. In another two years, if it still has not gotten checked out it gets pulled from the stacks to make room for newer inventory. If the flagged book has gotten checked out over the next two years, it could still be on 'the chopping block' - depending on how many times it was checked out in it's rebound period (under 5 times, it's usually removed). I'm betting 'Hillbilly Elegy' was probably in its flagged stage by now, but has rebounded nicely over the summer and won't be facing the chopping block anytime soon.
There are some factors which come into play:
How popular the author is (for example, Stephen King books are never removed from shelves, no matter how old the title nor how frequently old titles circulate). King stays on the shelves, period. I'm sure this is true for just about every US library. Sue Grafton is another author - her books stay on the shelves.
Classics are exempt - Harper Lee's 'To Kill A Mockingbird' will always stay on the shelves. However the 'newly discovered' 'Go Set A Watchman' (written at the same time by Lee, but never published back then) which was released in 2015 (and was a failure) has probably already been pulled by most libraries.
Physical size of the library - NYPL probably keeps books much longer than libraries in smaller districts with limited physical space.
Condition of the book - if it's in poor condition and not worth repairing, it gets tossed. Chances are if the book is more than a few years old, they won't be buying a replacement copy. (Again, an exception would be 'Hillbilly Elegy' these days - libraries are probably replacing their copies if they have been tossed).
So Ciccone's book was a best seller when it came out in 2008. I have a feeling it dropped off in popularity by 2010, and was removed from most shelves to make room for others by 2015-16. If you go to your library to find it, it may take a while for them to locate a copy from another library and check it out to you.
What do libraries do with these past 'best sellers' ? Usually they hold a 'book sale' every quarter to raise money for the library and sell these books for about a $1. If they don't move, they're tossed in their 'free books' pile.

I got the impression Christopher Ciccone's memoir was deeply edited. There's dirt but not dirt dirt.
He did explain the memorable sequence in Madonna's Truth or Dare that interested me because I didn't understand the moment in the film.
Christopher Ciccone was asked if he'd like to visit his mothers' grave and of course agreed. He was livid to see a camera setup for a private family moment and refused to participate.
In the film you see footage of Christopher Ciccone fuming at a distance while his famous sister rolls on their mother's grave.
He was furious but bit his tongue.
Money is a great motivation for most of us.

R125, the pic at R123 is shady and disrespectful because it's Madonna looking horrible, and in her SM drag. They could have posted a nice photo of Madonna and her brother. It's just mean, to Madonna and the late Christopher. Are you autistic?
by Anonymous | reply 145 | October 6, 2024 6:24 PM |
Christopher used to be friends with Demi Moore and even did the interior design on one of her homes. But she dropped him when he fell out with Madonna. Later he called Moore, a "diva" who "treats gay men like handbags."

Did he have a drug problem or was he a drug addict? The difference being, was he able to find years of sobriety (at least not on drugs), or was he using close up to the end? Everyone seems to just be dismissing him as a drug addict and that was the reason for his problems. But you could have called me a drug addict for three years in my 30s, but that was twenty years ago. I would be devastated if that is what I would now be defined as.

[quote]Madonna was done rolling around on their mother’s grave ...
She wasn't exactly "rolling around" the way she would on a concert stage. That's frivolous and disrespectful. She laid atop the grave and then rolled on her side to see if she could be fit between her mom's plot and neighboring one. Of course it was all done for the cameras, but I doubt she turned to Chris and said, "Okay, your turn!"

His drug addiction is lightly discussed in his memoir. I don't even recall what his drug of choice was, not that it matters what substance it was. Your life is either manageable or it isn't. The type of drug is irrelevant.
His sister would call him to say "I'm hearing terrible things about you".
But the people who were telling his sister about the terrible things HE was up to, wouldn't mention their own addiction issues!

Re R84, Paula dreamed of being a model, actress, entertainer, but the problem was, unlike her extrovert older sister, Paula was painfully shy and lacked confidence, which impeded her ability to turn it "on" and be a charismatic performer. And Madonna has said that Paula tried so many different careers but never stuck to one before moving on to the next. Perhaps it was the lack of confidence that kept her from accomplishing bigger things.
Paula eventually went back to Michigan, took up wine making at Univ of Michigan and now works at the family winery. So maybe she's found her place and inner peace.

[quote] madonna Edited • 45m
My brother Christopher is gone.
He was the closest human to me for so long
Its hard to explain our bond
But it grew out of an understanding that we were different and society was going to give us a hard time for not following the status quo.
We took each other‘s hands and we danced through the madness of our childhood
In fact dance was a kind of superglue that held us together.
Discovering Dance in our small Midwestern town saved me and then my brother came along, and it saved him too
My ballet Teacher, also named Christopher- created a safe space for my brother to be Gay.
a word that was not spoken or even whispered where we lived.
When I finally got the courage to go to New York to become a Dancer.
My brother followed.
And again we took each other’s hands, and we danced through the madness of New York City!
We devoured Art and Music And Film like hungry animals
we were in the epicenter of all of these things exploding.
We danced through the madness of the AIDS epidemic.
We went to funerals and we cried, and we went dancing. We danced together on stage in the beginning of my career and eventually, he became the Creative Director, of many tours. When it came to good taste, my brother was the Pope, and you had to kiss the ring to get his blessing.
We defied the Roman Catholic Church,
The Police, the Moral Majority and all Authority figures that got in the way of Artistic freedom!
My brother was right by my side.
He was a painter a poet and a visionary.
I admired him. He had impeccable taste. And a sharp tongue, Which he sometimes used against me but I always forgave him.
We soared the highest heights together
And floundered in the lowest lows.
Somehow, we always found each other again and We held hands and we kept dancing.
The last few years have not been easy
We did not speak for sometime but When my brother got sick. We found our way back to each other.
I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible.
He was in so much pain towards the end
Once again, we held hands We closed our eyes and we danced.Together.
I’m glad he’s not suffering anymore.
There will never be anyone like him.
I know he’s dancing somewhere.💔

Madonna and her stepmother, and with Christopher.
Madonna was not a monster. She visited AIDS wards in the late 80s/early 90s and would lay with patients dying she did not know. This was not revealed until decades later. She paid for their funerals. She’s given millions to AIDS research. She did a make a wish with a young fan dying of cancer. She went above and beyond by calling the girl every day and would talk with her for hours as seen on Oprah. She privately reached out to Gloria Estefan after her bus crash, and they become good friends to this day. She reached out to Whitney after her first miscarriage and the birth of Bobbi K, and she reached out to Toni Braxton who was going through hell, wanted to quit the business, but Madonna urged her not to.

R192 Christopher Ciccone did not name his long term (first) love in his memoir. He did write this boyfriend accused him of cheating too many times and their separation was acrimonious. I have been waiting all day for Madonna to post. Now that it's up, I am finding to be more than I expected it to be, but somehow less than I'd hoped for.
My main nit to pick is when she writes, "I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible." While it is more than likely 100% true that Madonna paid for Christopher's cancer treatments/hospice care, it's gauche to publicly claim it. If one has any sense of humility, propriety or good taste one would say "WE (the family, the royal we, etc) did OUR best to keep him alive as long as possible." Because money aside, I'm sure the entire family was doting on him and caring for him right up until he died. Not to mention the doctors and nurses that work so hard every day. By saying "I did my best," Madonna is elevating her financial contribution above the actual hands-on love and care that the rest of the family provided (that she most certainly did not). To me, that hands-on care, that witnessing, keeping bedside vigil, is at least AS crucial if not far MORE so than throwing money at doctor bills from afar. Especially when you consider how much pain her brother was in and the inevitability of his death, life extension is not really such a valuable thing to brag about. I'd have been more moved if she'd included the entire family and/or hospital staff with a "we" statement. I'd have been even MORE moved to hear that Madonna and her children had made a secret pilgrimage to Michigan to attend to Christopher in person with the rest of the family. But, we know that didn't happen.
It would have also been nice if Madonna had bragged about what a great uncle Christopher had come to be to his various nieces and nephews over the years. You know, personal qualities, like how funny or earnest or humble he was. Or what a great winemaker he'd become. Qualities, however mundane, that Christopher might have possessed or developed in his own right, which were distinct from his "journey" as his famous sister's sidekick.
All that aside though, however prone Madonna is to poeticizing loss on Insta and in her art, I bet she's a fucking emotional wreck right now over this loss. Christopher was her bestie and her partner in crime, both in childhood and during her rise to the top. You never forget that kind of bond, those heady memories. His death is the period at the end of arguably the happiest sentence in the book of her life.

I'd say about 75% of my posts are sincere/supportive/reflective/self-revelatory, 20% pointless bitchery/humor, and 5% I will geek out about a topic and hyperfocus, like I did analyzing Madonna's eulogy, which seemed to trigger folks. But I am never looking for trouble. If I am a "fucking freak" then half the people on DL are literal serial killers.

You obviously didn't read Christopher Ciccone's memoir, it's not a tell all.
It's a tell some, hold back more.
It seems he wanted to leave the door open for reconciliation so he held back a lot.
Christopher Ciccone was chosen to be his sister's consigliere for possessing the talent of discretion.
They fell out about money, he complained about being underpaid. Christopher Ciccone also discussed having a huge fight when his sister discovered he changed her a markup for the furnishings sourced for her homes.
The final fallout was more of a pushout by the second husband.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | October 7, 2024 12:33 PM |
It's amazing many of you take Christopher at his word on everything. He was not forthcoming about the extent of his drug use which was the real source of contention over money. Madonna didn't want her bro marking up his prices to fuel his drug habit. He didn't like being called out on it.
The new biography about Madonna from a highly regarded writer who never writes about celebrities , spent 6 years writing this book, and goes into a lot of detail about what really happened. There's no blame assigned it's all facts laid out, but it gives more of Madonna's side. You all should read it. I think you all would come to see her in a different, better light. It thoroughly explains why she is the way she is. It gives a lot of background information that, in context, let's you understand her more and shows you she's not this horrible monster you all have conceived in your head. She's just a flawed human capable of great empathy and extremely bratty behavior, but nothing horrible. Read just the first 9 chapters ( it's 900 pages) and it gives you everything you need to know about her. I came away liking her as a person more.

Seriously, r272, I'll consider your recommendation.
Who is the author?
I was vicariously exhausted reading Andrew Morton's "Madonna", so much that I had to put it down when he got to the Madonna and Sean Penn divorce.
I swear I had to stop then because if I read another description by Morton of Madonna's super-human ambition and drive, I'd have fainted from sheer tiredness.

by Anonymous | reply 278 | October 7, 2024 2:54 PM |
The first 9 chapters aren't 900 pages, FYI. You will understand Madonna clearly from just those chapters. Some of it was quite shocking in a good way.
It also gives a much more nuanced and fascinating look into her time with Camille Barbone. In the end, even Camille admits she didn't have what Madonna needed and Madonna was right to move on. The circumstances of their business break up is sad for both. Camille admits she tried to get Madonna to go in a direction that she didn't want to go in. Madonna gave her chances but time was ticking.
A former girlfriend of Madonna, not romantic, who lived with her during those roach infested years, said both would go on dates to get a good meal, but they would get sick to their stomachs fearing the guys would want sex. Neither of them wanted to have sex. Madonna definitely was not into casual sex at all. She was fairly asexual for a good while.

Christopher was a drug user for a long time. If you've ever had a person in your life who was a drug user and refused to get help, there's a point where you have to cut off ties to them because it's too stressful and chaotic. I don't have the links, but Christopher died of pancreatic and not prostate cancer, per his "spokesperson". He also died in Michigan, but had spent nearly a year living in Madge's LA home while he received cancer treatment there. That's fairly generous of her, she did try to help.
He must have gone back to MI, where his family is, at the end when he knew the fight was up. I wonder if Madonna was there, given she knew the end was near and her stepmother died only a week or two previously.

Yikes pancreatic cancer has a very low survival rate. It took him quickly.
I'm not the least bit surprised she helped him. Her compassion shines through when someone is sick. I'm sure she spared no expense for him.
The family has known the stepmother and Christopher had terminal cancer for months. The poor father. Losing two kids and a wife within a year. They have longevity on both sides provided you don't do heavy drugs or drink.
by Anonymous | reply 290 | October 7, 2024 6:19 PM |
I imagine, R288, that Madonna was not in LA with Christopher but rather facilitated (i.e. paid for) his room, board and cancer treatments from afar. And while that sounds (and is) generous on paper, it's not quite the same as if she'd been there keeping him company. When you have as much money as Madonna, you can throw money at anything and get it done without your life being in any way affected. I also wonder...did Christopher ever meet Lola, Rocco and the rest of the kids? I am just so curious if his and Madonna's detente was just phone calls, or if they physically hung out together in recent years. I feel like she would have posted photos of them together on her IG but maybe not.

LaToya seems to be the only Jackson with a heart and any honesty. Like R330 says - she knew exactly what Michael was doing (they all did) and was the only one to be honest about it before the family reigned her in with threats of being cut off. The rest of the Jackson family are all repulsive grifters, liars, homophobes, anti-Semites, batshit crazy Jehovah's Witnesses, vocal MAGA Trump supporters and the worst of all - they are all filthy paedophile protectors and defenders who don't care how many little boys were raped as long as they kept their money coming in. Disgusting people. Every single one of them.
Say what you will about Madonna because she's definitely not perfect - but compared to anyone in the Jackson family, including Janet; Madonna is a fucking saint and unlike homophobic Janet Jackson - Madonna actually supports and fights for gay people and has done for 40 years when it attracted a lot of negative attention to her. She said fuck all y'all and supported and elevated us anyway.

R332 Many forget she really did put her career on the line for gay rights, gay visibility, gay sexuality. It cost her dearly in middle America. Her record sales (in America)went way down, even though the hits were just as big. (I’ll listen to her, but I can’t buy her). The drop off from TB to LAP is 50%, even though LAP the single was gargantuan, as was EY and Cherish.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | October 9, 2024 2:16 AM |
I didn't know that R333. You really think that was all due to her supporting the gays in her significant but not overly vocal way? It's not that they forget - it's that they pretend she didn't R333. They either pretend she didn't or they shriek that Madonna "used" gays to further her career. And where she might have lost audiences in the US - she picked up audiences all around the world instead to epic numbers and became a global megastar instead. Madonna has always been surrounded by gays and she put us out the front instead of hiding us away like everyone else did.
Yes the imagery of the black Jesus and the stigmata in the Like A Prayer video was the reason the Pepsi commercial was cancelled and the controversary and religious backlash began R334. Madonna just said fuck all y'all and continued unabated.

Oh, I don't know that it was all that. I'm almost her age and a gay NYer, and I was right here for it all. Madonna's "support" was widely touted on MTV and really every other place where music buyers lived. She was popular in the 1980s and 1990s, not the 1890s! Many observed that her advocacy was always accompanied by what the kids call "appropriation", and all in all was more savvy marketing. I'd say Madonna came out with more than the gays. I notice over the years the mythos of "Madonna the Savior to Gays" is second only to "Trans started Stonewall" myth!

R351 No you don’t. If you think supporting the gays in the 19 fucking 80s was anything but risky you’re a breathtakingly stupid person. And no one said she was the savior of gays. To deny she absolutely put her career in jeopardy, and it wasn’t the only time she did or the only issue, shows you are just a hater. Also, you’re warped being a NY gay. You have no fucking clue what life was like in 99% of America during that time, or how viscerally the reaction was to her embrace of not just gays but flamboyant gays. She was America’s beautiful white princess until she shoved very gay men in their faces and did it with a smile. Whatever you think of her, this showed fucking guts and showed a genuine love of gay people.

No Madonna fan at all, but agree with r353. The rest of the country, outside NY-LA, in the 80s and 90s was soooo conservative, not gay-friendly in the least. She really did put it all out there and the hell with where it all fell. And as stated upthread she did have a fall-off in sales, perhaps as a partial result as well as other unrelated factors.
by Anonymous | reply 354 | October 10, 2024 4:18 PM |
Yes, r353!!!
VISCERALLY!!!! Yeah, no.
The gays were grappling with the AIDS crisis and as I recall Madonna attended and publicized the AIDS Dance-athon with Sandra Bernhardt for a year or two and was part of MTV's Rock the Vote campaign, both of which also generated tons of publicity for her as well. I'm sad to learn by me being a "NY Gay" and living only a few blocks from Madonna my experiences and observations are worthless. Frowny face!
I just don't see any huge issues gay people relied on Madonna to solve, most of us were getting the job done pretty well without her. I know the flyover gaylings were astounded by her "Truth or Dare" doc, but it really hasn't held up well now that we've learned how transactionally Madonna treated every gay guy in it, but ok, I respect your truth too.
But as the song goes, "Mame, pull in your claws", ok?
by Anonymous | reply 355 | October 10, 2024 5:31 PM |
Agree with R355. I thought Madonna was a real one, until it came out later that she heightened and romanticized her bond with her gay dancers, used them to feed her ego and create some sort of goddess worship circle around her, and then would discarded them all after the tour. My sense is that Madonna loved The Gays as a group of people, and believed in gay rights, and that she was inspired by certain creative gay artists from when she was first coming up in NYC. But by Truth Or Dare she had developed a raging superiority complex and so, unlike those artists she met her first years in the city, to whom she could look up, these dancers, no matter how talented and ambitious they were, were felt to be beneath her as people. Not because they were gay, but because they were merely backup dancers to her superstar self. Yeah, I think that's what it was, it had nothing to do with Madonna turning on The Gays. She just was apt to use, condescend, make fun of or discard anyone lower on the totem pole than herself.

[quote]and then would discarded them all after the tour.
It was mortifying to feel so rejected.

I hired dancers. I didn't hire lifelong friends.

The dancers were employees. Have you ever developed a deep bond with your co-workers?

Madonna was instrumental in formulating the acceptance of gays in society.

Judy Garland and Bette Midler were far more instrumental.
Judy is a big reason as to why Stonewall happened. Bette sang at the very first pride parade in NYC.

Madonna was instrumental in the 80s and 90s. She brought gay culture into the mainstream in a way it hadn't been before and she was very vocal about gay rights. She did a lot. It was a terribly homophobic time.

Madonna just did a mourning photo shoot for Christopher. She’s disturbed. At least she isn’t showing her fake square ass.
