I hear Ke;ly MacDonald in anything.

by Anonymousreply 1October 4, 2024 4:44 AM

Ads? I call that very feeble.

by Anonymousreply 2October 4, 2024 4:54 AM

What [italic]are[/italic] you wearing?

by Anonymousreply 3October 4, 2024 5:18 AM

Difficult colour, green...very tricky.

The Ivor Novello music is a highlight

by Anonymousreply 5October 4, 2024 6:14 AM

This was Maggie Smith's final nomination for an Oscar, but Helen Mirren was nominated too, and they cancelled each other out.

by Anonymousreply 6October 4, 2024 7:36 AM

I never understood the argument that two actors nominated for the same film cancel each other out. I suppose there are some voters who decide they are going to vote for a performance not on its own merits, but because they want a particular movie to win, but surely they are few in number.

My biggest issue was too many names to keep track of and who was who. The Emily Watson(?) maid was screwing the old man? The old man screwed all the maids? The daughter(?) pregnant and by whom? Almost too many characters but I guess that's a whodunit classic.

by Anonymousreply 8October 4, 2024 3:54 PM

Featuring the thespian stylings of Ryan Philippe!

by Anonymousreply 9October 4, 2024 4:03 PM

The house had such a lovely position.

by Anonymousreply 10October 4, 2024 4:20 PM

The cute young men who arrive at the beginning are barely seen again.

by Anonymousreply 11October 4, 2024 4:22 PM

It's a fun movie, and made me appreciate Altman's style. I had the DVD but just put in a box to donate to the local library as there's no point in keeping physical media anymore.

by Anonymousreply 12October 4, 2024 11:13 PM

The ads are annoying as hell. They’ll cut in when a character is mid-sentence and the channel does that thing where the volume is much louder than when the movie is playing. AND, the ads are the kind where you have to pay attention so you can hit the skip button or you’ll be stuck with one that runs for 5 minutes.

I’m old and increasingly out of touch I admit, but in my opinion, watching TV is a giant fucking pain in the ass nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 13October 5, 2024 1:48 AM

R9, I give Ryan Phillippe some credit for working with a cast of some of the most talented and experienced British actors around. It must have been intimidating.

by Anonymousreply 14October 5, 2024 7:40 AM

R13, I agree. I found the ads so annoying i started paying for youtube premium. I don't have cable so I don't mind paying for a few streaming services (YT premium, netflix, and Max, plus I have prime)

by Anonymousreply 15October 6, 2024 1:17 AM

Always one of my favorites!

by Anonymousreply 16October 6, 2024 5:26 AM

I watched this on Disney+ and my goodness, has it aged well. Perfect casting. Period art direction is flawless. Dear Maggie Smith was wonderful. And Jeremy Northram....swoon.

by Anonymousreply 17January 7, 2025 8:22 PM

Love Jeremy Northam, wish he was in more things

by Anonymousreply 18January 7, 2025 8:25 PM

Clive Owen in this film made me cream.

by Anonymousreply 19January 7, 2025 8:29 PM

“Bought marmalade?!”

by Anonymousreply 20January 7, 2025 8:36 PM

Clive Owen smolders. I felt edgy every time he was on screen, wondering what he was about to unleash.

So many young actors want to be INTENSE. They chew scenery and bray and make a big thing of it all while Clive just IS, and more quietly than any of ‘em.

by Anonymousreply 21January 7, 2025 8:37 PM

R21 Clive could have been so much more than he ended up being. During this time he stole every movie he was in. He's doing ok for himself but with his looks, charisma, and talent, I saw him becoming much bigger. Oh well.

by Anonymousreply 22January 7, 2025 8:47 PM

A bit overrated. But genre defining.

by Anonymousreply 23January 7, 2025 8:55 PM

Love love love this film. The photography downstairs during the Novello scene is sublime. And then there's the cast. Just gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 24January 7, 2025 9:01 PM

The end was a bit rushed, but otherwise exquisite in every way.

by Anonymousreply 25January 7, 2025 9:15 PM

I don’t suppose she’d care for strawberry jam, r20?

…no, I thought not.

by Anonymousreply 26January 7, 2025 9:23 PM

I really wanted to see Clive Owen as Bond after watching CROUPIER. Agree with you regarding his career, R22.

by Anonymousreply 27January 7, 2025 9:31 PM

I've seen this movie several times and the only thing I remember about it is Clive Owen is in it.

by Anonymousreply 28January 7, 2025 9:32 PM

Repeating myself from the underwhelmed thread: I bought this on Prime Video yesterday for $4.99. Not sure whether it's still on sale but it's worth checking if you don't already have it.

by Anonymousreply 29January 7, 2025 9:44 PM

Altman was a great filmmaker,

by Anonymousreply 30January 7, 2025 9:48 PM

"Oh, none of us will see it."

by Anonymousreply 31January 7, 2025 10:43 PM

Kristin Scott Thomas always reminded me of Madonna in this film. It was the coloring and body type, I think.

Constance's love for breakfast and her glee at seeing Ryan Phillipe's comeuppance with the hot coffee will never not be funny. Maggie Smith gave a master class in comedic timing in that film.

Sigh. A great collective piece of work in a genre begging for a send up.

by Anonymousreply 32January 8, 2025 1:28 AM

One of my favorites. And, the music is great...Jeremy Northam is not only deliciously yummy, he has a terrific voice.

The only clunky thing in the film is the dumb police detective. I get what Altman was doing but it was heavy handed.

So many great performances in it. Maggie is terrific obviously (and, this character is soooooooo much better than her character in stupid Downton Abbey) but Helen Mirren and Kelly Macdonald and Kristin Scott Thomas and Emily Watson and poor sad Claudie Blakley and her sad green dress. And, CLIVE! All of them are fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 33January 8, 2025 8:36 AM

[quote]The only clunky thing in the film is the dumb police detective.

Stephen Fry playing Stephen Fry. I feel like the story fell off the rails once he came in, despite some good moments.

That bit at the end with Eileen Atkins and Helen Mirren was a moment worth that pairing, though.

by Anonymousreply 34January 8, 2025 8:38 AM

worthy of that pairing* (come on, coffee)
