“Are you wearing the Chanel boots? Yes, we are. A white-haired, powdered, starch-cuffed petty dictator who ruled over the expanding business with an iron fist, stopping every once in a while to make a misogynist or racist public comment, Karl Lagerfeld was one of the most influential figures in the fashion industry as it shifted into late capitalist hyperdrive. Come for the racist and misogynist public comments, stay for Lagerfeld's great love, Jacques de Bascher, who may more perfectly epitomize Evil Twink Energy than anyone we've discussed on our show.”
Was Karl Lagerfeld a “Bad Gay”?

No, just autistic.

He was genuinely a terrible, terrible human being. But he was occasionally amusing.

He was industrious. And well read.

I like to think Choupette made him a better person. He catered to her every whim.

I'm r4.

Did you listen to the podcast OP? I like the podcaster's notion of evil twink energy, but they often repeat the notion (in other podacts) that homosexuality has failed. I find that part of their politics baffling.

I did listen to it, but it has been awhile. I have listened to a number of their podcasts. They are inconsistent, and their politics increasingly began to bother me the more I listened to their stuff. I liked their Orton/Halliwell episode very much. The Liberace episode is good. Karl deserves better.

Karl: “People can say and write what they like about me, almost, because I work on the principle: Say what you like, as long as it isn’t true.”

Oh yeah

I just bought a blingy pair of his men's sneakers at a thrift store. They're too loud for me to ever wear.

Remember his fan period?
Margaret Cho hilariously mocked him about this: "I am Karl Lagerfeld fffffuriously fffffanning the ffffflames of my fffffaggotry!"

I liked Karl. While he could be harsh, he was rarely wrong.

The fan was for his menopause hot flashes.

Agree with R13. He said what a lot of people in the fashion industry think but would not say.

He wasn't terrible. He was just very German. Blunt, unsentimental and totally unfiltered.

I liked the series about him "Becoming Karl Lagerfeld".

Jesus Christ R12 read the thread before you post.

Met him once at an event, (have a friend who was a big wig @ Chanel) Karl had the WORST breath. The ONLY thing that comes to mind when I hear of him or see a photo. Beyond rancid......

He ate some weird food. Protein powders. More than a dozen Diet Cokes a day.

Maybe the fan was for the halitosis fumes?
