‘Sugar,’ Starring Colin Farrell, Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+

The drama, which streamed in the spring, contained a big twist in its finale.

Apple TV+ wants another helping of Sugar.

The tech behemoth’s streaming service has picked up a second season of the drama, which stars Colin Farrell as the title character, Detective John Sugar. The first season followed John’s search for a missing woman — and revealed a big twist late in the season that helps set the stage for season two.

“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace ‘Sugar,’ and we are thrilled to return for a second season,” executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg said in a statement. “We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”

Added Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, “Since its premiere, audiences have been gripped by the mysteries and twists of Sugar, with an incredible performance by Colin Farrell at the center. Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon and the entire team behind this series have brilliantly blended genres to create a compelling, can’t-miss series that keeps viewers guessing, and we cannot wait to see where Detective John Sugar finds himself in season two.”

The show’s first season premiered in April and concluded its eight-episode run on May 17. Season two, Apple says, will bring Sugar back to Los Angeles for another missing-person case while he continues to look for answers about his missing sister. Farrell, who’s also an executive producer of Sugar, has two high-profile series going at the moment. He also stars in The Penguin at HBO, which has drawn big audiences for its first two episodes.

Season one of Sugar also stars Kirby, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler, and Alex Hernandez. It’s not clear whether any of them will return for season two.

Catlin (Breaking Bad, Preacher) will be the showrunner for season two and executive produce via his Short Drive Entertainment. Chon and Kinberg, who has an overall deal at Apple TV+, exec produce for Genre Films along with Farrell, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich. Mark Protosevich created the series.
