Yes, We Have No Bananas! East Coast Longshoremen to go on strike.

The International Longshoremen’s Association is threatening to strike at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday in a move that could silence ports that handle about half the ship cargo coming in and going out of the U.S.

Interesting timing

How long until there's the usual run on toilet paper?

by Anonymousreply 2October 1, 2024 3:55 AM

Comfort twinks, bears and otters are on their way to...ease negotiations. 😉

by Anonymousreply 3October 1, 2024 4:20 AM

Is this another attempt at permanent price gouging due to shipping interruption? I’m pro-Union, but the Teamsters….

by Anonymousreply 4October 1, 2024 4:41 AM

What does Marlon Brando think?

by Anonymousreply 5October 1, 2024 4:43 AM

Will stevedores be joining them?

by Anonymousreply 6October 1, 2024 4:44 AM

The article makes it seem that the Company is giving a lot in terms of pay raises (50% vs. 77%) and increased 401(k) contributions, which is huge. If the union is serious about automation being its main sticking point in terms of protecting future jobs then I can respect that kind of determination, even if it does seem like a huge reach/pile of bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 7October 1, 2024 5:30 AM

Ok, it could be this: corps have made ++billions on the Covid shipping crisis which they have prolonged in perpetuity and the actual workers want a piece?

by Anonymousreply 8October 1, 2024 6:24 AM

Prolonged in perpetuity without punity so please proffer a piece to the proliteriat u peckers.

by Anonymousreply 9October 1, 2024 6:40 AM

My favorite shipping guru, Sal Mercogliano, has been all over this for weeks. Here's a discussion that covers this pretty well.

Who’s in the right here?

by Anonymousreply 11October 1, 2024 9:06 PM

I think Management has made a good offer. If this asshole Daggett is posturing and showing off he is doing it for politics and $$$ he is crooked as a cork screw.

Now, let's scrape away the bluster. Here's what will be affected by a prolonged strike: Cars. Imported cars. Furniture and clothing but the real hardship will be the blowback to the countries that supply these goods. And possibly appliances, and parts for these things.

Produce, toilet paper, eggs, milk etc.,etc.,etc. are all locally produced or brought in from Mexico, South and Central America and Canada. So. We'll be fine and we send our love!

by Anonymousreply 12October 1, 2024 10:48 PM

R12, there's also the problem of congestion at other ports as ships get re-routed. LA and Houston are already over-busy. And as Sal points out, we didn't learn much from the pandemic problem of empty containers piling up as more loaded ships come in but go out empty. So it's not just going to be goods on the East Coast that will be affected.

by Anonymousreply 13October 1, 2024 11:35 PM

If politics are part of his decision-making, that would piss me off, R12. Joe Biden is a friend of Labor, yet there's probably blood in the water since the Teamsters went MAGA. Nevertheless, Joe won't stop the workers' from striking. Do these idiot workers think The Pussygrabber and his corporate cronies would spend ONE BREATH in solidarity? No, they would be pulling every lever of the Federal Government (that they want to dismantle) to end the strike and force people back to work!

That said, I'll repeat that if the unions' true concern is automation, I would like to hear just how badly the last proposal fell short addressing that concern.

by Anonymousreply 14October 2, 2024 12:45 AM

Teamster locals are supporting the Dems, and the Teamster President is whoring after Trump, just like Daggett. And yeah, be mad. Because a good faith offer was put on the table and Daggett and his members are pissed off because automation is going to eliminate some jobs. This battle was fought decades ago in the auto industry and it's an old song. The longshoremen have been notorious for decades in having make work jobs where guys sign in and walk out as no shows getting paid. Daggett thinks he can hold them hostage because of robots?

by Anonymousreply 15October 2, 2024 1:48 AM

They're not Teamsters, R4. Besides, support for labor shouldn't be transactional.

by Anonymousreply 16October 2, 2024 1:57 AM

The run on stores for necessities and how long this lasts is going to hurt Harris, just as Covid hurt Trump. Biden has refused to invoke Taft-Hartley, which will make American consumers and businesses suffer unnecessarily.

by Anonymousreply 17October 3, 2024 1:30 AM

Could someone be trying to sabotage the election with this strike?

by Anonymousreply 18October 3, 2024 3:13 PM

Yes, we have some bananas, thanks to Joe!

[quote]U.S. dockworkers agreed to return to work after port operators sweetened their contract offer, ending a three-day strike that threatened to disrupt the American economy. The breakthrough Thursday came after port employers offered a 62% increase in wages over six years, according to people familiar with the matter. The agreement ends a strike that had closed container ports from Maine to Texas and threatened to disrupt everything from the supply of bananas in supermarkets to the flow of cars through America’s factories.

The new offer, up from an earlier proposed raise of 50%, came after the White House privately and publicly pressed the large shipping lines and cargo terminal operators who employ the longshore workers to make a new offer to the union.

President Biden applauded the agreement, saying in a statement, “Collective bargaining works, and it is critical to building a stronger economy from the middle out and the bottom up.”

I hope Kamala finds something for him to do. No substitute for the experience and cunning Joe Biden has. I'm sure Kamala will be an outstanding President. But Joe should not be discarded. He should be used as an acknowledgement of his deep vast experience. Joe is Smort!

by Anonymousreply 20October 4, 2024 1:52 AM

why is it only east coast?

by Anonymousreply 21October 4, 2024 2:01 AM

[quote] Many U.S. dockworkers currently earn more than a $100,000 a year, with baseline hourly wages boosted by work rules and overtime requirements.

People who already make a six figure income getting a 62% wage hike is kind of sickening. The agreement is only through January 15th, 2025, so that it doesn’t affect the election.

by Anonymousreply 22October 4, 2024 4:48 AM

R21, it's because the West Coast longshoremen belong to a different union which just renewed their own contract.

by Anonymousreply 23October 4, 2024 5:31 AM

Well, this thread aged like . . . A BANANA
