Strange move. She always struck me as a lefty in the past... vegan, animal rights activist, environmentalist, pro gay marriage (before it was popular), etc.
But then I've learnt she endorsed RFK Jr when he was a Democrat and then became independent, so it seems like this move is due to her loyalty to him.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 30, 2024 8:42 AM |
She's always been weird. She has a Youtube channel now (vegan cooking) and her relationship with her son is seems off. When he was little (but still MUCH older than a baby/toddler) she used to brag all the time about her 'attachment parenting' style or whatever: it was always about him like sleeping bed with her every night (he was like 9 at the time) and how she would like chew up his food and feed it to him in her mouth like a baby bird. It sounds made up but I *swear* they were always doing little cutsey People Mag stories about it like it was totally normal. Cut to 10 years later and the kid is obviously emotionally stunted and does not seem like a normal teen at all. She clearly adores him....but in a 'devouring mother' kind of way.

R21 That's actually a really good point. I knew a couple of slightly strange alternative medicine ladies before the pandemic. They were warm and friendly and, if you had any health issues, they'd always have some recommendation about some herb or natural remedy. I'd ignore their advice, but it was always well meaning.
However, when covid landed, they became anti lockdown and vehemently anti the covid vaccination. If it had stopped there, I wouldn't have cared, but they then became much harder and nastier; making out that anyone who 'complied' with the vaccinations were really stupid, "sheep", etc. It was strange to witness the shift from eccentric but kindly to angry and ranty.
I cut contact with them at that point. Life's too short to have people insulting you for choices you make about your own body and health.

Covid really radicalised some people and they found themselves lapping up anti government conspiracy theories, especially on Ukraine. It didn’t help that the Chinese lab leak was dismissed as a conspiracy and we were initially told it wasn’t an airborne virus.
There was a real sense of polarisation online where people were encouraged to be pro or anti vaccine, pro or anti lockdown.
But then there were some absolutely crazy pro lockdown people even now wear masks everywhere and don’t allow their kids to mix in indoor spaces.

As we discovered in 2000 with Nader; 2016 with Bernie and Jill Stein (and no, I am NOT equating Bernie Sanders, a principled socialist/social Democrat, with ignorant foreign stooge Stein); 2020 with COVID/lockdowns/vaccines; and 2023/24 with the more extreme anti-Israel protesters and puzzling hostility to Biden/Harris/center-left Democrats, the extreme far Left has bent so far backwards they're bumping uglies with the far-Right GOPers.
People who are so easily led down Conspiracy Lane, and set up permanent residence there, are dangers to democracy. It's a profound anti-intellectualism cloaked in arrogant superciliousness that refuses to let in any information that does not comport with their beliefs. R39 Agree with this. It often starts with valid concerns that some doctors can sometimes over prescribe certain medication (often just because they're really busy) when perhaps therapy or other forms of treatment should be tried first. Obviously that doesn't apply in many cases, though.
But some quickly veer into seeing doctors as the enemy; often calling them "shills" for big pharma. Many will outright accuse all doctors of only prescribing medication because of the payments they'll get from big pharma. They forget there's regulation over medication - particularly prescription medication - and any doctor who was repeatedly prescribing medication that a patient didn't need would be quickly identified and struck off.
Then, once they're convinced of that, they're more open to other conspiracy theories. I saw one recently say people shouldn't wear sunblock because it's full of dangerous chemicals, compared to sunlight being natural and giving your skin a 'natural glow'. While sunlight on your skin does generate vitamin D it's clearly much more harmful to spend time in direct sunlight with no protection and burn than it is to put sunblock on. But when you try and make that argument, they then instantly see you as someone who's been "captured" and the insults rain down.
Then I think... well, if you honestly believe all that, the only one who'll suffer is you, so carry on if you must.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 1, 2024 11:03 AM |
The anti-VAX stuff makes me so angry because I understand firsthand how it can take hold. I’m a dad, and when my kid had her first major round of vaccinations, she had an awful night. Lots of crying and just “strange” behavior. I, a leftie who is fully a person of science and who never thought myself susceptible to conspiracies, spent the day convinced I had broken my child’s brain. Which of course, was untrue. By the next day, she was back to herself. Babies have lots of off days, and this was just coincidence. But if I could fall victim to these ideas, then I can see how someone who leans more towards the right and gets their information from Facebook very easily could, particularly if their kid does end up having some delays. And that’s exactly what these anti-VAX people fucking want.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 1, 2024 11:16 AM |
I’ll never understand people like her who complain that the Covid vaccine represented loss of bodily autonomy (it didn’t), yet somehow seem cool with supporting TFG who brags about stacking the SC in order to end RvW. When we took our dog to get vaccinated, the vet would tell us that the dog would be sleepy and out of it for a day after, but not to worry.
Vaccines cause an immune reaction. That’s how they work and temporary off-ness is completely normal. I think there’s this defensiveness to the anti-vaxxers that makes people want to down-play normal, temporary, non-dangerous reactogenicity (sp?) which in the end isn’t helpful.

R84, I was staying at a house in Bellaire with some friends, and these friends know her and invited her over. She came for dinner and brought her kid - who I believe is named Bear - with her. The kid needed a bath and some grooming. She wouldn't take any leftovers because there was only plastic storage containers and she didn't want to have plastic in her house - it clearly stressed her out to think about what to do with it. So I guess she wanted glass or paper containers and anything else would be problematic for her. She also didn't smile. She had a friendly tone, but never smiled and was sort of like stone the whole time. "Bear, come here" - "Bear, do you want some guacamole?" - all very serious. She wasn't light and fun.

I have googled and can't find anything to link her directly to MAGA. It seems she is a fan of RFK Jr. but not of Trump. But I guess she'll be voting for Trump now that RFK. Jr has endorsed Trump - which was always going to happed. She cancelled her Democratic Party membership several years ago and registered as an independent. She has said she is deeply disappointed in the Democratic Party. Obviously she's very likable but a bit batshit. She's hard line vegan, a severe environmentalist and maybe an anti-vaxxer too? I still like her. She's not a full on MAGA - they would absolutely hate her. Hopefully she won't vote at all.
