Dame Joan Collins on a British talk show last week.

Ok, that low neck line is not a good choice for her, but damn, she's 91 years old and still looks and talks like Joan Collins.

IMHO Joan still seems contemporary, while Jane Fonda now comes across as a surgically improved old lady.

Funny when asked about Warren Beatty, she says "nobody knows who he is any more".

I hope someday they can do do brain transplants into new bodies. It's unfortunate that your body dies around you.

Omg I read op’s topic as Judy Collin’s instead of Joan Collin’s. I’m thinking to myself Judy Collin’s!! Yuk!

by Anonymousreply 2September 29, 2024 11:28 PM

Autocorrect made me reply Collin’s instead of Collins

by Anonymousreply 3September 29, 2024 11:29 PM

About Beatty, who or where he is? He hasn't been seen in ages.

by Anonymousreply 4September 29, 2024 11:50 PM

In the interview Joan mentions her 1977 film "Empire of the Ants".

2.70 out of 10 Rating on Rotten Tomatoes,

The trailer looks good!

I liked hearing her talk, there. I guess she's a sun worshiper, hence the tanned and crepey skin on the chest.

Both she and Jane Fonda have had plastic surgery; Jane has probably had more. Jane has managed to stay thinner.

by Anonymousreply 6September 30, 2024 1:59 AM

She looks great.

by Anonymousreply 7September 30, 2024 3:37 AM

That was a terrific interview, she was so witty and sharp and self-deprecating and yet regal at the same time.

It's funny she should mention Empire of the Ants, that was the nadir of her career, right before Dynasty, and the picture is delightfully inept; I recommend it.

by Anonymousreply 8September 30, 2024 4:04 AM

[quote]That was a terrific interview, she was so witty and sharp and self-deprecating and yet regal at the same time.

Yes!

by Anonymousreply 9September 30, 2024 4:29 AM

Yeah, she's got that really nice way of speaking that could sound snobby, but she's relatively down-to-earth. Love that she mentioned "Empire of the Ants." (Faye Dunaway could take notes and just enjoy "Mommie Dearest.")

She dated Warren Beatty before he became famous. I wonder what he did to leave such a bad memory.

by Anonymousreply 10September 30, 2024 4:33 AM

I was lucky enough to meet her briefly years ago, and she was very nice. Not a diva at all.

by Anonymousreply 11September 30, 2024 4:42 AM

Honey, she's 91. Of course her chest skin is crepey.

by Anonymousreply 13September 30, 2024 4:56 AM

Weird though that she would wear something so low cut to show off the crepe, no?

Well, she's 91. I guess she can do whatever pleases her.

by Anonymousreply 14September 30, 2024 4:58 AM

Her politics are far, far right a d she has you all fooled.

by Anonymousreply 15September 30, 2024 5:01 AM

Dame Joan keeps perpetuating the myth that she didn't employ the casting couch to get ahead in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 16September 30, 2024 5:03 AM

She looks better than those gals around her who must be half her age.

by Anonymousreply 17September 30, 2024 5:08 AM

Loose Women is an unfortunate title for a TV show.

by Anonymousreply 18September 30, 2024 5:13 AM

That jacket (white with black lapels) she's wearing in the interview is from Dynasty.

by Anonymousreply 19September 30, 2024 5:19 AM

That was a great interview. She really is incredible for 91 years old, telling all of those stories without losing track or rambling, and all whilst dressed up to the nines. She is still instantly recognisable as Joan Collins.

by Anonymousreply 20September 30, 2024 12:30 PM

Warren is allegedly suffering from dementia, no? Last time we saw him, he and Faye were announcing the wrong best picture. And when Annette was nominated for best actress this past year, the nearly 90 year old Beatty did not accompany her.

by Anonymousreply 21September 30, 2024 1:38 PM

She’s pretty much the last one standing of her peers. She can pretty much say anything and probably won’t be libelled

by Anonymousreply 22September 30, 2024 1:40 PM

Her voice is still mellifluous and that means a lot. Old lady voice hasn't set in. And no slurring. Martha Stewart still sounds good too at 83.

Jane Fonda's voice is getting that wobbly thing.

by Anonymousreply 23September 30, 2024 5:19 PM

Her movie The Bitch is one of my personal favorite movies.

by Anonymousreply 24September 30, 2024 5:31 PM

R23 I feel Jane does it on purpose to almost be a modern Katharine Hepburn type

by Anonymousreply 25September 30, 2024 5:35 PM

Interesting when she was talking about costumes, she never mentioned Nolan Miller. She made it sound like she went to Saks and Neiman's and just took whatever she liked. She also pointedly left out Forsythe and Evans when listing the Dynasty actors she loved.

by Anonymousreply 29September 30, 2024 7:07 PM

At one point she did mention Linda

by Anonymousreply 30September 30, 2024 7:09 PM

She looks "contemporary" only to the extent that plastic surgery has given her a perpetual smile, which I guess is better than other comes like the look of perpetual surprise or the utter lack of emotion. Fonda had much better, more subtle work. Collins may have outlived others, but she's still just a second rate actress who got lucky with a night time soap. There are still plenty of movie buffs who know well haw she was known as the 19th hole.

by Anonymousreply 31September 30, 2024 7:26 PM

she's just one of those

lucky bitches

by Anonymousreply 32September 30, 2024 7:49 PM

Nobody has a bad thing to say about Linda except Joan it seems.

by Anonymousreply 33September 30, 2024 8:16 PM

Samantha Eggar would have made a great soap bitch in the same way as Joan. She was great in Return from the Ashes where she played a vixen with a cut glass English accent.

by Anonymousreply 34September 30, 2024 8:26 PM

She did mention Linda and Diahann Carroll.

The smile I think is natural. Britney Spears did get the corners of her mouth turned up via surgery. joan may also just have trained herself to smile all the time.

But yes she had had plastic surgery and could use a better wig.

Overall, though, she seems happy and still full of life.

by Anonymousreply 35September 30, 2024 8:28 PM

Joanie didn't mention Linda when she was talking about the co-stars she loved. She did mention Linda and Diahann when talking about being instructed not to eat from craft services.

by Anonymousreply 36September 30, 2024 9:18 PM

Joan only mentioned Linda when she was talking about how she and Linda had to be cautioned not to eat anything from the craft table besides carrot sticks and celery. Joan did not mention Linda as she listed the Dynasty actors she loved and missed, among a small group who included John James, Emma Samms and Stephanie Beacham.

As to the shape of her smile, with all that lipstick smeared over her lips, how can anyone tell what the shape of her mouth really is?

by Anonymousreply 39September 30, 2024 10:38 PM

I’m only in my 60s and my neck and chest are crepey. Plus, I’ve never been a sun worshipper. And I’ve never exposed my cleavage.

Oh, wait a minute. I’ve never HAD cleavage.

by Anonymousreply 40September 30, 2024 10:46 PM

R39,

Anthony Newley was a pop star in the late 50s/early 60s, so he must have had some appeal.

by Anonymousreply 41September 30, 2024 10:52 PM

I find her interesting at this point but mostly because she's been at it for close to 75 years and is still going strong. Looking at her IMDB page and she worked alongside many actors who, along with Beatty, people just don't know anymore. I was never a Dynasty fan (restaurant worker back in the 80s and didn't own a VCR I guess).

But an insight as to her being propelled as a celebrity is again the IMDB page. 137 acting credits but 327 credits as "Self." Not the sole criterion but a fairly good indicator that much of her popularity is in being herself.

by Anonymousreply 42September 30, 2024 11:17 PM

I thought Anthony Newley was very sexy. Short, but sexy.

by Anonymousreply 43September 30, 2024 11:27 PM

r50 - I'm sure it could be true given that she's an unapologetic Tory, but I thought she might be more Country Club Republican than Trumpster in her American views. by Anonymousreply 59October 1, 2024 2:59 AM

We know John disliked Joan, particularly after she snatched that People’s Choice Award away and spoke first at the 1986 awards show. I don’t think Linda hated her, but there was no love loss and they weren’t friends. Pamela Sue Martin felt the same, and thought Joan was a ridiculous woman. Michael Nader and her had some kind of falling out, but I forget the nature of it right now. But the ones that were in the Joan camp were Gordon Thomson, John James, Emma Samms, Stephanie Beacham, and Diahann Carroll (like she stated). I think the neutral ones were Al Corley, Jack Coleman, Pamela Bellwood, and Catherine Oxenberg.

Joan is British, and Britain is a conservative country. Labour are in power now, but that is rarely the case.

by Anonymousreply 69October 1, 2024 7:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 70October 1, 2024 10:13 AM

R60 A few months after John Forsythe died in 2010, I remember Collins had done an interview to 'set the record' straight.

She said that her cordial relationship with the actor ended when she decided to pose for PLAYBOY at the age of 50 in the summer of 1983, just as the fourth season on the show was going into production.

She claimed Forsythe had gone straight to the top at ABC demanding they fire Collins, claiming her posing nude was against network policy and in violation of the 'decency' clause in each of the cast member's contract 'forbidding' them to do any nudity in any projects (including movies and magazines) while they were employed by ABC. He also warned Aaron Spelling that the show was going to suffer the consequences of her 'selfish actions', and they would see a drop in viewership / ratings once the magazine came out (December, 1983). The cast was split on siding with Forsythe or Collins, and caused animosity on the set.

Collins pointed out none of this happened - the magazine was the best selling issue in their 30 year history (at that time), and ratings for the show soared soon after. Once that storm was over, most everything went back to 'normal' (pre-Playboy photo shoot), though she stayed her distance from Forsythe and Evans (only talking to each actor when the script called for it, not off-camera). She explained why this is why that GG acceptance speech was so awkward on stage, as Forsythe wouldn't stand near Collins.

She did resume a 'working relationship' with Evans by the series end, and ended up proposing their working together on the tour of "Legends" in the 2000s, and we know what she thought of Evans during that fiasco.

by Anonymousreply 71October 2, 2024 12:06 AM

R71 I’ve heard John was non too pleased with the Playboy spread she did, but I’ve never heard he went to the network demanding she get fired. Dumb move, considering the show was huge at that point, and short of murdering someone, there’s no way they’d get rid of Joan. Joan saved the show, but I know there was some resentment of her from day one from the cast members that had been there from its inception. Pamela Sue I believe was content playing Fallon with a bitchiness and edge, but when Joan joined the show, all that slid over to her character Alexis, and Fallon got watered down.

by Anonymousreply 74October 2, 2024 2:08 AM

R72 Yes, I recall PSM saying the main reason she decided to leave was because they turned Alexis into what Fallon was supposed to be.

by Anonymousreply 75October 2, 2024 2:30 AM

Turned Alexis? She came in blazing from her first episode in season two.

by Anonymousreply 76October 2, 2024 3:21 AM

R76 She did - and the writers turned Fallon more into Krystal and made room for Alexis.

by Anonymousreply 77October 2, 2024 3:42 AM

R74 the first season is underrated, mainly as a cynical, dark examination of people that are rich. Then Joan came on the scene, and while she was great for about her first three seasons, she ended up swallowing the show whole, to its detriment. It really became just a celebration of the rich, and they can do no wrong. The smartest thing they did in the last season was to limit her appearances (Linda also but she was leaving anyway), to allow the show to breathe and focus on other characters more. Less Alexis went a long way, and by this time the Krystle character had run its course.

by Anonymousreply 78October 2, 2024 4:21 AM

I’m a fan of the first season. I saw it as a modern Written on the Wind. Then Joan entreated and brought with it a whole lot of camp in her delivery… I like the first season with her in it, but it got a bit tedious after season 3 perhaps, I stopped watching it so can’t really say.

by Anonymousreply 79October 2, 2024 6:35 AM

Speaking of Written on the Wind, Robert Stack might have made a good Blake. I wonder if he was a consideration along with Peppard.

by Anonymousreply 81October 2, 2024 6:51 AM

R81: It was obvious long before Brexit that she was a second rate actress who lied about her trashy past. She really shouldn't have had much of career once she was playing supporting cast to fiberglass giant ants.

R83 did I say it was? Dallas had 10 seasons where the writing was strong to impeccable. Dynasty couldn’t muster that beyond half its run (even though the last season of the show had a creative renaissance). But Dynasty knew how to end the show with everyone happy, compared to Dallas with JR, Pam and Christopher dead and Cliff rotting away in jail. Dismal ending for once a great show.

R84 If I'm not mistaken, he did do a photo shoot for the magazine where he was shirtless (and wet) with a towel wrapped around his waist - I think he was near a pool.

I do recall rumors in the press that they had made an offer to actor Al Corley (the first 'Steven') to do a full nude pictorial back then, in 1983 -84 when he was promoting his new TV drama 'Bare Essence' and launching his pop music career (which went un-noticed in the USA). At the time, he was involved with Carly Simon who was 15 years his senior (he was 25, she was 40) and she was quietly 'managing' his career - it was supposedly her idea that he do the Playgirl spread. Alas, it never happened. (And yes - Simon was the one behind his short-lived pop music career).

by Anonymousreply 97October 3, 2024 7:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 98October 3, 2024 7:43 PM

Didn't Dallas benefit from a fairly consistent writing and production team over the ten years? Dynasty was a revolving door of writers.

[quote]I recall PSM saying the main reason she decided to leave was because they turned Alexis into what Fallon was supposed to be.

It's funny though because later the show had multiple bitches on at the same time at various points: Dominique, Sammy Jo, Sable... they were all making trouble. Probably some I've forgotten as the show got so stupid, like a lot of people, I drifted off at some point. Never completely, but it wasn't weekly appointment TV. There was, in retrospect, no good reason to soften Fallon... she could have mixed it up in her own way. Part of the problem was PSM brought to life a strong character but she was always sent back to John James, who did not.

I also loved the first and second seasons... good story telling, comparatively complex characters.
