Drake Hogestyn is DEAD TO ME
Dead of pancreatic cancer just one day shy of his 71st birthday.
Family statement: “It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn. He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
He was the most amazing husband, father, papa, and actor. He loved performing for the Days audience and sharing the stage with the greatest cast, crew, and production team in the business.
We love him and we will miss him all the Days of our Lives.” -The Hogestyn Family

I'm stunned by the news, Very sad. RIP.
But he certainly hasn't looked well on camera in recent weeks. And the scenes we're seeing now were filmed early in 2024.

I was a OLTL and Y&R watcher as a little boy in the late 80's-90's. Two shows I "sampled" during the summers of 88-89 were Days and GL- both felt like the NBC version of OLTL that/those summers (Nothing could touch OLTL, to me) but I really liked both those shows! (I particularly remember Roger Thorpe in a mask- in a cave? Sonnie and Solita, and Laura is on DAYS?, and some chick that was a "young Tina" on DOOL that I LOVED- with big blue eyes- EVE??? Holy fuck- I loved her!
As a 9-10 year old, I knew that Drake was HOT!
Ultimately our HOTNESS turns to skin and bones and then turns to dust.
I am pushing 45 and I now "get it"
RIP Handsome Drake! (And it reminds me of Andrea Evans and those EYES of hers) Do they really die?
Hopefully we all return to our eternal hotness and joy- forever.
This one gets me for some reason, and I was not even a "fan".

Aww, bummer. I got really into Days in the mid 90's and through Drake was the hottest guy in the show. Austin and Bo were cute, but John was so sexy.

Perhaps it is time to end the show. Not to be such a Mary but if you really think about it all the biggest players are dying and they’re tried bringing in a younger crop and it never takes. I’m not sure how they handle this. Is Marlena going to be single now? I don’t think viewers would handle her starting a relationship with Roman again. Stefano, Victor, John, and even Doug are gone. Three within the last year. What’s next, turn the windows into The Golden Girls? That cunt Ari Zucker is also gone and Alison Sweeney is MIA. Let’s not forget Missy. There’s just what three left? Even the gays sans one are gone. No one wants to watch NuEJ or that rancid cunt Stacy Haiduk. The show has been decimated.

I feel like such a Mary! I can't believe how sad this has made me. It's been nice reading all the comments in social media.
As for Drake's acting, 3/4 of the battle in acting, especially in soaps, is knowing your lines, knowing your marks, and just being prepared to shoot and move on. By all accounts, Drake was always prepared. John Black was Daytime's answer to Jason Bourne. Drake embodied that character and it worked. No, he wasn't Olivier, but he made that character work in a way that many actors could not have pulled off.
One final note, his death got Genie Francis to comment on how kind and nice he was. Genie Francis seems to hate everything, but she said something nice about Drake. That says a lot.

I agree with R80 to a point. However, with social media invading every aspect of our lives, it's not wrong for fans to want to see comments from others. It's part of the process. As for Dee, she always seems to take a beat or two before jumping into the fray with a statement. She eventually will, but only when she thinks it's right, and she doesn't care if others don't like that.

One of my favorite and more recent scenes with Drake was when John traveled to San Francisco and celebrated Pride with his gay son, Paul (left). I think pancreatic cancer is one of those cancers where when you're diagnosed, you have anywhere from 6 to 24 months. My grandma went in for a routine gallbladder surgery. They basically opened her up and then closed her right back up; she was gone about six months later. I think they can catch it early, but that's rare, and only when they're looking for something else. I thought I read that they're developing an early-detection blood test. It's a horrible cancer.

[quote] After months of rumors and false reports, we finally know where our beloved John Black is. He was indeed injured on the set of "Days of Our Lives" as was confirmed when Drake Hogestyn's legal team released a statement. On May 5th he was doing his own stunt. He had been instructed to run full speed and crash headfirst into a door. The intention was for the door to fling open. However, the prop wasn't set up correctly, When he hit the door at full force head on the door didn't budge. He suffered severe head injuries from this stunt gone wrong. We don't know the full extent of the injuries or any possible long term effects he may suffer.

During the aftermath of Meleswen storyline, when everyone else was reunited with their loved ones, the show deliberately keep Dee and Drake separated.
John was paired with Kate for a while and Marlena had lots of scenes with Roman. Fan outrage helped get them back together.
Shortly after they, Wayne Northrup returned to the show, except this time to play Alex North, revealed to be Marlena's original love.
Not too long after that, show killed off John for a while, only to bring him back to life, but unable to remember his past.

Dee really is a cold hearted bitch. She presented the daytime emmy for best show in maybe 92 or 93. All My Children won. (Which alludes to his DYNASTY role.)

Tough for DAYS though.
They lose Victor, Doug and John within the space of 2 years.
I know Doug hasn't driven story in years but still, he was THE prime male lead of DAYS when my mom watched back in the 70s.

Statement or not, Dee clearly held a special place in her heart. He talked about how much he helped her in 1986 when he was a TV novice starting out. He likely wouldn't have lasted so long in the show if it hadn't been for his part of their "super couple".
Dee made his working life better. Why are some people in here forgetting this just because an old lady isn't rushing to share her grief with the world?

Fun fact: Deirdre Hall is actually ten years younger than what's listed on her bio. Seems when she first came to Hollywood as a young teen she already looked too mature to play characters her age, so her agent told her to add ten years onto her age so she could be cast as women in their 20s. Next thing you knew Deirde is Electra Woman and the rest is history. Unfortunately, she's been slated into people thinking she's ten years older than she actually is. Which also explains why she looks so young. As Deirdre says, "people always think you look great for your age!" LOL!

I didn't see one from any of the black female cast members or either one of the Melinda Trasks. Racism perhaps?
Also Carrie, Anna. Clyde & Johnny are absent as well.
Also not a single Austin actor has weighed in on this matter.

R154 that's a load of tosh. She has an identical twin who is long retired and an old lady. Your version would have Dee as Electra Woman in her teens. Are you saying she was 19 when she started on Days?

She even addresses her age as a career barrier on her autobiographical TV movie, when she auditions but can't get work as a 40ish actress in the late 80s.

Agreed systemic racism has made very few actresses of color are on every day, but this isn’t racism of media coverage.

R158 Folks don't need to share a scene together. They've been on the same show for years = at events like Day Of Days, talk show interviews, charity events, promotional events like the Rafe actor commenting on his trip with Drake to S. Africa several years ago that can be found on YT (with MAGA Nicole).
It's not racism to question why a multi racial show had no other minority actor tributes to a nearly 40 year leading man career except for Paul (at the time) especially when the likes of Genie Francis (who hasn't been a part of the show in ages) made a comment & others who have been on the show since her departure had remained silent.

I saw comments from the actors who play, Abe, Paulina, Eli, Chanel, Lani, Jada, the Asian girl who played Li Shinn's sister, Paul. I also saw a lot of comments from people who are no longer on the show, on other soaps, and people who have moved on to other other things like Mark Valley and Jensen Ackles.

To be fair, Deirdre Hall might be busy organizing one of her famous in-house scene studes with Jaclyn Smith on the regular, wherein the two of them workshop scenes from Inge, Wycherley, and Amiri Baraka at either of their homes and then give one another extensive acting notes. It probably takes a lot of work to do script analysis AND memorize a scene from Baraka's The Toilet...

R168 Wayne and his wife, General Hospital actress, Lynn Herring Northrup, run an historical museum up in Raymond, California. They purchased the property years ago and restored the place. It's something of a tourist attraction as the town of Raymond also has a very active historical society that draws in a lot of tourists who are headed for Yosemite National Park. There are things to see and do there for those who are interested in the old California pioneers who settled the outpost. In 2023, Herring said something about a new project to fix up an old train depot that was nearby.
Wayne, of course, knows what's important and made an appearance when Queen Dee got her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dee wouldn't have to be the one to lead any kind of campaign for something like that to happen. There's already a HUGE fan base who want Queen Dee & King Rob to hook up. It came into existence when Dr. Marlena Evans was treating Ben Weston. Barlena's chemistry together was HAWT and has continued with Marlena and Alex.

They could always reveal that Dr. Rolf has cloned "John Black" or created some kind of offspring of John's in his lab - so we'd eventually have a "Young John" show up as a hot otter with lots of fur on his chest. Young John tries to dismiss the manipulative and controlling Dr. Rolf and sets his sights on winning the beautiful and captivating ingenue Marlena.
Now that Ryan Carnes isn't reprising "Lucas Jones" on General Hospital, he might do.

Ironically, Dee, Susan and Jane were never on Days at the same time. No overlap between any of the three.
Dee was hired in 1976 to play a psychiatrist in the short term while they found someone permanently to replacce Susan as Laura Horton.
Then when Dee left to shoot Our House in 1987, they killed Marlena off in a plane crash. About the same time, Jane Elliot started as Angelica Devereux.
But then Jane was long gone by the time Dee returned as Marlena in 1991.
