Cats in little crocheted hats shed light on feline chronic pain
Canadian scientists are the first to record the electrical activity in the brains of conscious cats. However, the kitties kept shaking off the electrodes, so a student with crocheting skills made these little hats to keep them in place. All for a great cause.
[quote]One-quarter of adult cats suffer from osteoarthritis and chronic pain that worsens with age. There are currently limited treatment options, namely, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which can have significant side effects for the cats. An injectable monoclonal antibody tailored for cats has recently been developed to neutralize excessive nerve growth factor, but other alternative treatment options like supplements and regenerative medicine have yet to be tested. Nor has the effectiveness of certain smells or lighting in altering pain perception in felines been tested.

How can one tell if a cat is suffering from this?

When did all these cats become Mennonites? I love my cat, but there's no way I'm going to paint my car bumpers black and use a wringer washer to do laundry!

You sound unrepentantly mean, r4. And unfunny. I wish unrelenting arthritic pain on you, mean motherfucking cunt. Until you writhe and wish for a steroid injection you will be deprived of.

A friend gives her boxer glucosamine chondroitin for his joints (I take it for my arthritic knees too). I will ask my vet if I can do the same for my cat. He's 8 and at a healthy weight, and I haven't seen signs, but it's probably coming.

I had an elderly male cat who had some hip issue. His vet gave him something off-label (they used it on cats in the UK tho) and the difference was like night and day.

R10, was it meloxicam? Meloxicam fried my friend's cat's kidneys and the poor cat died. Meloxicam I can be amazing and lethal- hence the black box warning in the US.

R4 I wish you a speedy recovery! I am happy I was able to provide a respite of humor for you! My friend has the litter mates of my Siamese Trixie and I bring her over for regular play dates at his house . We are planning to dress them up as the Supremes for Halloween! Finding wigs to fit them has.been challenging! Of course Trixie will be "Diana" . Pictures are forthcoming!!
