Pope gets an earful from Belgian king and abuse victims over scandals and failures to respond

[quote]On a brutal day for the frail and aging Pope Francis, the king of Belgium, its prime minister and the rector of the Catholic university that invited him here all ripped into the institution he heads for a spectrum of sins: for covering up cases of clergy sex abuse and being far behind the times on embracing women and the LGBTQ+ community in the church.

[quote]And that was all before Francis met with the people most harmed by the Catholic Church in Belgium — the men and women who were raped and molested by priests as children. Seventeen abuse survivors spent two hours with Francis on Friday evening, telling him of their trauma, shame and pain and demanding reparations from the church.

I wouldnt want to do poping for a job these days whatever the pay. Non stop scandal covering and crisis management, it'd be exhausting

Something seems to have fundamentally shifted in recent times, no longer is the pope a reverent figure beyond reproach. He's just the CEO of an institution that enables and protects serial rapists. As has been the case since the Middle Ages, but now its power (in the West) has waned to such an extent that we can finally stop pretending and quaking in our boots about blowback when we tell him to clean up his mess.

Pretty rich for a King of the Belgians to complain about widespread abuse of others….

Sensitive subject in Belgium after the Dutroux scandal.

The Pope is on borrowed time. The black or white smoke will rise by June 2025.

R3 thanyou Americans should keep your mouth shut forever.

At lrast they haven't killed all their land and inhabitated it themselves like you did with Native Americans.

by Anonymousreply 7September 28, 2024 7:56 AM

R3 How wrong you are. For the King, and thus the monarchy he embodies, to speak up today is exactly what should he expected from someone whose forefathers gave the orders to what happened in Congo.

It was sarcasm. Get a clue.

It sounds like the Pope deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but not the one we give to the dead suckers. This one is much better. I’m more beautiful and my crowds are larger and any dispute of this is Marxist.
