The encomiums are pouring in from all over the world, with everyone mentioning her Desdemona, Jean Brodie, Judith Hearne, et al. But for me there are many smaller roles in which she shone very early on. I loved her in "The V.I.P.'s" in which she was hopelessly in love with Rod Taylor (like, seriously, who wouldn't be?). Also, be on the lookout for "The Honey Pot," a retelling of Vulpone with Rex Harrison, Cliff Robertson, and Susan Hayward ("Hold onto your crown, Highness, and hold onto your bottle, Lowness!"). But the first time I noticed her was in "Hot Millions" as Patty, a movie which deserves a much higher level of respect. What other movie could boast a cast that featured Dame Maggie, Peter Ustinov, Karl Malden, Bob Newhart, Cesar Romero, AND Robert Morley?
So what is your favorite Dame Maggie small gem?
