They still have some items, but they used to have a chocolate cake that was to die for.
Fat Whores, Do you Remember When Sara Lee had a full line of Desserts?

I hated how the icing would stick to the cover piece of cardboard.

Sara Lee quality was far better ca. 1979 than it is today but the quality of much of our supermarket food has been degraded in the last 45 years.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 27, 2024 3:38 AM |
In the 70s my mom bought the chocolate iced chocolate cakes or the pound cakes. For some reason I didn't like sweets as a kid. But I might have if she had tried just a tad harder. Those cakes were bullshit.

by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 27, 2024 4:09 AM |
My parents left me some cash to go get groceries for dinner once, when I was about 11.
I bought a tin of Sara Lee frosted brownies and was shocked I couldn’t finish it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 27, 2024 4:29 AM |
I remember the frozen chocolate gateau in the 80’s. I’m not sure it’s even sold now in the UK. There are so many fresh and frozen desserts these days in the supermarkets, back then the selection was very small.

I got into middle Eastern food and my mom bought some Sarah Lee pita bread. That was really good.
I liked the original cheesecake (sour cream on top, no fruit), but not the "French" cheesecake with the cherries.

I don’t like that store bought cheesecakes now have a dusting of graham cracker crumps instead of real cracker crumb-butter-sugar baked crust. It was like a cookie And cheesecake. That’s why I buy Edwards key lime pie. Better than cheescake and a real cookie crumb crust.

I remember how good Ms. Lee’s coffee, pound and carrot cakes and deep-dish apple pie were, but for the frozen cakes my mom would get the Pepperidge Farm coconut crème one, half of which I could’ve easily shoved right into my mouth (I recall that being a talent of mine from way back, on an unrelated note anyway).
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 1, 2024 1:33 AM |
When I was younger and had a metabolism and workout routing that could handle it I used to just by a Pepperidge Farms coconut cake and just leave it open on the counter with a fork in it. I could finish it in about two days. Homemade, bakery, whatever, there is no cake better than that one.

There used to be three drag queens at the local drag bar: Sara Lee, Dolly Madison, and Little Debbie. Little Debbie must have weighed 400 pounds.

As a budding fat whore in the 1970s, I was delighted when a Dolly Madison outlet store opened nearby. I remember my mother going in and stocking up on almost expired loaves of Butternut bread, and sacks full of twin-pack snack cakes like Zingers, Koo Koos, Gem donuts, and fruit pies for a dime each. The freezer would be crammed full of sugary goodness for weeks. We all developed an appreciation for frozen-solid snack cakes as we were too impatient to let them thaw.

I don't know anything about Sara Lee, but Pepperidge Farm used to have a delectably toothsome chocolate layer cake—the frosting was foamy and mousse-like.

A hallmark of my family: a Sara Lee cake or danish on the counter, covered in aluminum foil, with a steak knife in the pan so everyone can slice off a chunk on the go.

[quote]r91 My grandfather … helped produce the World's Largest Cherry Pie in Traverse City, Michigan.
An event touched with bitterness and scandal, it seems:
[italic]At the time, the Guinness Book of World Records certified Traverse City’s cherry pie as the largest ever, thereby eclipsing the record set by Charlevoix, a neighboring town, 11 years earlier. But the victory was not without controversy: Charlevoix residents argued that the Traverse City pie lacked a bottom crust and therefore did not count as a full cherry pie.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | October 9, 2024 4:42 AM |
I would have to agree that if there's no bottom crust, that ain't a cherry pie.
