I've wondered why American Masters hasn't done an episode about her. No matter what, she has contributed a great deal in music and film over decades. Her rise has been phenomenal by any measure.

American Masters, probably can't do it without her cooperation. I hope they hustle with this documentary. She is so laborious with every endeavor. She's no spring chicken, notwithstanding that lovely AI image.

Why does she need a multi-part documentary? Even Jane Fonda, who had a much more multifaceted career, managed to capture it all in two and a half hours.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 28, 2024 12:02 AM |
Her appearance on Colbert showed that her mobility is not good. He was almost holding her up as they walked through her garden. A documentary is a good way for her to stay creative, busy and somewhat in the spotlight without leaving the house!

R55 I first witnessed that when Gayle King interviewed her, and they were walking through her 'shopping mall' in her basement - Streisand wasn't to stable on her feet. Something's going on with her - and I said it back then. I doubt we will ever find out.

Frank Marshall says “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Barbra’s incredible life story to the screen. We have been given unprecedented access to archival footage from decades of her groundbreaking career and intimate visibility to the trailblazing she continues to do in life today. Uncovering these remarkable moments illustrate why she has become an enduring icon to a global audience of all generations.

The more material that is released, the more one realizes what a talent she was from the very beginning. The recordings from the Bon Soir are a good example.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 28, 2024 11:59 AM |
R50, Fonda had a more multifaceted career? She did more film than Streisand, yes. But did she go to the top of every show business media, stage, screen, recording, concert and TV. Did she produce, compose, write and direct? Both are incredible philanthropists and liberal activists.
Two amazing women. But I don’t think Streisand has a real peer.

by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 28, 2024 1:34 PM |
R65. I never said Barbra hasn’t had a great career. I’m saying there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be condensed into a two hour movie. A miniseries covering what? It’s going to be akin to what people said about her book, overlong and verbose.
Her fans (like Streisand herself) go overboard, If you really want to be honest, despite breaking records, how much of that work has held up? You could make a succinct movie, and that’s really what it merits.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 28, 2024 1:39 PM |
Folks, Barbra is 82 YEARS OLD. Being shaky on your feet is normal. Elderly people frequently die or begin a fast decline in health after FALLS. She’s smart to hang on to the nearest sure footed person.
I believe this documentary is to compensate for the dismal reaction and low sales of her memoir.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 28, 2024 1:51 PM |
R61, who will publish it? Peters lies more than Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 28, 2024 1:53 PM |
[quote]She actually had a duet with Don Johnson! I bought that CD lol
The duet was the title track from her 1988 album "Till I Loved You" . It also included another duet with him, 'What Were We Thinking Of' . The title track hit #25 on the Hot 100 Singles Chart. The album peaked at #10, and was certified Platinum (1M albums sold). So a lot of people bought that CD, despite the 'mixed' reviews.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 28, 2024 2:11 PM |
I actually like "Till I Loved You." I'm a fan of her musicality, vibrato and timber (it is hard to explain and I am not on the spectrum). This is one of her songs that these things are very apparent.

They had headshots in 1964. Who knew.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 28, 2024 2:25 PM |
She's not hanging onto people because she's 82 and therefore trying to avoid a fall because all 82 year olds are 'shaky'. If that were the case, we'd have our senior politicians on mandatory zimmer frames. Some 82 year olds have health conditions that make them unsteady on their feet. Some 82 year olds are flying about in high heels. She has something - arthritis, balance issues, circulation issues who knows. She didn't avoid in person talk show appearances, signings and Q&As because she couldn't get Jason to cover her shift at the mall. The book sales took a hit because of her lacklustre marketing - and the size of the book and the lack of gossip.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 28, 2024 2:42 PM |
I think whatever she has is neurological, which is affecting her balance / stability. It's quite common in older people.
It's been nearly a year her book was released, and so far no mention of a paperback edition (which is usually released 6- 9 months after a hardcover best-seller). I wouldn't be surprised if the publishers decided to cancel any plans for a PB edition, based on the sales of the hardcover. I'm also curious if the hardcover inventory which is left will be in the 'bargain bins' for this Christmas season.
Currently, Amazon has it marked down to $22 - that's 53% off the cover price of $47. (I paid $35 at Amazon when it was released, pre-bought it in February, 2023).

Producer Alex Gibney also said in the press release that "people have been talking about the need for the definitive documentary on Barbra Streisand for years."
"After a series of wonderful conversations and rigorous research, we are moving forward with Frank Marshall at the helm," he said. "I am delighted to produce this film on Barbra, a legendary singer, extraordinary actor, director, and political activist who inspires us all. Did I forget to mention that she’s a great storyteller who is funny as hell?"

by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 29, 2024 1:58 PM |
R89, someone (lots of people) is encouraging her, and she doesn't have the sense or perspective to understand that they're lying. It reminds me of Robert Redford's hair/wig. He somehow believes it looks good, and no one has the guts to stop him from leaving the house like this. Much younger wife is just waiting for $$$ after death.
