2025 Oscars Best Supporting Actor Predictions

This year’s supporting actor contenders feel a bit thinner than usual, but that could easily change before the Academy finalizes its five nominees. With so many potential contenders still waiting to make their mark, it’s safe to say that surprises could be lurking around the corner.

We’re still waiting on some official category confirmations and first looks for films like Kieran Culkin’s turn in “A Real Pain,” Gabriel LaBelle in “Saturday Night,” and the ever-dynamic Denzel Washington, who’s suiting up for his villainous role in “Gladiator II.” John Magaro and Peter Sarsgaard are also in the mix for their work in “September 5,” depending on where the actors decide to campaign.

In breaking news, Variety can now confirm that both Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, the heartthrobs from Luca Guadagnino’s tennis-throuple love story “Challengers,” have decided to submit as supporting actors. This could add some unexpected heat to the competition. With their palpable chemistry on screen, their double entry might be the spark the supporting actor race needs this year.

Also in the wings is Edward Norton’s performance in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown.” There is no word yet on whether Norton’s portrayal will have the impact we expect, but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on with three previous noms (“Primal Fear,” “American History X” and “Birdman”). Meanwhile, fans of the “Wicked” musical adaptation will be eager to see if Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum can enter the conversation.

In the meantime, Clarence Maclin continues to pop up in the awards discussion for his stellar performance in Greg Kwedar’s prison drama “Sing Sing.” At the same time, we can’t overlook Stanley Tucci, a true veteran, who’s delivering what could be one of his best performances yet in Edward Berger’s thriller “Conclave,” which premiered at Telluride. Tucci’s a familiar face at the Oscars, and the Academy will likely not miss the chance to acknowledge his work.

Then there’s Guy Pearce, whose buzzworthy role in Brady Corbet’s epic “The Brutalist” could remind us why he’s a Hollywood mainstay. With a runtime that spans four hours, it’ll be interesting to see if the Academy’s Actors Branch has the patience (and the time) to appreciate the scale of his performance fully.

Veteran actor John Turturro, who has been overlooked for an Oscar nod despite standout performances in films like “Quiz Show” (1994), could finally find himself in the mix for “The Room Next Door.” Turturro plays Damian, a passionate climate change advocate and former lover to both women in the film (Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton), delivering a climactic scene near the end that could secure his spot in the conversation.

Finally, don’t count out Brian Tyree Henry. Known for bringing depth and emotion to every role he takes on, Henry could land another nomination, this time for his portrayal of Jason Crutchfield, coach to Olympic boxing champion Claressa Shields, in the inspirational film “The Fire Inside.” With past Oscar-nominated boxing coaches like Paul Giamatti in “Cinderella Man” and Burgess Meredith in “Rocky,” Henry could find himself joining the ranks of memorable mentors who received the Academy’s invitation.

As always, the supporting actor category remains unpredictable. With a mix of familiar faces and exciting new contenders, this year is shaping up to be interesting.

I'm so over Denzel Washington and Paul Giamatti.

Let some fresh new faces into the Oscar race, for fuck's sake!

I would love to Kieran Culkin nominated and win. He has far surpassed his famous brother, in terms of his acting career. And he's damned good at it.

Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor would also be exciting to see as nominees, as well as Jonathan Bailey for Wicked.

It's time for a younger generation of Hollywood actors to start making their mark.

Giamatti is not even in the running. He has no films being released this year.

by Anonymousreply 2September 24, 2024 1:15 AM

I'd love to see John Turturro get a nomination. He's been great for decades.

by Anonymousreply 3September 24, 2024 1:20 AM

[quote]as well as Jonathan Bailey for Wicked.

I predict a sure win! What could be a richer part than Fiyero?

Oscars all around for the cast of Wicked!

If Emma Stone can win for "LaLa Land," and Gwyneth Paltrow can win for "Shakespeare in Love," then Jonathan Bailey can win for Wicked.

by Anonymousreply 5September 24, 2024 2:48 AM

Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor both gave great performances in Challengers. Zendaya however did not.

by Anonymousreply 6September 24, 2024 2:49 AM

John Turturro is a name that I haven't heard in ages.

by Anonymousreply 7September 24, 2024 3:48 AM

Actors nominate actors. I like Mike Faist and he was adorable and good in “The Challengers,” but Josh O’Connor gave the best performance in that film by far — if you’d never seen him before you would realize what a fine actor he is just from this, so I think he may get one while Faist gets left out unless the field is thin.

by Anonymousreply 8September 24, 2024 3:51 AM

Would you call Cher an "actor?"

by Anonymousreply 9September 24, 2024 4:15 AM

[quote]If Emma Stone can win for "LaLa Land," and Gwyneth Paltrow can win for "Shakespeare in Love," then Jonathan Bailey can win for Wicked.

Don't give me that Gwyneth Paltrow bullshit--that was more than a quarter century ago, when Harvey Fierstein controlled who won the Oscars. It's no longer that era.

by Anonymousreply 10September 24, 2024 4:20 AM

If Harvey Fierstein controlled who won the Oscars 25 years ago Hollywood would piss rainbows and xanax.

by Anonymousreply 11September 24, 2024 7:48 AM

Harvey Weinstein, R11.

Not Harvey Fierstein.

by Anonymousreply 12September 24, 2024 8:22 AM

[quote]Josh O’Connor gave the best performance in that film by far

He gave one of the best performances of the year in "La Chimera." He won't be nominated for that film as it wasn't a big enough hit, but with that and "Challengers" he became an actor I'll look forward to seeing in anything.

by Anonymousreply 13September 24, 2024 8:37 AM

R13 I agree about Josh O'Connor's performances in La Chimera and Challengers. Unfortunately no matter how critically acclaimed a film may be, if it doesn't reach a level of box office success the film and performances are almost never considered for any Academy Award nominations.

by Anonymousreply 14September 24, 2024 1:38 PM

I can't imagine "Wicked" winning much this time around.

Since there are two parts of a whole (instead of a sequel,) voters are going to take a "wait and see" approach to voting for it.

Why give Bailey or Erivo an award for part one, when they might be even better in part two?

by Anonymousreply 15September 24, 2024 2:28 PM

There's buzz about Adrien Brody in The Brutalist for Best Actor.

by Anonymousreply 16November 9, 2024 12:24 AM

Can we get Fritz Feld nominated, please? It's time he got his due.

by Anonymousreply 17November 9, 2024 12:39 AM

[quote]At the same time, we can’t overlook Stanley Tucci, a true veteran, who’s delivering what could be one of his best performances yet in Edward Berger’s thriller “Conclave,” which premiered at Telluride.

For "Conclave," I think John Lithgow might have better shot at a Best Supporting Actor nod than Tucci. I thought Tucci was the weak link; he didn't have the gravitas needed for the role.

by Anonymousreply 18November 9, 2024 12:43 AM

R6, Mike Faist didn’t even have a character in Challengers. How could he be great?

by Anonymousreply 19November 9, 2024 1:14 AM

R16, the Best Actor statuette is already engraved with Adrien Brody’s name. It’s done.

by Anonymousreply 20November 9, 2024 1:15 AM

Josh O’Connor is so grating, always so pleased with himself. He was just a sweaty goober in Challengers.

by Anonymousreply 21November 9, 2024 1:18 AM

Does Dennis Quaid in The Substance stand a chance?

by Anonymousreply 22November 9, 2024 1:19 AM

I have seen "Room Next Door" and John Turturro's role is three scenes and he does not really stand out. I'd be surprised if he were nominated.

by Anonymousreply 23November 9, 2024 1:21 AM

I think he does, R22. Especially if The Substance over-performs.

by Anonymousreply 24November 9, 2024 1:50 AM

Tucci was fine but the role is really nothing special. I hope they don’t give it to Denzel or Kiernan. I hope Guy Pearce emerges as the dark horse.

As far as Best Actor, I just hope the Academy sees through that bad Bob Dylan impression and snubs Chalamet.

by Anonymousreply 25November 9, 2024 1:55 AM

I preferred John Lithgow’s performance in Conclave to Tucci’s.

Lithgow should have won for his first nomination all the way back for The World According to Garp in 1982.

by Anonymousreply 26November 9, 2024 1:36 PM

I think David Jonsson as Andy in Alien: Romulus should be seriously considered. Truly one of the best performances of the year.

by Anonymousreply 27November 9, 2024 2:11 PM

Jeremy Strong does an amazing job, playing Roy Cohn in “The Apprentice,” definitely worthy of a Supporting nomination.

by Anonymousreply 28November 9, 2024 3:33 PM

Clarence Maclin is my favorite male supporting performance I’ve seen so far. I thought he was phenomenal (playing himself) in Sing Sing.

Haing S. Ngor and Harold Russell winning vibes.

by Anonymousreply 29November 9, 2024 6:54 PM

Just saw The Brutalist. Wow. Guy Pearce is a really great villain in this. There is one pretty shocking scene involving him in the latter third of the film (which is 3 1/2 hours btw!) I can see him winning easily.

by Anonymousreply 30December 8, 2024 5:17 AM

Mike Faust has a sweet hole.

by Anonymousreply 31December 8, 2024 5:35 AM

Faist !

by Anonymousreply 32December 8, 2024 5:36 AM

It's Culkin's to lose

Kieran Culkin Wins Best Supporting Actor at 2024 New York Film Critics Circle Awards for ‘A Real Pain' as well as The National Board of Review

by Anonymousreply 33December 8, 2024 5:43 AM

Jamesh cordon for catsh

by Anonymousreply 34December 8, 2024 8:25 AM

I hope Yura Borisov manages to hold onto his slot, but there are too many "well-liked" actors in the second tier -- Tucci, for example -- that I suspect will bump up when the nominations happen. "Anora" came out too early in the cycle for Borisov to maintain the momentum. Great actor (and weirdly hot).

by Anonymousreply 35December 8, 2024 10:01 AM

I am with R35. Yura Borisov was magnificent. You can see, from the very first time he appears, what is happening to him....it is painful and sweet. It is a magnificent performance, but not the kind that bags trophies. Unfortunately. Culkin was very good also. He plays one of those characters that can get very tiring fast, but there is a beautiful performance there, one that shatters you once the credits roll.

by Anonymousreply 36December 8, 2024 1:54 PM

Is Culkin really that good?

by Anonymousreply 37December 8, 2024 3:36 PM

I would be floored if Jonathan Bailey is nominated for "Wicked." He sings well and he's pretty--that's it.

by Anonymousreply 38December 8, 2024 4:27 PM

I think Culkin really is that good R37. And R38 I hope he does not get a nomination....but I am hoping that the Wicked publicity machine backfires. It is a good movie but not a great movie. And, besides, we have only seen one half.

by Anonymousreply 39December 8, 2024 9:51 PM

Best Supporting Performance, Winners: Yura Borisov, ANORA, and Kieran Culkin, A REAL PAIN #LAFCA The LA film Critics Association are listening to us

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 40December 8, 2024 9:57 PM

Culkin will probably not win as The Brutalist is being pushed out of categories where it was once thought to be frontrunner by Wicked (picture, director and actor) Support Actor for Pearce is the safest award to ensure it wins something.

by Anonymousreply 41December 8, 2024 9:58 PM

Also, the Critics Associations threw out their prognostication powers long ago in favor of DEI (LAFCA now awards two Performances for Lead and Support each, plus two runners up.)

This year, all four lead performance awards went to women, meaning no man gave a better performance in lead than Mikey Madison, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres.

by Anonymousreply 42December 8, 2024 10:05 PM

I am starting to hate Wicked. I thought the movie was fine but enough.

by Anonymousreply 43December 8, 2024 10:12 PM

So ridiculous Culkin should be in lead.

by Anonymousreply 44December 8, 2024 10:12 PM

Denzel actually has not enough screen time for lead and the pathos of his role. And there is precedence. Anthony Hamilton in Silence.

by Anonymousreply 45December 8, 2024 10:16 PM

R15 I disagree. I think they are going to give it to Eviro. The film made all that bank while the industry is struggling. And she is a phenomenal actress, even outside this genre, yet can sing like Aretha Franklin or something. The election also is going to tap into people’s psyche.

by Anonymousreply 46December 8, 2024 10:20 PM

I nominate Josh O’Connor if only for the delicious pendulous dong.

by Anonymousreply 47December 8, 2024 10:24 PM

Don’t know about that, R46. Would be good for ratings though.

by Anonymousreply 48December 8, 2024 11:22 PM

I really liked A Real Pain. Eisenberg is a good filmmaker, as writer and director. And actor.

I loved the way all his characters had their own voices. And the way the narrative of the film is set up as a trip they’re making for their grandmother and the drama with Culkin just reveals itself in contrast to everybody else on screen. There’s so much that is unspoken, y’know, until Eisenberg reveals all in that monologue. But you can appreciate his needs to, that he needs to talk to someone about it.

The Culkin character seems distantly related to Christine Lahti’s character in Housekeeping.

by Anonymousreply 49December 8, 2024 11:27 PM

Are the two guys from Challengers really supporting players? The whole film revolves around their relationship/rivalry.

by Anonymousreply 50December 8, 2024 11:28 PM

The GG noms:

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Yura Borisov, “Anora”

Kieran Culkin, “A Real Pain” (Searchlight Pictures)

Edward Norton, “A Complete Unknown”

Guy Pearce, “The Brutalist” (A24)

Jeremy Strong, “The Apprentice” (Briarcliff Entertainment)

Denzel Washington, “Gladiator II” (Paramount Pictures)
