I'm an '80s baby, and though I'd heard of the show all of my life, I never actually watched THREE's COMPANY until recently. Within the past year. And I really enjoy it. Janet is my favorite.

But, boy, was John Ritter eye candy!

by Anonymousreply 4September 20, 2024 4:36 PM

John Ritter was never eye candy.

Handsome face in the close-ups.

And a nice ass!

Joyce DeWitt: "I'm not angry, DAMMIT!"

by Anonymousreply 13September 20, 2024 8:12 PM

John Ritter was adorable with warm eyes.

As a kid I enjoyed the character of Janet but found her to be physically unappealing in a way I didn't normally with women on TV. I think it was the bug eyes and the haircut.

On the flip side, Chrissy was interesting to watch but I resented her stupidity.

It's funny, I never picked up on the "Jack faking homosexuality" bit. I was too young to understand, but not too young to understand that Jack was the most watchable of all.

by Anonymousreply 14September 20, 2024 8:12 PM

Wow I don’t think she mentioned farce once. Good job, Joyce!

by Anonymousreply 19September 21, 2024 12:27 AM

R5 - I agree - I never understood why he was considered 'the star' - he did nothing for me and I thought he was average in the role. There were 3 people in that apartment - it wasn't all about him.

But I feel for her - it must have been hard being the overlooked 3rd person behind Ritter and Somers.

by Anonymousreply 20September 21, 2024 12:31 AM

I’m surprised she never got even one regular role on another show.

by Anonymousreply 21September 21, 2024 12:37 AM

Why is she wearing one of Estelle Getty's cheap old white wigs from "The Golden Girls"?

by Anonymousreply 22September 21, 2024 12:41 AM

R20 Well, I'm the last of the original three still alive, so who got the last laugh?

by Anonymousreply 23September 21, 2024 12:46 AM

Why be angry? Surely, she's receiving residuals after all this time still? Even though she was the "third wheel," she did a good job in her role.

I, too, am surprised she never really got much after that.

by Anonymousreply 24September 21, 2024 12:48 AM

There was no 'She's the Sheriff" for Joyce, R74.

by Anonymousreply 25September 21, 2024 12:52 AM

[quote]I’m surprised she never got even one regular role on another show.

She left Hollywood for over a decade after the show ended. By the time she came back in the mid 90's, the TV landscape had changed drastically.

If you read the Three's Company Book (which is one of the best backstage accounts of a TV show ever done) Joyce admits she didn't have the stomach to deal with the internal politics surrounding Three's Company and TV shows in general. She loathed the producers (she even admits Suzanne had valid concerns concerning the show she just dealt with it poorly) and was deeply hurt that they didn't tell Priscilla and her until the last minute that the finale would be a backdoor pilot for John Ritter's spinoff. She was much more comfortable doing theater.

by Anonymousreply 26September 21, 2024 12:55 AM

[quote]”…the many, many adults who have told me that Three’s Company was a safe haven they could count on during their teen years — for some, the only safe haven.”

She should do a comeback series called “Gramma’s House.” She plays Lolo, a former showgirl turned madam who runs a cozy brothel out of her home in Las Vegas.

(The reason she was a showgirl is it leaves room for occasional dance numbers)

He's the main protagonist, and in almost every episode, the "A" plot revolves around him.

He was also the only cast member to be Emmy-nominated (3 nods, 1 win).

by Anonymousreply 40September 21, 2024 4:00 AM

John was handsome but rather sexless. The Ropers were the reason I watched. Don Knotts was ok during the replacement Chrissey years

by Anonymousreply 41September 21, 2024 4:50 AM

The producers were cheapskates and just hired the cheapest actors available. Suzanne was already in her 30s.

by Anonymousreply 42September 21, 2024 4:56 AM

She said in the article "friends and cast members" at one point.

Why say that?

Was it a subtle dig at deceased Somers?

by Anonymousreply 43September 21, 2024 5:13 AM

Ritter was rather charming and handsome when THREE'S COMPANY competed against SOAP on FAMILY FEUD.

Joyce looked pretty, too.

by Anonymousreply 44September 21, 2024 5:27 AM

They certainly could have gotten more than one season of the spinoff if they had paired Jack and Janet as the leads.

Of course they could pay the female lead much less than Joyce at that point and they thought they had a sure thing at a much cheaper price. But it did cost them in the end for the loss of those extra seasons

by Anonymousreply 45September 21, 2024 6:17 AM

I loved Joyce DeWitt in the first and second season of Three’s Company. It was a fun, sometimes touching, well-balanced cast of types: level-headed Janet, naive Chrissy, and comedic Jack. Then around season three, DeWitt made Janet cutesy and silly, with a horrible baby voice, and huge, bug-eyed double takes, which sort of clashed with the dumbed downed Chrissy. It was as though she was desperately trying to compete with her co-stars for laughs, and the balance was gone. By the time the wretched Priscilla Barnes came along, Janet and Terri sounded like hyperactive chipmunks, playing to the cheap seats, like Ritter did from the beginning. Add the desperation of Don Knotts, and it was a predictable, horrible mess.

by Anonymousreply 46September 21, 2024 6:18 AM

R46 Level-headed is boring on a sit-com.

Guest stars can play that role.

by Anonymousreply 47September 21, 2024 6:20 AM

She always looks like an exasperated or hysterical Muppet. The jerky movements, the big eyes, the mouth often gaped open….

I think we can all picture Jim Henson’s fist up her ass, can’t we?

by Anonymousreply 49September 21, 2024 6:53 AM

Later in the run Joyce did a photo session with glamour photographer Harry Langdon, and the results are so… mmmmm, what ARE they?

They’re kind of pin-upy, but she’s not the pin-up type!

R46 nevertheless, the show remained very popular for most of its 8-season run:

SEASON 1 = #11

SEASON 2 = #3

SEASON 3 = #2

SEASON 4 = #2

SEASON 5: #8

SEASON 6 = #4

SEASON 7 = #6

SEASON 8 = #33

by Anonymousreply 52September 21, 2024 12:57 PM

A lot of people got shafted on that show - including the Ropers, who were pushed to have their own series and then never allowed back.

Then they did the same to Joyce and Priscilla when they decided to move John to his own horrible show.

Like her or not, Suzanne Somers was HUGE - she was at the peak of her beauty and you waited for her to come on camera. She was everywhere - extremely popular. She SHOULD have been paid the same as John.

Joyce - unfortunately - was a bit forgettable in between those two. But people who play the 'straight man' always get overlooked.

[quote]Like her or not, Suzanne Somers was HUGE - she was at the peak of her beauty and you waited for her to come on camera. She was everywhere - extremely popular. She SHOULD have been paid the same as John.

They all should have been paid equally. Threes was very much an ensemble show even though John Ritter got the same plaudits. Suzanne was not as indispensable as she made out for all the years after. The ratings were still solid during three of the four years afterwards.

Suzanne was also popular because she had a great PR agent, who was also handling Farrah Fawcett at the same time during the height of her Charlie's Angels fame. Ritter was popular because he was charming and talented. There's a huge difference.

by Anonymousreply 55September 21, 2024 7:03 PM

Joyce outlived all of the original cast.

by Anonymousreply 56September 21, 2024 7:12 PM

It's hard to believe now but Three's Company was controversial during its original run, particularly in the first few seasons. It was considered quite raunchy for the times.

R58 - first, it was considered highly unusual for unmarried men and women to be living together - actually immoral. That line of thinking was still around in the 80's.

Then you have a gay man - but not ACTUALLY a gay man - which was also not done before.

I don't think there was THAT much sexuality - but a lot of single bars, picking up chicks kind of jokes.

I remember there was a butterfly pic on the back wall and in the middle of the butterfly was a naked woman - THAT was talked about endlessly in school. LOL

Incidentally, "Problem Child" starring John Ritter is currently free to watch on YouTube, which I recently did for the first time in like decades, and I was surprised to learn (after looking up the cast) that the bitchy girl whose birthday party Junior ruins was played by Kline's own daughter.

The fact that Joyce never got a series after Three's Company is as baffling to me as the fact that neither did Bonnie Franklin. Joyce was a member of an ensemble and from what I understand left Hollywood and went to India to address her demons. Bonnie stayed in L.A. and yet was still not offered anything. I could see either Joyce or Bonnie as the mom on The Wonder Years, Alf, or Mr. Belvedere but for some reason it didn't happen...

This sounds fantastic. It could be funded jointly by the Screen Actors Guild and the Motion Picture & Television Fund Retirement Home, to generate income (and visibility) for elderly members.

I see Nancy Dussault as Joyce’s arch enemy, a much married mantrap named Dahlia “Doll” Wentworth.

by Anonymousreply 75September 21, 2024 11:43 PM

R75 Priscilla Barnes will make some guest appearances. As a nurse, she can run the trailer park vaccination clinics, giving Janet a sounding board.

by Anonymousreply 76September 21, 2024 11:51 PM

Bonnie Franklin and Joyce DeWitt were both sexless hammy Muppets prone to rage issues.

They were both deeply unpleasant and uncharismatic, and the only reasonable explanation for their inexplicable stardom is they shared the same agent, who was blackmailing Fred Silverman.

Redd Foxx in a wig and a muumuu had a better chance playing the mother on Alf, Wonder Years and Mr. Belvedere than those two hambones.

by Anonymousreply 77September 21, 2024 11:55 PM

I'd like to buy her for what she's worth and sell her for what she thinks she's worth. She always seemed to think she was a THESPIAN and not just some hack on a sitcom. At least Suzanne knew who she was. The shows without Chrissy suck.

by Anonymousreply 78September 21, 2024 11:55 PM

Oh I loved Mr. Belvedere.

by Anonymousreply 79September 21, 2024 11:57 PM

Joyce's lack of a career is especially egregious since Bonnie had fried egg titties, while Joyce was a full-breasted woman in her prime.

by Anonymousreply 80September 21, 2024 11:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 81September 22, 2024 12:05 AM

Please tell me you're kidding - they were terrible actresses with zero charm. I'm surprised they had as much success as they did - totally lucked out on that one show.

by Anonymousreply 82September 22, 2024 12:05 AM

Man, you people are so negative.

I think everyone on THREE'S COMPANY was great.

It was a slapstick situational comedy, for God's sakes!

But you could tell that everyone was a good actor.

by Anonymousreply 83September 22, 2024 4:00 AM

[quote] I could see either Joyce or Bonnie as the mom on The Wonder Years

The mom on Wonder Years really didn't look like the mom of Kevin and the brother.

Bonnie Franklin: no way could she have been the mom on Wonder Years.

Joyce De Witt: possibly, physically, could have been the mom.

[quote]It's hard to believe now but Three's Company was controversial during its original run, particularly in the first few seasons. It was considered quite raunchy for the times.

And Lucille Ball loved the show - go figure. She hated all the Norman Lear comedies because she felt they were too 'raunchy' (especially 'Maude') , but loved 'Three's Company' and its humor. Then again, maybe she hated the Lear comedies because they were on CBS, and the way of the 'future' in the 70s - pushing her tired slapstick ("Here's Lucy") off the air ?

by Anonymousreply 85September 22, 2024 4:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 86September 22, 2024 4:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 112September 22, 2024 9:23 PM

The thing about sexual harassment is you can’t look at it through the lense of how the treatment would make YOU feel - that’s irrelevant.

The wardrobe lady was asked out again and again by the two teen actors (Fred Savage and Jason Hervey) after she made it clear her answer was no… and the dad actor even told her she should let Savage lose his virginity to her.

Some people don’t like sexual pressure like this at work. It’s odd some people (like Ms. Mills) can’t grasp that. She also might not know what it’s like for a wardrobe person to be pressured by the star of a show who (practically speaking) has power over their job and makes a hundred times (?) more than them.

It’s an issue of power and control and continues to be! People can say what they want, but the truth has always been public record in the complaint and all the documents and depositions filed with the courts. If anyone wants the truth of what happened, they can read it there. To this day, I stand by the truth in those documents. . . My only response to Ms. Mills’s slander is that it proves exactly why women in the industry are forced to remain silent about sexual harassment.”

Alley was working in Hollywood in the 1970s - The Waltons, Barefoot in the Park (the series), The Leslie Uggams Show.

She probably turned down the role of Janet on Three’s Company.

And Joyce can never forgive her for that.

I don't think people can realize now what a huge deal Joyce and Ray Buktenica were back in the day. Think Brangelina, but on steoids! The papparazzi were merciless and wouldn't leave them alone. Everyone was waiting to find out when they would tie the knot and I think the publicity just became too much of a strain on their relationship and they broke it off. But for a while there in 1979, the world could not get enough of "Joytenica" as they were referred to in the tabloids!

I discovered Threes Company in the late 80s. The look of it already seemed more dated than old black and white movies for some reason...but it really made me and my sister roll around laughing. We loved it. We adored Chrissy and Jack and Janet was seen as a bit sensible..but the mix was gold. Only decades later did we learn of the controversies with Suzanne and I dont know how they couldnt sort it out..I still actually feel cheated by that. And as for Audra Lindly and Norman Fell as The Ropers, they were exquisite. I also feel annoyed at how they were mistreated. Mr Furley was fun but I wished he had been an addition and not a replacement for Stanley and Helen.

[quote]I laugh about it but what they did to the Ropers was pretty shady.

Yeah, if I recall, they both did *not* want to do the spin-off. They were content being on THREE'S COMPANY, which was steady work at their age and was the #2 show in America.

But the powers that be made them do it and it flopped, but Audra Lindley and Norman Fell could not return to TC, because they had been replaced with Don Knotts. One is cheaper than two.

It's sort of funny because when something like that happens, it's usually the actor who *wants* to leave to pursue a film career, à la George Cooney ("ER"), and people usually take delight when they fail, à la Shelley Long ("Cheers") and David Caruso ("NYPD Blue") to list two classic examples.

But it's hard to have schadenfreude for Lindley and Fell, because they did not ask for it.

by Anonymousreply 191September 24, 2024 4:36 AM

Joyce should have let Johnny Carson fuck her. She might have become the 4th Mrs.Carson and could have Johnny blackballl John and Suzanne from NBC; while spending Johnny’s millions unwisely producing questionable projects for herself.

Valerie harper did not want to spin-off into 'Rhoda' fifty years ago. It was veteran actress Nancy Walker (who went to the spin-off with her) who sat down with her and told her bluntly, "Are you crazy ? If you refuse this, you will never get an offer to headline your own sitcom again. You will have a reputation of being 'difficult' to work with, and your career will be over. Take the offer - but make sure you can come back here (TMTS) if the series fails."

And Harper took her advice, and had it written into her contract that if her series failed while TMTMS was still in production, she could return to TMTMS (and Mary herself wrote a letter saying the same). Harper had an instant hit series, and she always made sure Walker was used in as many episodes as Walker wanted as a thank you to her TV mother. And when Walker left in season 3 to try her own hand at a sitcom, Harper extended the same offer to her - if the show failed, she was always welcome back to 'Rhoda' (which she did return to in Season 4).

As many of you know, Nancy Walker played Sophia's sister Angela on two episodes of THE GOLDEN GIRLS (1985-1992).

There's a misconception that Walker was replaced with Bill Dana (as Sophia's brother Angelo) because she had died.

In fact, what happened was, Susan Harris created a sitcom for her called MAMA's BOY (1987-1988) which had a troubled production and was unceremoniously canceled by NBC.

By then, Dana's Angelo had become a recurring character on GG.

So, Walker then went on to star on the Fox sitcom TRUE COLORS (1990-1992) which ended after 2 seasons, because two of its main stars (Walker and Cleavon Little) died within months of each other in 1992.

They Edith Bunkered Chrissy. At the start she looked completely different and her voice was much lower. Wasn't even dumb. She was much, much prettier in a classic sense.

Joyce never lowered herself to getting finger fucked in the Bellagio fountains like that trashy Suzanne!

by Anonymousreply 261September 26, 2024 5:14 AM

R261. No, Joyce just got anal behind the Mirage volcano. When that erupted, so did she...

by Anonymousreply 262September 26, 2024 5:20 AM

Joyce dropped by Suzanne’s house unannounced to borrow $50.

R263. Suzanne wasn't looking good there. Emmett Kelly applied his makeup with more finesse.

Anyone own this record as a young galling?

by Anonymousreply 266September 27, 2024 6:26 PM

r265 That's a comic book, not a record. Records never cost 12 cents.

by Anonymousreply 267September 27, 2024 6:32 PM

What is it about her that's so 'off' looking - she's not ugly at all

Joyce was dating an actor named Ray Butkenica (sp?) who allegedly abused her verbally and physically…he was on some lousy CBS sitcom.

by Anonymousreply 269September 27, 2024 7:04 PM

R268. I'd say it's her tits.

by Anonymousreply 270September 27, 2024 7:27 PM

If Joyce was an assassin, Suzanne would've been dead decades ago R265.

by Anonymousreply 271September 27, 2024 8:40 PM

Joyce had hoped to stage a comeback as Bond girl Elektra King in "The World is Not Enough," but in the end the producers opted for Sophie Marceau instead. She said she was devastated when she got the news, but, being a pro and a trouper, still went on to perform in the matinee of "A Streetcar Named Desire," with Ray as Stanley, at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater.

by Anonymousreply 272September 27, 2024 9:29 PM

Joyce will host a morning show this Fall called, "Joyce To The World" on the MySpace Network.

R273. Joyce is starting to look like Lizsha!

by Anonymousreply 275September 28, 2024 8:33 AM

Joyce was decidedly more attractive than any of the blond roommates.

But in this pic, she has that weird look on her face. And I prefer her with the raven hair.

by Anonymousreply 276September 28, 2024 2:37 PM

I never liked John Ritter, and found him annoying and overrated.

by Anonymousreply 277September 28, 2024 3:05 PM

r277 Same

John Ritter looks like he had a lot of makeup on in that photo (R279).

by Anonymousreply 280September 28, 2024 5:23 PM

Joyce always reminds me of a yappy dog. Her nervous energy is very offputting.

by Anonymousreply 281September 28, 2024 5:26 PM

Imagine having the same hairstyle for 60 years.

by Anonymousreply 282September 28, 2024 5:29 PM

Same hairstyle works for me.

R282 I can't type Liza so I'll leave it to the Liza troll to come on and comment.

Schame hairschtyle!

by Anonymousreply 285September 28, 2024 7:04 PM

Three'sh Company wash marveloush. I ushed to get high and watch it with Halshton before we went to Shtudio!

by Anonymousreply 286September 28, 2024 7:06 PM

I absolutely hated John Ritter until Hooperman. He wasn't bad when he acted like an adult and he had a great supporting cast. Hooperman was a great, underrated show.

Hooperman was a great show that never got the audience it deserved.

I remember when I first saw Barbara Bosson show up as Hooperman's boss, I thought to myself, those lips have tasted pussy.

R279 remember the episode where Janet bought a blonde wig and it went to her head, because all the guys began noticing her, so she started acting like a bitch to everyone?

by Anonymousreply 291September 28, 2024 7:47 PM

she did look better.

by Anonymousreply 292September 28, 2024 7:49 PM

John's hair looks fantastic there--it has much more body and styling than usual! Sorry, blondie, but your ratty wig can't compete.

by Anonymousreply 293September 28, 2024 8:08 PM

John just spoke with the voice of a gay 14 year old. That's what was annoying about him.

by Anonymousreply 294September 28, 2024 8:26 PM

Joyce realizes now that she still bears a grudge

by Anonymousreply 297September 28, 2024 9:31 PM

Joyce was a horrible actress - so very schooled and technique-oriented, but couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, as they say.

by Anonymousreply 298September 28, 2024 10:53 PM

R298. Fuck you! You obviously never saw my 1995 vehicle "Spring Fling!"! The plot taken from Wikipedia:

Teacher, has taken her class on an excursion in Los Angeles. Problems begin when they get lost and the hotel they were supposed to stay at loses their reservations. After driving around they end up in an empty hotel.

The End, Bitch!

by Anonymousreply 299September 28, 2024 11:52 PM

she has surprised Pikachu face.

by Anonymousreply 300September 29, 2024 2:59 AM

R298 I disagree.

I stated above that I watched the series for the firs time this year, and I think she's great.

Everyone in the cast was great.

Much better acting than what we see these days, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 301September 29, 2024 6:04 AM

Janet's flower shop was a mafia front. She ran hookers and blow out of that place. It's why Chrissy hated her, because Chrissy was too dumb and virginal to work as one of Janet's whores.

by Anonymousreply 302September 29, 2024 6:25 AM

Does anybody think that Janet's manic energy of later seasons might have been the consequence of some "performance enhancing drugs"?

by Anonymousreply 303September 29, 2024 6:41 AM

That show really must have been an awfully stupid environment to be trapped in all those years. Maybe Joyce disappeared after it ended because her brain rotted.

by Anonymousreply 304September 29, 2024 7:39 AM

[quote]Does anybody think that Janet's manic energy of later seasons might have been the consequence of some "performance enhancing drugs"?

Booze and dope!

by Anonymousreply 305September 29, 2024 7:44 AM

It was the ‘80s and I am sure she and Ritter were doing coke at least occasionally.
