John Ritter was adorable with warm eyes.

On the flip side, Chrissy was interesting to watch but I resented her stupidity.

[quote]I’m surprised she never got even one regular role on another show.
She left Hollywood for over a decade after the show ended. By the time she came back in the mid 90's, the TV landscape had changed drastically.
If you read the Three's Company Book (which is one of the best backstage accounts of a TV show ever done) Joyce admits she didn't have the stomach to deal with the internal politics surrounding Three's Company and TV shows in general. She loathed the producers (she even admits Suzanne had valid concerns concerning the show she just dealt with it poorly) and was deeply hurt that they didn't tell Priscilla and her until the last minute that the finale would be a backdoor pilot for John Ritter's spinoff. She was much more comfortable doing theater.

They certainly could have gotten more than one season of the spinoff if they had paired Jack and Janet as the leads.
Of course they could pay the female lead much less than Joyce at that point and they thought they had a sure thing at a much cheaper price. But it did cost them in the end for the loss of those extra seasons
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 21, 2024 6:17 AM |
I loved Joyce DeWitt in the first and second season of Three’s Company. It was a fun, sometimes touching, well-balanced cast of types: level-headed Janet, naive Chrissy, and comedic Jack. Then around season three, DeWitt made Janet cutesy and silly, with a horrible baby voice, and huge, bug-eyed double takes, which sort of clashed with the dumbed downed Chrissy. It was as though she was desperately trying to compete with her co-stars for laughs, and the balance was gone. By the time the wretched Priscilla Barnes came along, Janet and Terri sounded like hyperactive chipmunks, playing to the cheap seats, like Ritter did from the beginning. Add the desperation of Don Knotts, and it was a predictable, horrible mess.

A lot of people got shafted on that show - including the Ropers, who were pushed to have their own series and then never allowed back.
Then they did the same to Joyce and Priscilla when they decided to move John to his own horrible show.
Like her or not, Suzanne Somers was HUGE - she was at the peak of her beauty and you waited for her to come on camera. She was everywhere - extremely popular. She SHOULD have been paid the same as John.
Joyce - unfortunately - was a bit forgettable in between those two. But people who play the 'straight man' always get overlooked.

They all should have been paid equally. Threes was very much an ensemble show even though John Ritter got the same plaudits. Suzanne was not as indispensable as she made out for all the years after. The ratings were still solid during three of the four years afterwards.
Suzanne was also popular because she had a great PR agent, who was also handling Farrah Fawcett at the same time during the height of her Charlie's Angels fame. Ritter was popular because he was charming and talented. There's a huge difference.

Bonnie Franklin and Joyce DeWitt were both sexless hammy Muppets prone to rage issues.
They were both deeply unpleasant and uncharismatic, and the only reasonable explanation for their inexplicable stardom is they shared the same agent, who was blackmailing Fred Silverman.
Redd Foxx in a wig and a muumuu had a better chance playing the mother on Alf, Wonder Years and Mr. Belvedere than those two hambones.

And Lucille Ball loved the show - go figure. She hated all the Norman Lear comedies because she felt they were too 'raunchy' (especially 'Maude') , but loved 'Three's Company' and its humor. Then again, maybe she hated the Lear comedies because they were on CBS, and the way of the 'future' in the 70s - pushing her tired slapstick ("Here's Lucy") off the air ?

by Anonymous | reply 112 | September 22, 2024 9:23 PM |
The thing about sexual harassment is you can’t look at it through the lense of how the treatment would make YOU feel - that’s irrelevant.
The wardrobe lady was asked out again and again by the two teen actors (Fred Savage and Jason Hervey) after she made it clear her answer was no… and the dad actor even told her she should let Savage lose his virginity to her.
Some people don’t like sexual pressure like this at work. It’s odd some people (like Ms. Mills) can’t grasp that. She also might not know what it’s like for a wardrobe person to be pressured by the star of a show who (practically speaking) has power over their job and makes a hundred times (?) more than them.

[quote]Monique Long responded to Mills in an e-mail to Yahoo!, saying that she still stands by her claims of harassment. “What I will say at this time is that, back then, claiming sexual harassment was NOT popular nor acceptable in Hollywood,” Long wrote. “Now, all these years later, the truth about the dark side of Hollywood and the rampant prevalence of sexual harassment in the industry is out. It’s an issue of power and control and continues to be! People can say what they want, but the truth has always been public record in the complaint and all the documents and depositions filed with the courts. If anyone wants the truth of what happened, they can read it there. To this day, I stand by the truth in those documents. . . My only response to Ms. Mills’s slander is that it proves exactly why women in the industry are forced to remain silent about sexual harassment.”

Alley was working in Hollywood in the 1970s - The Waltons, Barefoot in the Park (the series), The Leslie Uggams Show.
She probably turned down the role of Janet on Three’s Company.

I don't think people can realize now what a huge deal Joyce and Ray Buktenica were back in the day. Think Brangelina, but on steoids! The papparazzi were merciless and wouldn't leave them alone. Everyone was waiting to find out when they would tie the knot and I think the publicity just became too much of a strain on their relationship and they broke it off. But for a while there in 1979, the world could not get enough of "Joytenica" as they were referred to in the tabloids!

I discovered Threes Company in the late 80s. The look of it already seemed more dated than old black and white movies for some reason...but it really made me and my sister roll around laughing. We loved it. We adored Chrissy and Jack and Janet was seen as a bit sensible..but the mix was gold. Only decades later did we learn of the controversies with Suzanne and I dont know how they couldnt sort it out..I still actually feel cheated by that. And as for Audra Lindly and Norman Fell as The Ropers, they were exquisite. I also feel annoyed at how they were mistreated. Mr Furley was fun but I wished he had been an addition and not a replacement for Stanley and Helen.

Yeah, if I recall, they both did *not* want to do the spin-off. They were content being on THREE'S COMPANY, which was steady work at their age and was the #2 show in America.
But the powers that be made them do it and it flopped, but Audra Lindley and Norman Fell could not return to TC, because they had been replaced with Don Knotts. One is cheaper than two.
It's sort of funny because when something like that happens, it's usually the actor who *wants* to leave to pursue a film career, à la George Cooney ("ER"), and people usually take delight when they fail, à la Shelley Long ("Cheers") and David Caruso ("NYPD Blue") to list two classic examples.
But it's hard to have schadenfreude for Lindley and Fell, because they did not ask for it.

Valerie harper did not want to spin-off into 'Rhoda' fifty years ago. It was veteran actress Nancy Walker (who went to the spin-off with her) who sat down with her and told her bluntly, "Are you crazy ? If you refuse this, you will never get an offer to headline your own sitcom again. You will have a reputation of being 'difficult' to work with, and your career will be over. Take the offer - but make sure you can come back here (TMTS) if the series fails."
And Harper took her advice, and had it written into her contract that if her series failed while TMTMS was still in production, she could return to TMTMS (and Mary herself wrote a letter saying the same). Harper had an instant hit series, and she always made sure Walker was used in as many episodes as Walker wanted as a thank you to her TV mother. And when Walker left in season 3 to try her own hand at a sitcom, Harper extended the same offer to her - if the show failed, she was always welcome back to 'Rhoda' (which she did return to in Season 4).

As many of you know, Nancy Walker played Sophia's sister Angela on two episodes of THE GOLDEN GIRLS (1985-1992).
There's a misconception that Walker was replaced with Bill Dana (as Sophia's brother Angelo) because she had died.
In fact, what happened was, Susan Harris created a sitcom for her called MAMA's BOY (1987-1988) which had a troubled production and was unceremoniously canceled by NBC.
By then, Dana's Angelo had become a recurring character on GG.
So, Walker then went on to star on the Fox sitcom TRUE COLORS (1990-1992) which ended after 2 seasons, because two of its main stars (Walker and Cleavon Little) died within months of each other in 1992.

And then Jack called Mrs. Roper and Mrs. Roper came down to the apartment and lifted up her caftan and her red Jewfrow matched her red Jewfro pussy and she was like "Hey Janet do you want to lick this? And Janet was like "my two fingers are already wet with my pussy juice so how about it?"
And Mrs. Roper was like "can I be your mommy? You know I can."
And Janet was like "come and knock on my door! And by my door I mean my FUCKING CLIT! LICK IT YOU OLD CUNT, LICK IT!"
And then, after eating and licking Janet's red and engorged pussy, with a pussy juice mustache dripping down Mrs. Roper's chin and running down her tits, shen said "one month of free rent for you and that FAG you live with!"

I loved Suzanne's test photos for Playboy from back in the day, where she was nothing but a mural of enormous tan lines and bush!
by Anonymous | reply 256 | September 26, 2024 1:36 AM |
Plus Suzanne had awful legs. Worse than Kristen Stewart’s or CZJ’s.

Hi Joyce @ R257

Here’s her side of it (though I wouldn’t trust her as far as I could throw her)
by Anonymous | reply 259 | September 26, 2024 2:17 AM |
They Edith Bunkered Chrissy. At the start she looked completely different and her voice was much lower. Wasn't even dumb. She was much, much prettier in a classic sense.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | September 26, 2024 2:19 AM |
Joyce never lowered herself to getting finger fucked in the Bellagio fountains like that trashy Suzanne!
by Anonymous | reply 261 | September 26, 2024 5:14 AM |
R261. No, Joyce just got anal behind the Mirage volcano. When that erupted, so did she...
by Anonymous | reply 262 | September 26, 2024 5:20 AM |
Joyce dropped by Suzanne’s house unannounced to borrow $50.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | September 26, 2024 5:35 AM |
R263. Suzanne wasn't looking good there. Emmett Kelly applied his makeup with more finesse.
by Anonymous | reply 264 | September 26, 2024 3:30 PM |
Anyone own this record as a young galling?
by Anonymous | reply 265 | September 27, 2024 6:19 PM |
OMG - what’s THAT ? ?
by Anonymous | reply 266 | September 27, 2024 6:26 PM |
r265 That's a comic book, not a record. Records never cost 12 cents.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | September 27, 2024 6:32 PM |
What is it about her that's so 'off' looking - she's not ugly at all
by Anonymous | reply 268 | September 27, 2024 6:33 PM |
Joyce was dating an actor named Ray Butkenica (sp?) who allegedly abused her verbally and physically…he was on some lousy CBS sitcom.
by Anonymous | reply 269 | September 27, 2024 7:04 PM |
R268. I'd say it's her tits.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | September 27, 2024 7:27 PM |
If Joyce was an assassin, Suzanne would've been dead decades ago R265.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | September 27, 2024 8:40 PM |
Joyce had hoped to stage a comeback as Bond girl Elektra King in "The World is Not Enough," but in the end the producers opted for Sophie Marceau instead. She said she was devastated when she got the news, but, being a pro and a trouper, still went on to perform in the matinee of "A Streetcar Named Desire," with Ray as Stanley, at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater.

Joyce will host a morning show this Fall called, "Joyce To The World" on the MySpace Network.

r273 Bless her heart
by Anonymous | reply 274 | September 28, 2024 2:43 AM |
R273. Joyce is starting to look like Lizsha!
by Anonymous | reply 275 | September 28, 2024 8:33 AM |
Joyce was decidedly more attractive than any of the blond roommates.
But in this pic, she has that weird look on her face. And I prefer her with the raven hair.
by Anonymous | reply 276 | September 28, 2024 2:37 PM |
I never liked John Ritter, and found him annoying and overrated.

r277 Same

Joyce was the one guys would settle for - not anyone’s first choice.

John Ritter looks like he had a lot of makeup on in that photo (R279).
by Anonymous | reply 280 | September 28, 2024 5:23 PM |
Joyce always reminds me of a yappy dog. Her nervous energy is very offputting.

Imagine having the same hairstyle for 60 years.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | September 28, 2024 5:29 PM |
Same hairstyle works for me.

Three'sh Company wash marveloush. I ushed to get high and watch it with Halshton before we went to Shtudio!
by Anonymous | reply 286 | September 28, 2024 7:06 PM |
I absolutely hated John Ritter until Hooperman. He wasn't bad when he acted like an adult and he had a great supporting cast. Hooperman was a great, underrated show.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | September 28, 2024 7:09 PM |
Hooperman was a great show that never got the audience it deserved.
I remember when I first saw Barbara Bosson show up as Hooperman's boss, I thought to myself, those lips have tasted pussy.

R279 remember the episode where Janet bought a blonde wig and it went to her head, because all the guys began noticing her, so she started acting like a bitch to everyone?
by Anonymous | reply 291 | September 28, 2024 7:47 PM |
she did look better.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | September 28, 2024 7:49 PM |
John's hair looks fantastic there--it has much more body and styling than usual! Sorry, blondie, but your ratty wig can't compete.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | September 28, 2024 8:08 PM |
John just spoke with the voice of a gay 14 year old. That's what was annoying about him.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | September 28, 2024 8:26 PM |
Joyce realizes now that she still bears a grudge

by Anonymous | reply 297 | September 28, 2024 9:31 PM |
Joyce was a horrible actress - so very schooled and technique-oriented, but couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, as they say.
by Anonymous | reply 298 | September 28, 2024 10:53 PM |
R298. Fuck you! You obviously never saw my 1995 vehicle "Spring Fling!"! The plot taken from Wikipedia:
Teacher, has taken her class on an excursion in Los Angeles. Problems begin when they get lost and the hotel they were supposed to stay at loses their reservations. After driving around they end up in an empty hotel.
The End, Bitch!
by Anonymous | reply 299 | September 28, 2024 11:52 PM |
she has surprised Pikachu face.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | September 29, 2024 2:59 AM |
R298 I disagree.
I stated above that I watched the series for the firs time this year, and I think she's great.
Everyone in the cast was great.
Much better acting than what we see these days, IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | September 29, 2024 6:04 AM |
Janet's flower shop was a mafia front. She ran hookers and blow out of that place. It's why Chrissy hated her, because Chrissy was too dumb and virginal to work as one of Janet's whores.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | September 29, 2024 6:25 AM |
Does anybody think that Janet's manic energy of later seasons might have been the consequence of some "performance enhancing drugs"?
by Anonymous | reply 303 | September 29, 2024 6:41 AM |
That show really must have been an awfully stupid environment to be trapped in all those years. Maybe Joyce disappeared after it ended because her brain rotted.

Booze and dope!

It was the ‘80s and I am sure she and Ritter were doing coke at least occasionally.

R307. A Joyce DeWitt signed baseball?! Was it from the home run she hit in the Three's Company vs. Eight is Enough matchup?
