Roberta Flack

I’m on a kick lately listening to her music. I don’t think she gets the respect she really deserves. Her stuff is wonderful. I think her version of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? is the definitive one. Beautifully used in an episode of Scandal.

My favorite is still the original, by the Shirelles.

Love her duets with the late, great Donny Hathaway.

She's had ALS for several years and is in assisted living.

by Anonymousreply 4September 15, 2024 10:21 PM

A truly gifted artist who doesn't have the recognition she deserves.

by Anonymousreply 5September 15, 2024 10:38 PM

love her.

Blue Lights in the Basement...

by Anonymousreply 7September 15, 2024 11:49 PM

one of my favorites

by Anonymousreply 8September 15, 2024 11:52 PM

I'm stone cold, but The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Killing Me Softly With His Song punch me in the gut. She'a an amazing talent.

I hate to hear she's in assisted living battling ALS.

Roberta and Karen Carpenter were the greatest pop vocalists of the 70s. Very different sounds, but both so clear and perfect.

by Anonymousreply 10September 15, 2024 11:56 PM

Loved her forever, her two best albums were in the 80s: I’m The One and Oasis. She’s apparently in her sad final days. Who gets her Dakota place?!

That is an amazing song. Her timing, the pauses, the spareness, how her voice gets more powerful then softer, again.

She sold her Dakota apartment a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 13September 16, 2024 12:23 AM

OP I went back and listened as it has been a while. You are right. Her version of this is hauntingly perfect. Adding to my likes list so I won't lose this gem.

by Anonymousreply 17September 16, 2024 1:29 AM

An incredible talent, beautiful songs.

I wish we had artists like her today.

by Anonymousreply 18September 16, 2024 1:29 AM

Beautiful voice and not acknowledged enough in the industry.

by Anonymousreply 19September 16, 2024 1:32 AM

I thought this thread was announcing her death.

by Anonymousreply 20September 16, 2024 1:33 AM

My ex lived in D.C. in the early 70s and said Roberta Flack was a regular entertainer (singer/piano ) at the famous gay bar , the Paramount Steakhouse. He said even back then, everyone knew she was going to be a big star.

by Anonymousreply 21September 16, 2024 1:37 AM

i always forget it was Clint Eastwood who was responsible for her breakout hit

" Her Atlantic recordings did not sell particularly well, until actor/director Clint Eastwood chose a song from First Take, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" written by Ewan MacColl, for the sound track of his directorial debut Play Misty for Me; it became the biggest hit of the year for 1972, spending six consecutive weeks at No. 1 "

She should have had a late career renaissance

her wiki bio early years are very interesting... major talent.

I was fortunate enough to see her live at Madison Square Garden in 1988 at 12 hour long celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Atlantic Records. She shared emcee duties with Phil Collins for the whole event. Every living artist that ever recorded for Atlantic performed that day, even Led Zeppelin. A day I'll never forget.

Not everyone R24. Aretha and Ray Charles were no shows.

Thankfully, Roberta Flack did receive acclaim during her commercial heyday. She had No. 1 hits on the pop and soul charts. She won several Grammys during that time. When it was exceedingly rare for Black artists to win in main categories, she won the Grammy for Record of the Year twice. I am not sure if any Black artist has done that since.

I envy anyone just discovering her music. She is amazing. Aside from all the obvious hits, look out for these:

Sunday and Sister Jones

Loving You (Is Such An Easy Thang To Do)

Ballad of the Sad Young Men

I Can See The Sun In Late December

You'll Never Know Til You Let Go

Mister Magic

It Might Be You

Don't Make Me Wait Too Long

In The Name of Love

And The Feelings Good

Let's Stay Together

I'm The One

Reverend Lee

You Are Everything

Love That Was Lost

You Stopped Loving Me

See You Then

I Told Jesus

Look Out Here It Comes

Love (Always Commands)

She was the 70s Anita Baker. Beautiful voice but boring.

by Anonymousreply 27September 16, 2024 2:26 AM

I loved her joint album with Donny Hathaway.

by Anonymousreply 28September 16, 2024 2:27 AM

The Closer I Get To You is one of the best ballads ever, imho. Gorgeous song.

Only if "boring" means exquisite and heartrending. You should eat more.

You are all making me very nostalgic and sad for the things that are gone.

by Anonymousreply 36September 16, 2024 11:38 AM

Love her voice but I really did always hate “Killing me softly”

by Anonymousreply 37September 16, 2024 11:42 AM

Set The Night To Music w/ Maxi Priest from 1991 is also a great song by her.
