Climate change reaches the point where insurance premiums start to go haywire.

R5 is right for sure. It also seems incredible that the launch of Google only missed out by two years on being an event of this century. The whole world we live in now would have been unimaginable in 1997, before those two events.

The introduction of drones in warfare.

Let's all hope that the invasion of Ukraine doesn't end up making the list for the same reason the shooting of Franz-Ferdinand did last century.

The invention of the Blockchain could turn out to be seismic if anyone ever works out how to utilize it for anything but cryptocurrency and crime. In theory it could put 90% of the world's accountants and financial auditors out of work. This may, of course, be why nobody has utilized it properly yet. That's a lot of White Guys who Know Where the Bodies are Buried we're talking about there.

by Anonymousreply 19September 15, 2024 2:51 PM

The event with more impact in this century so far was the financial crisis of 2007/2008. It caused Trump, the rise of the far right, etc.

And, of course, Facebook.

The problem with placing so much importance on the iPhone is that it is an incremental advance and if Apple didn’t make it someone else would have. We already had cellphones and Blackberries, digital cameras and the portable computers connected to the internet. Putting them together in an attractive package was a great product, but the underlying technologies already existed and they were what is important.

No. Individual, self-directed motorized transportation was new and revolutionary. Carrying fewer gadgets was convenient.

Streisand's scoring #1 albums in the 2000s and 2010s - making her THE ONLY ARTIST TO HAVE A #1 ALBUM in every decade since the 1960s. A number one album for six decades in a row, over two centuries. No one will ever match that achievement. No one.
