Actors you wish had been more prolific
Watching lots of old movies lately and I can’t help but wonder what might have been with some of the actors I’ve watched whose careers seemed somewhat short lived.
Samantha Eggar was a beautiful, stylish British actress who peaked in the 60s. Her career seemed to trail off in the 70s. She had the kind of cut glass English accent and looks that could rival Joan Collins on Dynasty. She also guest starred on a lot of Aaron Spelling shows in the 70s and 80s that I wonder if she wasn’t a consideration for Alexis too.
James Fox is another actor whose career somewhat lagged in the 70s when he decided to become an evangelical Christian. I sometimes watch Michael York in the 70s and wonder if he didn’t run of with Fox’s career.

Elizabeth Hartman who died tragically so young. I wonder what kind of career she would have had. So talented. Ah well.

Coincidentally I think I read that both Hartman and Eggar were up for the role of Katharine Hepburn’s daughter in GWCTD. Both lost out to Katharine Houghton.
I wonder how each of their careers might have developed with a hit like that on their resumes circa 67.

This has often been an issue with British actors who made a splash in a UK hit film or TV series, went on to quickly do a lot of highly commercial work in the US and then gradually just stopped working much or went on to lower profile projects.
Jeremy Northam, Clive Owen, Jennifer Ehle, Dominic Cooper, Kevin McKidd, James Purefoy and most (if not all) of the younger cast of Downton Abbey.
If Emily Blunt hadn't married whatshisname from The Office, she'd be on the list, too.

Isabelle Adjani immediately comes to mind — there’s a gorgeous woman who can really act, not only in French but German and English. She started taking years off between films in her thirties and stopped having an American agent after her son with DDL was born. Would have loved to have seen her as Alex in Fatal Attraction, which she turned down, or some of the roles Isabelle Huppert and Juliette Binoche played after she went into semi-retirement. She’s been much more active in recent years, which is nice.
Also: Alison Eliott, Julie Kavner, Carrie Snodgress, Laurie Metcalf (in film), Kim Stanley, and Anne Bancroft (who turned down The Exorcist, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Requiem for a Dream).

I don't see where the OP means that they cut back on their workload so I'm guessing those that gave up due to typecasting or not doing the casting couch are on the table (so to speak).
The cast of Gilligan's Island for sure as their individual /group chemistry was off the charts.
The cast of Married with Children.
The cast of Three's Company all deserved sequels to their success on that one (besides Ritter & Somers).

You seem to limit Clift tp a narrow range even though he successfully played a wider range of characters: cynical (The Search, The Big Lift), sexy (Red River, The Heiress, From Here to Eternity, Indiscretion of an American Wife) or lowbrow (From Here to Eternity, The Misfits). Judging solely by his former roles, nobody would have cast him as Rudolph Petersen in Judgment at Nuremberg.

Lindsay Lohan is such a disappointment. Emma Stone basically stole her career with half the charisma and far less attractiveness. Jennifer Lawrence also took roles that could have gone to Lindsay. They both have Oscars, while Lindsay is desperately trying to revive her career with a Disney movie that's a sequel to a remake that she made over 20 years ago. Glenn Close has a better chance of winning an Oscar before she dies. Lindsay, on the other hand, will never hear her name being called for the gold, nor will the industry ever take her seriously again. You can only blame her fucked up childhood when she was actually a child. I think she's self-destructive. For reason, she didn't really want it, but it was all laid out for her taking. These days she's trying to convince the public that she's totally changed because she's a mom now and supposedly sober, but she has the mannerisms of an old used up whore still trying to turn tricks. You can tell she's seen and done it all at this point. She's one of the saddest falls from grace.

Lindsay Lohan was fine as a child/adolescent actor, but she was nothing spectacular and she definitely had/has some phony child actor mannered habits that limit her level of authenticity. She like most child stars was quite charismatic and likable and she was certainly not over the top and off putting, but I don't think she has ever been so talented that you can assume that she would have done well with the parts that Lawrence and Stone (both limited themselves but more discipline and authentic performers) succeeded with.

Speaking of Isabelle Adjani: her 'La Reine Margot' co-star, Vincent Perez. Smoulderingly sexy - his big American debut, the sequel to The Crow, flopped, and his career is a leading man in big French movies petered out in the 2000s.

Many of these actors died young from medical issues: Helen Walker, John Cazale, Carol Haney. Others died of AIDS.
Quite a few died from overdoses, many intentionally. (Clift’s behavior became a liability.)
Others got fed up with the business, and walked out: Dolores Hart, Bridget Fonda, William Atherton.
But, others were more or less ostracized for their self-centered behavior. Reportedly, Ms. Eggar’s attitude alienated many.
Then there’s Jon Eric Hexum, who self-destucted, due to sheer stupidity.

[quote]Even though Eduardo Noriega is prolific in Europe, I wish he was as popular in the United States as Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. I try to watch everything he's in but some of his movies I can't get access to.
R160, yes, I understand your point. Noriega is in 45 or so films (and barely a handful of TV projects), but the productions are mostly from Spain, a few from France and Italy, and the one spectacular title from Argentina... It's easy to see him in cinemas and via streaming in Spain, but finding many of those European titles in the U.S. would be tricky. He's reliably excellent (and not hard to look at either.)

Marilyn Monroe's career would never have survived the 1960s. Not because of her talent, which was huge, but because of her fears and insecurities, all the more so as she aged.
I agree about Vivien Leigh though. A truly phenomenal film actress and we only saw a fraction of what she was capable.

Not nearly as much as Kudrow gets from Friends.
Gilpin's net worth is estimated at a relatively low $25mm. Grammer only gets an estimated $13mm per year from Frasier. While the friends are each getting 2% on the estimate $1b Warner makes from syndication of Friends.
David Hyde Pierce is estimated to have made $40mm since the end in 2004 - so maybe $2mm per year. She's probably making half that or $1mm per year at most which makes sense given her estimated net worth and her salary at the end.

To manipulate the question a bit, here are three I wish had had more good roles, each an arrestingly string presence in a good role:
James McAvoy - a commanding presence in his early work
Tobey McGuire - a bit of a laughing stock for some time now, but he was fantastic and in some superb films in his 1996-2000 period.
Timothy Olyphant - had a few sterling riles in which he excelled and some mediocre ones

R199 a few people have suggested Eggar had some sort of rep. I hadn’t heard that before, simply that Wyler was unhappy with her casting in The Collector and wanted to replace her.
I really don’t know much about her. One thing I did read was that allegedly Elizabeth Taylor was jealous of her when she was set to co-star with Richard Burton in some film.

Robert Donat. I'm an unabashed fan. For me he is one of the great actors of the last century with a gorgeous voice and unique presence, so beautifully understated compared to his flashier (some would say hammier) contemporary Olivier. Donat could have had a much bigger career as a film star if he had wanted it, but he did not like Hollywood, and his asthma and psychological difficulties hindered his ability to work at all.
Donat is the perfect Hitchcockian hero in The 39 Steps, displaying an effortless lightness as well as sexiness that Hitchcock's later leading men often lacked. He has fantastic chemistry with Marlene Dietrich in Knight Without Armour and is superb as the impeccably elegant barrister Sir Robert Morton in Anthony Asquith's adaptation of The Winslow Boy. Donat's career was cut short by poor health and he died at the age of 53, having made only 19 films. Not all of them are readily available but I know Criterion has The 39 Steps. Knight Without Armour turns up on TCM occasionally, along with The Count of Monte Cristo, The Citadel, Perfect Strangers (in which Donat and Deborah Kerr play a married couple separated during the war), and Goodbye, Mr. Chips for which Donat won the Academy Award. Donat also appeared in a rather odd wartime film called The Adventures of Tartu in which he is unfortunately saddled with a silly disguise for most of it. He plays a sort of proto-James Bond and is very gripping in the film's first act as he attempts to defuse a bomb that has landed in a hospital. (You can see this one on YouTube I think.)
